"sex on fire" is def my least favorite one, but i really don't mind it. if you meet it on its own terms it's no different than, like, mgmt. "use somebody" is way better tho

I see the comparison, since both bands belong in the garbage bin.

Glad to see Grizzly Bear so low, too.

Musically, can you post something good so I can stop coming off like the biggest hater of all music ever made? Thanks! :D

You know, I only just figured out that the Grizzly Bear cover was a blonde guy talking to a stormtrooper in a pink dress.

I think the blonde guy was the delivery guy in the "Money For Nothing" video.

yeah 'youth & young manhood' is dope

glad I'm not the only person who feels that way

I heard "Sex on Fire" a couple of weeks ago over the speakers in the middle of a trade show without realising what it was, and it was kindof awesome. I doubt that would translate well to me having it on my iPod and actually listening to it, but really it could be a whole lot worse.

I had to google him. I had no clue who Mr. Droste was.

But once I did it was funny. Ha!

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 23:44 (fourteen years ago) link

mark me down as another person who didn't really understand why fall out boy was nominated but voted for it just the same. nice to already have two on here (that and ugk).

Man, you are *seriously* punchy today.

"Punchy" as in "sharp"/"witty"? or as in "punchable"?

Wishful thinking, I know.

ahhh i'm really happy ugk placed, i didn't think it would! i never knew quite how to sell that album (to people who hadn't listened to it anyway): it's like, ugk doing what ugk always have done, but really fucking well, and a really appropriate and kinda moving epitaph for pimp c?

unsurprised that the grandfather paradox showed up; i enjoyed listening to it but i did feel it got undue attention because of the whole ~educational~ aspect of it - by no means was it a standout mix in itself for me. it gives me hope that the hyperdub comp will show up though.

lol @ the way ilm really does not give a shit about grizzly bear

that FOB album was pretty good. forgot about it at voting time, tho
Veckatimest was another one these high on my list. Great headphones album. Surely the victim of negative ILM groupthink

I complained at first, but given that Taylor's also nominated I guess it's just appropriate that those late-year albums squeak into next year's proceedings. Hey, why not...

the platinum re-release

Cool, let's throw those 2009 Beatles reissues into the albums poll while we're at it, k?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 23:49 (fourteen years ago) link

haha, i agree actually -- i figured the taylor album was slipping in because of the british technicality

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 10 February 2010 23:52 (fourteen years ago) link

given that most official publications release their year end lists in mid-december, and likely compile them in late november, i don't think it's a huge deal to include albums from december the year before. especially here where no one is payed to do this and some of the voters aren't even professional music critics i think it's fair to allow some slack to catch up.

united arab amirites (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 23:52 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i think that's pretty much otm

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 10 February 2010 23:53 (fourteen years ago) link

it's not really a british technicality when the album was released in far more countries in 09 than 08

Veckatimest was another one these high on my list. Great headphones album. Surely the victim of negative ILM groupthink

didn't vote for the album personally but this is otm. it got so much shit slinged at it from people here and although i get the kneejerk anti-corny indie fux hatering, it really doesn't deserve it; it's a lovely album.

united arab amirites (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 23:56 (fourteen years ago) link

But it's not a late November 2008 to whenever you stopped paying attention in 2009 poll. It's a 2009 poll.

It's obviously not a big deal, it's just a bit deflating to see something so (for lack of a better word) dated skew the results.

That makes it make a little more sense. But it's like Spin picking White Blood Cells as the best album of 2002 because it was reissued on a new label--you can rationalize it, but it's still pretty boring.

xp grillz - if it really bothers you just wait til musically posts the big list and replace #50 with #51 etc. imo there's no point getting too literal/pedantic about it, an album that came out a couple weeks before nominations is just as robbed for not showing up on the 08 list as whatever the #51 album is this year.

united arab amirites (samosa gibreel), Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:05 (fourteen years ago) link

I think people here would like Veckatimest a lot better if it had gotten a #42 album of the year level of hype instead of the blowjob-fest it actually got. #42 album of the year is probably exactly right. (and Animal Collective would be #39)

Parenthetical Grillz, Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Nobody cared when Love/Hate placed in the 2008 poll after being released in December of '07.

It's jammy, weird and wonderful. It's Nomo's new album 'Ghost Rock'

Not to get, you know, too pedantic, but FaD was preceded by two singles and sold 150,000 copies in its first week, so it's not like it wasn't out there to take notice of. It's not some brand new artist we're talking about here, it's one of the biggest rock bands of the last five years.

Streaming Invisible Cities on Lala via Pitchfork. First few track sounds like spacey jazz-funk with echoes of dub, maybe?
