tally so far - 4 of my votes have shown up, including 2 i didn't really expect to, and i'm 99% sure i still have another ten (ten!) to come

Can't really say why but I prefer Kerosene to Crazy Ex-Girlfried. I think it's all the beautiful slow paced songs Kerosene's got. Both are great anda step above Revolution, which I still enjoyed quite a lot.

Nothing on it as good as those imo, lots of haunty and jaunty instrumental bits spliced together collage style, not enough choooons.

Great list so far. Glad to see a few off my list so far, including my hometown homiez in NOMO!! Whoever asked about what record of theirs would be a good starting point, I would recommend New Tones, followed immediately by Ghost Rock. Their first record is basically an album-length tribute to Fela Kuti, which is all fine and good, but they moved well beyond that pretty quickly & really started coming into their own on the second record imo.

the Baroness record was also on my list. That sleeve illustration.. you see what I get for downloading everything these days. I miss out on things like the best goddam cover art of ALL TIME!

Broadcast & FG album is more 'experimental' than previous Broadcast LPs and a bit of a mess but often a good mess. Can't say I've listened to it much tho.

i don't get the baroness sleeve art. i've seen better Wizard mag covers

loooool at calling broadcast chillwave

psychgawsple, Friday, 12 February 2010 00:26 (fourteen years ago) link

The Wire made that Broadcast album their No 1 of 2009; but then, it pretty much mines that whole hynagogic thing they've been going on about all year. I like it enough to have listened to it 3 or 4 times; the first half is pretty good, but really tails of and annoyingly so with lack of solid songs to sustain the second half. I hear there is a new, proper Broadcast album due out soon in 2010.

Only thing I voted for so far is The Grandfather Paradox, which I dig lots.

At some point last year, I'd heard these, and went "shrug/meh":
Matias Aguayo - Ay Ay Ay
Girls - Album
Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career
Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
JJ
El Perro Del Mar

But I'm gonna check out these:

Mariah, Meanderthals and NOMO.

Who's this Miranda Lambert?

it's in the subtle differences b/w various blue hues - xxp

probably the best vocals of anyone singing country imo.

iwitches cult is chillwave because it has electronics and reverb in it.

same yo lets get stoned and watch old kids shows vibe

plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:37 (fourteen years ago) link

never got that vibe from broadcast, tbh!

plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:45 (fourteen years ago) link

oops pillbox; hmmmmmm i guess i'd have to see it in person. it just looks like there's way too many lines with the same thickness, making it look kinda messy. i barely know wtf i'm talking about here

guammls (QE II), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:50 (fourteen years ago) link

i hate to be the one to use this phrase but wasn't the wire calling stuff like the broadcast/focus group album 'hauntological' or some shit before they invented 'hypnagogic pop'? that term also predates chillwave, and is a lot more accurate (if super cringeworthy). basically everything on ghost box has a similar vibe iirc

psychgawsple, Friday, 12 February 2010 00:52 (fourteen years ago) link

aka they are reaalllly into the bbc radiophonic workshop stuff

psychgawsple, Friday, 12 February 2010 00:53 (fourteen years ago) link

aka old kids shows, but i agree w/you

guammls (QE II), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:54 (fourteen years ago) link

guammls (QE II), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:56 (fourteen years ago) link

i believe i said proto-chillwave for british ppl

plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:56 (fourteen years ago) link

I didn't vote for the Miranda Lambert album, but I'm kind of glad to see it show up anyway, given some of the other things that are appearing on the list. (Also given that it's good.) When I submitted my list, I narrowed it down to things I really really liked, not just the pretty good stuff, so I cut Revolution out at that point (along with two of my own nominations that I hadn't been sure about). That means probably only one of my picks is going to show up. Of this list, I'd be most interested in hearing that Broadcast thing, based on the snippets I'd checked out before, but I don't expect I'd love it.

Seeing this Grandfather Paradox mix presented as "new music" is bemusing. Funny, some of it looks pretty familiar. (Of course, I haven't actually heard it so I don't know how much they alter the originals.)

no beach vibes so it can't be chillwave right? unless they're riding waves on the isle of wight or w'ever

The Focus Group bring the hauntology, Broadcast brought their strand of UK psych-glo-fi

Britain doesn't have beach vibes. Walking along a windwept cliff vibes maybe. So British Chillwave seems right to me.

El Perro Del Mar was my #1. The slowest, saddest, most sublime disco music. As close to perfect as anything on this list is gonna get.

DavidM, Friday, 12 February 2010 01:23 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost: really? I gave it a cursory listen last night, but didnt get any disco vibe. What track would you recommend?

i dunno, it's obviously not a masterpiece of design or w/e, but it conveys a really strong likeability that's kind of what the whole album's about. it's a big notch under 'how to be a lady' and 'love vs money' but it's consistently listenable the whole way through, and i like "ribbon" more than anything on the other two albums. i can totally get someone not being blown away by it, but it takes a special kind of heartless bastard to actively dislike this stuff.

Meanderthals album is pretty good!! Just discovered after seeing it place above. I had no idea The Idjut Boys were involved in this.
