really like the sound and production on the horrors album. not as crazy about the songs. pleasant to have on in the background, tho.

Kind of shoegazey isn't it. Not bad what I've heard so far on first listen.

seeing raekwon in those lists will never not be hilarious

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Thursday, 11 February 2010 19:56 (sixteen years ago)

I loved the Horrors album when it came out - I repped and repped for it in the face of people calling me a corny Hoxton indie fuxxor, but really it was Sea Within A Sea which was the diamond in the rough. The rest of the album was really just a shoegaze/Joy Division retread with (admittedly excellent) production from Geoff Barrow.

Or maybe that's a bit harsh. I think I was just elated that a British rock band could do something like this in 2009 without trying to go all electro or whatever. Sea Within A Sea remains a great track though - I'm surprised it didn't chart on the singles list.

36 -- Neko Case - Middle Cyclone (107 points, 12 votes, 2 #1 vote/s) (21 in p4k, 3 in p&j)

musically, Thursday, 11 February 2010 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

that's a better placement than its silly top 5 finish in a lot of places. i like neko ok, nice voice, good singer, but she's never really mastered the whole melody thing afaic. i tend to enjoy her records all right while i'm listening, but i'm hard pressed to remember a tune afterward.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 11 February 2010 20:17 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that's well-put. i think she could stand to write shorter stuff that's a little more focused.

My #1.

Mordy, Thursday, 11 February 2010 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

My favourite album sleeve of last year.

The Man With the Magic Eardrums (Billy Dods), Thursday, 11 February 2010 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

I think the album sleeve is horrible, am I alone?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 11 February 2010 20:54 (sixteen years ago)

i like it, never saw it before until just now

da Condom FATHER (some dude), Thursday, 11 February 2010 20:56 (sixteen years ago)

could do with some need for speed graf font imo

zvookster, Thursday, 11 February 2010 20:58 (sixteen years ago)

the white space around the car bores me, would rather they'd kept the background. the text is a mess as with 98% of current sleeves.

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 11 February 2010 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

yea that sleeve is nothing special imo. maybe if you're into cars?

psychgawsple, Thursday, 11 February 2010 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

someone should do an album covers of the year poll

I love this Mountain Goats album - it was the one that converted me from an admirer to a fan. The production on this is top notch, and J0hn's control of his voice has only improved with time. The most played album in my house the last few months.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 11 February 2010 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

it was a bit outside my top 20 but def a good album and worthy choice

call all destroyer, Thursday, 11 February 2010 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

Great, great record.

makes me think all pop albums should be 8 songs long; it's such a perfect stream of bangers

Likewise.

birdman mumia (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 11 February 2010 22:14 (sixteen years ago)

nothin i voted for yet

plaxico (I know, right?), Thursday, 11 February 2010 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

I think The Mountain Goats might be the only thing on my ballot that will show up.
