spacey jazz funk with dub and afrobeat is not far from it

They're better live but not so much live on tape. Lala is a good call:

Nu Tones is such a good time. Okay, ahmastop gushing now.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Fucking awesome to see NOMO in there, PS. It was one of my nominees, but I don't remember if I actually voted for it or not...

I'd say start with "Patterns" from this one, "Rings" from Ghost Rock, and "Fourth Ward" and "Reasons" from New Tones.

Parenthetical Grillz, Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:19 (fourteen years ago) link

yay NOMO

guammls (QE II), Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I was the #1 for FOB :)

some dude, Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:21 (fourteen years ago) link

my first thought was actually that they must be really enjoyable live

that was pretty good, i kinda had that "they're talented but i don't know what i'm meant to DO to this" feeling but i like the way they don't let the listener rest on their laurels. i don't think "post-pub drunk" is the ideal situation to hear them in tbh.

xps re nomo

so far UGK is my only vote

GRIZZLY! GRRR! GRRR! So Indie Entertaaaaiiiinmeeent! (The Reverend), Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:23 (fourteen years ago) link

i know placement schadenfreude is just the lamest, but I'm awful happy to see NOMO ahead of grizzly bear

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Hmm. Didn't vote for Folie a Deux, because I'd been listening to it for a huge chunk of 2008, but it's probably better than at least 50% of my 2009 albums ballot. Curious where we go from here - more stuff I haven't heard/heard of here than on trax.

Alex in Montreal, Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:27 (fourteen years ago) link

never even heard of Nomo before but they sound awesome!

if you have an issue with a song/album's nomination, it's more helpful to bring it up during the nomination/voting threads so I can remove it or people can discuss it, there's not much to be done now.

musically, Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:31 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i think i knew every song on the trax list besides maybe 3 or 4 - albums will at least have more stuff to check out for me. 2/10 so far

oh ugh i just looked over my ballot and i gave a high placing vote to an album i completely detest because i got it confused with something else o_O

SMALL BONES, SMALL BODIES (jjjusten), Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:37 (fourteen years ago) link

if "Dark Was the Night" places it is my dumb goddamn fault and i will ban myself from ILM

SMALL BONES, SMALL BODIES (jjjusten), Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:38 (fourteen years ago) link

ha it will not place - i would advocate the bannings of anyone who voted for it if it does, however

banning*

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:51 (fourteen years ago) link

i bought that nomo album but never really got into it that much--something seems kinda overproduced or vibe-sucking about it? i still like their concept tho so it's cool to see them up here.

i was a vecky voter but it was pretty low on my ballot--no ish with it placing in the 40s.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:00 (fourteen years ago) link

i will listen to the aguayo and ugk records. i think i liked the one aguayo song i heard.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:01 (fourteen years ago) link

oh and btw just to close the loop on fall out boy/modern rock, i was thinking about it walking back from the indian place where i got takeout and i realized this--from 1996-1999 i basically did nothing but listen to modern rock radio. and it's really hard for me to enjoy stuff from today that would slot into that format, or even basically think about it objectively. like i'm streaming a few of those f.o.b. tracks and they really just sound like nothing to me--i get a really blank feeling.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Why do people keep saying: "look this cover is just like that," and then posting similar covers which really aren't that similar?

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't know what Shabazz Palaces is, but I want that packaging.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:15 (fourteen years ago) link

Ignore the stupid thread title, but they are kind of ramshackle undie rap by one of the dudes from Digable Planets. I like them a lot

Shabazz Palaces - Most important musical group/moment in Seattle since Nirvana at OK Hotel?

GRIZZLY! GRRR! GRRR! So Indie Entertaaaaiiiinmeeent! (The Reverend), Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:17 (fourteen years ago) link

UGK - Da Game Been Good To Me (youtube)

excellent Pimp C hook and coda, aggressive Bun B verse

UGK - Purse Come First (youtube)

some anger, paranoia and political commentary that would fit right in on Goodie Mob's Soul Food. Except with some religious apocrypha thrown in, and a money-over-everything hook apropos of nothing much

zvookster, Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Those aren't anywhere near my favorite tracks on that album.

GRIZZLY! GRRR! GRRR! So Indie Entertaaaaiiiinmeeent! (The Reverend), Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:20 (fourteen years ago) link

had the youtubes to hand. post 'em.

zvookster, Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:22 (fourteen years ago) link

"da game been good to me" is def a highlight for me - would also recommend "used to be"

from puppy to dog, from tadpole to frog, from PIG TO A MOTHERFUCKIN HOG

that shabazz palaces sounds great, what have they released that's worth getting?

united arab amirites (samosa gibreel), Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:25 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah "used to be" is a favorite, but it's a pretty even album. i've actually probably played the two interludes, "texas ave" & "7th street" more than anything else

xp

J0rdan S., Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:54 (fourteen years ago) link

"Used to be" is the shit! Gets me so effin pumped, but seriously just about every song is awesome. UGK was my #6.

Aaaand Girls was my #5, probably ruining the goodwill of those who are with me on the UGK.

although i get the kneejerk anti-corny indie fux hatering

Just to clarify, this may be why *some* folks hate on Grizzly Bear but personally, it's not a "kneejerk" reaction -- I've heard each of their albums as they've come out (gave them a big chance from the start due to the Warp Records association) and I just haven't enjoyed 'em at all -- not kneejerk. It's not an "anti-corny" thing, either -- "corny" is one of the last ways I'd describe GB, if anything they are guilty of being overly serious and boring. And it's not an "indie fux" thing -- I like plenty of stuff that can be classified as "indie," including YYYs and AnCo, two fellow GAPDY bands. Basically I just don't like GB. At all.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:58 (fourteen years ago) link

lol plenty of people on ilm like grizzly bear - i actually liked their other album. most of the more vocal posters just don't really care one way or another about veckatimest

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Thursday, 11 February 2010 02:11 (fourteen years ago) link

thread needs less bitching about grizzly bear, more bitching about girls and more talk of the grandfather paradox in general. regardless of the 'preachy' aspect of the mix (which has been overstated on ilx imo) this is a well-mixed, amazing collection of music. thooo i think i might like the unmixed collection even better- for some reason there are great tracks that appear on one disc and not the other?

psychgawsple, Thursday, 11 February 2010 03:01 (fourteen years ago) link

I like that Shabazz Palaces track, and the video

Dan S, Thursday, 11 February 2010 03:22 (fourteen years ago) link

grizzly bear is OKAY but pretty much just OKAY based on the two albums i heard. not sure i see why i should care more than i do which means you don't get near my top hundred.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 11 February 2010 03:29 (fourteen years ago) link

I haven't checked this site in awhile and I come back and people are still freaking out about how much they hate grizzly bear. Get over it! Major hive mentality round these parts.
On a side note that Matias Aguayo album is great. Really great.

Uh, it was voted into the top 50 albums of the year. Some love it, some hate it, some are pretty neutral. Welcome to the hive.

have barely heard much by any of the GAPDY bands but G is i guess the most meat and potatoes indie rock band of the bunch, right? no crazy noise or dance beats or synths or whatever to redeem them as 'forward-thinking' or 'eclectic' or w/e? i always figured that's why they were the easy target out of the bunch.

some dude, Thursday, 11 February 2010 04:21 (fourteen years ago) link

I agree, most conventional in terms of g/b/d format, but not in the way the songs are structured, which I think is very complex, certainly more than Phoenix or Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Also more sedate and somber, which I think puts some people off.

Dan S, Thursday, 11 February 2010 04:32 (fourteen years ago) link

basically all of grizz bear's reference points are pre-'75 so they seem square
