my favourites are "ribbon" and "the impossible", but i think "betcha gon know" and "up out my face" are more likely to find favour with mariah novices

"the impossible" is basically on a par with "you don't know what love is" and dâm-funk's album for space-age pimp vox ~vibesing out~~~~

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 11 February 2010 23:44 (sixteen years ago)

ha i wouldn't recommend "betcha gon know" to anyone other than a terius stan - al's "the-dream karaoke" is otm about that song

still love it obv

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 11 February 2010 23:55 (sixteen years ago)

did 'Obsessed' drop too early to place in any of the '09 singles polls, bcz its absence was pretty glaring....

ha! (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 11 February 2010 23:55 (sixteen years ago)

The loved the Mariah album. Subtle, but not boring at all, imo

Witch Cults never quite clicked with me, seemed to be too many twiddly bits and not enough songs. Bits of it are great though.

miranda lambert album is good, but not GREAT like crazy ex-girlfriend (maybe i didn't give it enough of a chance?)

nothin i even thought srsly of voting so far, maybe aguayo or meanderthals but like only if we were doing top 40

plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

Wait, I just spent all afternoon catching up with the movie poll & know your going to go & do this to me too..

Bangkok Serious starring Yahoo Dangerous (Pillbox), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

tally so far - 4 of my votes have shown up, including 2 i didn't really expect to, and i'm 99% sure i still have another ten (ten!) to come

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

Can't really say why but I prefer Kerosene to Crazy Ex-Girlfried. I think it's all the beautiful slow paced songs Kerosene's got. Both are great anda step above Revolution, which I still enjoyed quite a lot.

abcfsk, Friday, 12 February 2010 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

what's it like vis à vis their older stuff (specifically "come on let's go" and haha sound), people who've heard it?

Nothing on it as good as those imo, lots of haunty and jaunty instrumental bits spliced together collage style, not enough choooons.

Great list so far. Glad to see a few off my list so far, including my hometown homiez in NOMO!! Whoever asked about what record of theirs would be a good starting point, I would recommend New Tones, followed immediately by Ghost Rock. Their first record is basically an album-length tribute to Fela Kuti, which is all fine and good, but they moved well beyond that pretty quickly & really started coming into their own on the second record imo.

the Baroness record was also on my list. That sleeve illustration.. you see what I get for downloading everything these days. I miss out on things like the best goddam cover art of ALL TIME!

Bangkok Serious starring Yahoo Dangerous (Pillbox), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:17 (sixteen years ago)

Broadcast & FG album is more 'experimental' than previous Broadcast LPs and a bit of a mess but often a good mess. Can't say I've listened to it much tho.

mdskltr (blueski), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:23 (sixteen years ago)

i don't get the baroness sleeve art. i've seen better Wizard mag covers

guammls (QE II), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:25 (sixteen years ago)

loooool at calling broadcast chillwave

psychgawsple, Friday, 12 February 2010 00:26 (sixteen years ago)

The Wire made that Broadcast album their No 1 of 2009; but then, it pretty much mines that whole hynagogic thing they've been going on about all year. I like it enough to have listened to it 3 or 4 times; the first half is pretty good, but really tails of and annoyingly so with lack of solid songs to sustain the second half. I hear there is a new, proper Broadcast album due out soon in 2010.

Only thing I voted for so far is The Grandfather Paradox, which I dig lots.

At some point last year, I'd heard these, and went "shrug/meh":
Matias Aguayo - Ay Ay Ay
Girls - Album
Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career
Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
JJ
El Perro Del Mar

But I'm gonna check out these:

Mariah, Meanderthals and NOMO.

Who's this Miranda Lambert?

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:28 (sixteen years ago)

it's in the subtle differences b/w various blue hues - xxp

Bangkok Serious starring Yahoo Dangerous (Pillbox), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:28 (sixteen years ago)

xp occasionally fiesty country singer

GRIZZLY! GRRR! GRRR! So Indie Entertaaaaiiiinmeeent! (The Reverend), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

probably the best vocals of anyone singing country imo.

Moreno, Friday, 12 February 2010 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

iwitches cult is chillwave because it has electronics and reverb in it.

guammls (QE II), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:35 (sixteen years ago)

same yo lets get stoned and watch old kids shows vibe

plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:37 (sixteen years ago)

never got that vibe from broadcast, tbh!

guammls (QE II), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:38 (sixteen years ago)

yah not so much solo but this alb is totes glofi

plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:39 (sixteen years ago)

isn't glofi what chillwave is rebelling against? totes confused

guammls (QE II), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:39 (sixteen years ago)

n/m, slightly diff shades of blue as mentioned above

guammls (QE II), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:42 (sixteen years ago)

I was referring to the Baroness album cover.

Bangkok Serious starring Yahoo Dangerous (Pillbox), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:44 (sixteen years ago)

yah i wdnt worry they're dumb names made to piss off ppl who hate other ppl who live in ny so

plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:45 (sixteen years ago)

oops pillbox; hmmmmmm i guess i'd have to see it in person. it just looks like there's way too many lines with the same thickness, making it look kinda messy. i barely know wtf i'm talking about here

guammls (QE II), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:50 (sixteen years ago)

i hate to be the one to use this phrase but wasn't the wire calling stuff like the broadcast/focus group album 'hauntological' or some shit before they invented 'hypnagogic pop'? that term also predates chillwave, and is a lot more accurate (if super cringeworthy). basically everything on ghost box has a similar vibe iirc

psychgawsple, Friday, 12 February 2010 00:52 (sixteen years ago)

aka they are reaalllly into the bbc radiophonic workshop stuff

psychgawsple, Friday, 12 February 2010 00:53 (sixteen years ago)

aka old kids shows, but i agree w/you

guammls (QE II), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:54 (sixteen years ago)

wtf same diff iirc

plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:55 (sixteen years ago)
