whole album is great but i realized a while back that my 5 favorite tracks are the first 5 tracks. what a run!

Robert Altbro (some dude), Sunday, 7 February 2010 16:38 (sixteen years ago)

i think my favorites are "9 to 5", "devotion", and "go shawty" - but i'm a sucker for "promise" bites

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Sunday, 7 February 2010 17:37 (sixteen years ago)

"9 to 5" might be my favorite song from last year period

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Sunday, 7 February 2010 17:38 (sixteen years ago)

i really like that it took me so long to really get into "9 to 5" because it basically means this album is still continuing to give for me

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 7 February 2010 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

yeah same, "devotion" was my instant favorite but it wasn't until like october that "9 to 5" started really hitting me

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Sunday, 7 February 2010 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

Naomi's performance on "9 To 5" is amazing. "OHHHHHH! Punch the clock! Put it on me baby we ain't got much time..."

Tim F, Sunday, 7 February 2010 22:14 (sixteen years ago)

Tick Tock! Want you to love me like the flowers love the sunlight...

And the beat is so....stately? Especially that repeated piano chord.

The way she wraps around those short sharp syllables at the beginning of each line (punch the clock/tick tock/don't stop/I pop).

Alex in Montreal, Sunday, 7 February 2010 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

"Tick Tock. I need you like hearts and lyrics need a beat."

Alex in Montreal, Sunday, 7 February 2010 22:22 (sixteen years ago)

I said it before, but the song "9 to 5" makes me think of most is Prince's "Gotta Broken Heart Again"

jesus is radric (The Reverend), Sunday, 7 February 2010 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

The way she wraps around those short sharp syllables at the beginning of each line (punch the clock/tick tock/don't stop/I pop).

totally, and how each is immediately followed by a stream of words that just pours out - "it's 5 o'clock / i'm-comin-home-i'm-runnin-home-to-relieve-the-tension---"

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 7 February 2010 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

So there's a WFY Remix featuring Ludacris?

Leslie threw me on the bed
She tied my hands and feet
Put a blindfold over my eyes
And told her CENSORED not to make a peep
I swear she was super-warmy??
Cause she had some legs of steel
And she was looking like a lightning bolt
With Electrik Red stiletto heels
I tried to tell her I'm about to lose it
Then she proceeded to put on some music
All of a sudden came Binkie, Naomi and Sarah
And then I got electrocuted
Now tell me what I'm posed to do
They fucked me black and blue
Cause..."yall don't fuck us...we fuck you"

Alex in Montreal, Monday, 8 February 2010 01:18 (sixteen years ago)

probably superwoman

jesus is radric (The Reverend), Monday, 8 February 2010 03:09 (sixteen years ago)

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 00:18 (sixteen years ago)

naomi tweeted about http://www.electrikred.freeforums.org/index.php just now, & i think they should just fold their forum into ilm pretty much

suge knight btw (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

This album just keeps on giving, currently enjoying a hungover Sunday afternoon of 9 To 5

boxedjoy, Sunday, 14 March 2010 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah...after almost a year's worth of demurrals, I finally came around last Wednesday.

The Magnificent Colin Firth (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 March 2010 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Last time around, Radio Killa Record signees recorded exclusively with The Dream, but it seems for their follow-up, they’ve logged studio time with R. City, Joi Starr, Danja and more. No word on a solid release date.

Always :( at any artist I like working with those hacks R. City.

Also the finished version of "I'm That Chick" sounds great.

juan the intern (The Reverend), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 03:38 (sixteen years ago)

what is a joi starr

hipster puddy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 03:40 (sixteen years ago)

loldreamstan but this is probably bad news for me

51ocki (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 04:00 (sixteen years ago)

it was pretty much inevitable, but ya it will take some wild stroke of fate if this does not result in a significantly shittier album

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 05:43 (sixteen years ago)

well okay, obv it's not going to be better -- that's pretty much impossible -- but based on their few non-terius/tricky tracks, it still has a decent chance of being one of the best r&b albums of the year -- they have a really defined aesthetic that might be drawing out great tracks in producers/writers, or maybe they just have great taste, or maybe they had more input in the first album than we think or or or or (cuz "i'm that chick" is dope)

hipster puddy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 05:49 (sixteen years ago)

still... danja

plax (ico), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 12:08 (sixteen years ago)

more than anything you just fear for the balance between sass and vulnerability within each track that made vol 1 come alive. i'm still confident they can manage each separately to a worthwhile degree, but yeah.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 13:06 (sixteen years ago)

whoa there with this high, high praise in 2010

r|t|c, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 13:07 (sixteen years ago)

they managed it on "electrik city" with, like, darkchild, so...

