wow i really didn't expect mariah to place - very happy it did - i don't think either emancipation or e=mc2 did, and they were both much more commercial, immediate, pop-friendly affairs, whereas this one may as well be subtitled "strictly for mariah fans". maybe the-dream's involvement pulled some on board? i think it's a really great, satisfying album; mariah's ability to deliver real talk seems to be oddly correlated to her willingness to deliver self-parody; almost as if the more of a cartoon of herself she is, the more intimate and honest she sounds. also, she's fucking funny throughout, and the-dream coming over all restrained and velvet-pillows-of-layered-vocals on us is very effective. "shower of feathers" about covers it.

jj - was disappointed by, there's wispy, drifting balearica that compels you to return to it (meanderthals) and then there's wispy balearica that drifts through you completely. b'ring.

gave neko case a good try as i really love her voice, if not always her songs, but nothing stuck with me; it's not a patch on blacklisted imo. still, great voice.

Hopefully some good stuff to come. Last year I discovered a few really good albums I hadnt heard because of the poll and quite a few things I liked charted too. But Baroness & Neko Case are the only ones so far.

Mind you, some peoples worst poll results are someones best poll ever.

People just voting for anything Terius related, and this one's grasping at straws.

bullshit, some of us were voting for mariah albums way before she met terius - and yes she is and always has been awesome, LOSERS

that neko placing is just about right - it's a nice album but really drags toward the end. def support her though

pleased that mariah placed and look forward to more people who don't listen to r&b commenting negatively on it

yeah you know mariah would probably take that as a pretty high compliment

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 11 February 2010 23:40 (fourteen years ago) link

love the album but don't really share the love for that line

my favorite by far is "ribbon", then "obsessed" and "more than just friends"

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Thursday, 11 February 2010 23:42 (fourteen years ago) link

That one line is some next level humpty dumpty shit imo

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Thursday, 11 February 2010 23:42 (fourteen years ago) link

I think that's kind of the point.

GRIZZLY! GRRR! GRRR! So Indie Entertaaaaiiiinmeeent! (The Reverend), Thursday, 11 February 2010 23:43 (fourteen years ago) link

my favourites are "ribbon" and "the impossible", but i think "betcha gon know" and "up out my face" are more likely to find favour with mariah novices

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 11 February 2010 23:44 (fourteen years ago) link

"the impossible" is basically on a par with "you don't know what love is" and dâm-funk's album for space-age pimp vox ~vibesing out~~~~

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 11 February 2010 23:44 (fourteen years ago) link

ha i wouldn't recommend "betcha gon know" to anyone other than a terius stan - al's "the-dream karaoke" is otm about that song

still love it obv

Can't really say why but I prefer Kerosene to Crazy Ex-Girlfried. I think it's all the beautiful slow paced songs Kerosene's got. Both are great anda step above Revolution, which I still enjoyed quite a lot.

Nothing on it as good as those imo, lots of haunty and jaunty instrumental bits spliced together collage style, not enough choooons.

Great list so far. Glad to see a few off my list so far, including my hometown homiez in NOMO!! Whoever asked about what record of theirs would be a good starting point, I would recommend New Tones, followed immediately by Ghost Rock. Their first record is basically an album-length tribute to Fela Kuti, which is all fine and good, but they moved well beyond that pretty quickly & really started coming into their own on the second record imo.

the Baroness record was also on my list. That sleeve illustration.. you see what I get for downloading everything these days. I miss out on things like the best goddam cover art of ALL TIME!

Broadcast & FG album is more 'experimental' than previous Broadcast LPs and a bit of a mess but often a good mess. Can't say I've listened to it much tho.
