'Washy and dull' is a better fit for Yellow House than it is for Veckatimest imo, cos that was my initial response to it. But then I noticed how the songs were all pulled taut in strange places like beds made wrong, and then it started having this weird fascination for me. Veckatimest was a lot more instant for me.

The low positioning of both Grizzly Bear and Girls gives me some hope that Merriweather Post Pavilion won't actually be number one here.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:13 (fourteen years ago) link

Hey remember last year when the Fleet Foxes came up and everyone was all 'oi, Grizzly Bear are so much better'?

Not sure how much of an intersect there is between Girls fans and Animal Collectors.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Animal Collective wont be no1

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I deliberately left MPP off my ballot. CONTROVERSY.

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:20 (fourteen years ago) link

1,2,3 of The XX, AnCo and Phoenix, though I hope I'm wrong.

The Man With the Magic Eardrums (Billy Dods), Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:26 (fourteen years ago) link

1,2,3 of The Cold War, though I hope I'm right.

80085 (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Fever Ray will be higher than Phoenix says I.

I deliberately left GPDY off my ballot, even though I think they're all basically okay to some extent.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:29 (fourteen years ago) link

(to be clear, those would have been vying for 20th place or something)

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Fever Ray will definitely be higher than Phoenix, maybe higher than the XX as well.

I can see the Electrik Red album going top three, possibly the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as well.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Is that Electrik Red album really that popular? I know it's got its boosters (Hi Lex) but I thought it was a little under the radar to poll so highly. Fevr Ray, yup, must admit that slipped my mind.

The Man With the Magic Eardrums (Billy Dods), Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:36 (fourteen years ago) link

It only takes five or so people to vote something really highly for it to hit really high in one of these - the Electrik Red thread is pretty long and the people who like that album really love it. That said there might be some vote splitting as a result of the Dream album.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Can see The-Dream being top 3, ER around 15th or so.

80085 (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:39 (fourteen years ago) link

It's between fever ray, the xx and phoenix for top spot. Wont be surprised if its in that order. Possibly Phoenix will suffer from gapdy backlash. Maybe Taylor Swift, elektrik red or The-Dream will complete the top 5 if phoenix places lower.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:00 (fourteen years ago) link

This.

3) The xx
4) Animal Collective
5) Phoenix

Yeah Yeah Yeahs will be higher than Phoenix.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Taylor Swift and YYYs will be lower half of top ten, Electrik Red top twenty.

Grandfather Paradox is great, one of my fave mixes of the last decade. It compares well with Optimo's Walkabout from a few years back.

Neil S, Thursday, 11 February 2010 16:13 (fourteen years ago) link

grandfather paradox is the only pick of mine to show up so far. i really like the idea of it, but even more than that how well it works -- and how idiosyncratic it is too, there's some obvious things in there but there's also stuff like cymande and yusef lateef that works and fits but that sort of expands the idea of the minimalist lineage. unmixed disc is great too.

I've edited the message to put the right album cover there. I really love that El Perro Del Mar album incidentally, gorgeous stuff... the soundtrack to the early summer for me.

about 40% of P&J's Girls voters also voted for AC:

grandfather paradox didn't really do much for me to begin with cos i was trying to listen to it like a dance mix, which it isn't, but over the year it impressed me more and more with the way it builds and sustains a mood and just the seamless seamless flow of it. it became my default hangover music for a while - high praise imo.

haha it really is dope early morning music and "seamless" is a good way to describe it. and while its okay mood music i do think the mix has a clarity and tension that really rewards close listening.

v interested in el perro del mar

Lamp, Thursday, 11 February 2010 16:23 (fourteen years ago) link

hated the production on that camera obscura album--way too much reverb and soft-focus orchestration that makes it sound like no actual instruments are being played.

I really liked the production for much the same reason.

kinda fitting that the ilx equivalent of GAPDY is FAPDY

Intersting. They've obviously got lots in common, but that Girls stuff just seems to pale in comparison to MPP in terms of ambition and imagination.

X-post regarding nicely packaged albums (I just finished skimming through the thread) - I was struck by the packaging for the last Hacride and UFOmammut albums. Not only the cover art, but these special jewel cases with rounded corners that seem extra sturdy.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 11 February 2010 16:51 (fourteen years ago) link

UFOmammut albums also cost 50 euros though, so fuck that.