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 13:10 (sixteen years ago)

the red panties joint? yeah, the emotional spectrum didn't really scream itself out to me there.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 13:24 (sixteen years ago)

This is what I was thinking.

I love "Electrik City", and a whole album of tracks like that and "W.F.Y." would be great but it would also come on like a pretty different group (not that i really expect the next album to be just like this - see below).

What I feel like The-Dream did was to really push Naomi to the fore on the majority of tracks. That sass/vulnerability tightrope that Naomi walks so frequently can't really be done by any of the other singers except to the extent that they are in supporting mode.

They do great tracks without Naomi on lead but I feel that those tracks just form the outer points on a constellation with a cluster of Naomi-led tracks in the centre.

Whereas I could imagine a new album not helmed by The-Dream going a bit more bipolar, focusing on "Electrik City" style tracks while pushing the counterpart Naomi tracks into "Never Ever" zones of sweetness. It's the latter more than the former that I'm worried about. I don't know that many other producers/songwriters are um... is there a less poncy word than "nuanced" here?.. enough to get the right balance on any Naomi-led tunes.

A pre-falling-off Polow coulda done it maybe.

Tim F, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 21:52 (sixteen years ago)

^^^sick wid it

wakaflockapitusberry (The Reverend), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not sure I trust Terius and Tricky to give a new album their full attention and effort, given the massive drop-off in their quality control of late. A few more producers is probably a good thing.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 22:39 (sixteen years ago)

yeah but non-washed up producers woulda been nice too

k3vin k., Thursday, 1 April 2010 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

idk last time i got preemptively worked up over production credits was the gucci album and that turned out great, so we'll see

k3vin k., Thursday, 1 April 2010 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

I've always been pretty willing to believe the narrative that ER brought a lot of their own personality/topics/opinions to their album, and would like to see them work w/ different producers and songwriters to verify that. Although as I said upthread, I'd be surprised if Def Jam ever releases another album by them -- really I'm still amazed and thankful that the first one was released.

j@ggerlovesmanydudes (some dude), Thursday, 1 April 2010 00:22 (sixteen years ago)

Rock City really is the fuckin worst though

j@ggerlovesmanydudes (some dude), Thursday, 1 April 2010 00:22 (sixteen years ago)

dont really think of Electrik red as a band that that is abt production?

plax (ico), Thursday, 1 April 2010 14:09 (sixteen years ago)

um it was a huge part of the appeal of the first album to me

k3vin k., Thursday, 1 April 2010 14:10 (sixteen years ago)

your average industry hack has at least a few tracks that justify their existence, but have r. city ever once did anything that didn't suck scrotum?

wakaflockapitusberry (The Reverend), Thursday, 1 April 2010 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

they were one that one semi-defensible Asher Roth song with Beanie and uh, i think their song on the Rich Boy album was alright? but yeah they are really the bastard stepchildren of the Konvict Muzik stable.

batwing rightshit cartoonist (some dude), Thursday, 1 April 2010 15:59 (sixteen years ago)

according to wiki, nicole scherzinger's "supervillain" and janet jackson's "rollercoaster"

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:11 (sixteen years ago)

"supervillain" is a masterpiece so there's hope

blobas, Sunday, 4 April 2010 22:31 (sixteen years ago)

I've always been pretty willing to believe the narrative that ER brought a lot of their own personality/topics/opinions to their album,

eh what's the big deal? No snark intended, but these gals are only as good as their material.

filling the medicare donut hole with the semen of liberal (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 4 April 2010 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

but again, how can you make that call based one album done w/ all the same production team.

fuckshitpop (some dude), Sunday, 4 April 2010 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

i don't agree that they're only as good as their material, but good production and writing > wack production and writing

k3vin k., Sunday, 4 April 2010 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

those statements both essentially mean nothing, though

fuckshitpop (some dude), Sunday, 4 April 2010 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

huh? i'm just saying that i think the girls are super talented but i'd rather not take a chance with lame producers (as spotty as tricky/dream have been lately)

k3vin k., Sunday, 4 April 2010 22:54 (sixteen years ago)

"good production is better than bad production" isn't the same thing as "known quantity is better than unknown quantity"

fuckshitpop (some dude), Sunday, 4 April 2010 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

dream & tricky are having a great year

jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 4 April 2010 23:40 (sixteen years ago)

well, idk what tricky has done actually -- terius is having a great year tho

jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 4 April 2010 23:40 (sixteen years ago)
