yeah thanks - been looking for that too.

dog latin, Sunday, 7 February 2010 03:31 (fourteen years ago) link

fyi the songs all have youtubes in this thread and you can use www.dirpy.com to convert it to mp3 easily, that's what i do when i'm browsing youtube

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Sunday, 7 February 2010 03:32 (fourteen years ago) link

woah. Will totally check that out, thanks.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 7 February 2010 04:04 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah it's actually surprisingly efficient and hassle free

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Sunday, 7 February 2010 04:22 (fourteen years ago) link

i find the quality is always wack whenever i do that

samosa gibreel, Sunday, 7 February 2010 07:34 (fourteen years ago) link

as a bookmark i mean

een, Sunday, 7 February 2010 08:43 (fourteen years ago) link

usershare is the most common these days i find - beemp3.com can be useful too

though really it's so rare that googling eg "trap goin ham" mp3 doesn't bring up a ton of varied d/l links - it's the older stuff that i usually have a problem finding (esp if it wasn't released in the uk and isn't on itunes, or in some particularly retarded cases, only the clean version is available WHAT IS THE POINT OF THAT)

Dudes I'm kinda sad I wasn't around to participate in this list but YAY FUCKING AWESOME LIST ANYWAY, definitely the best 09 list I've seen. Even if Baby Can't Stop is the only song I really like in the top 10 the rest of it more than makes up for it.

Also my #1, Inflation, placed, which makes me very happy indeed.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Sunday, 7 February 2010 10:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Also I spent Friday night in a club in Kampala and the music was all dancehall and hip-hop and various African takes on both, and then the DJ played I Gotta Feeling and suddenly there were only white people dancing.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Sunday, 7 February 2010 11:00 (fourteen years ago) link

:(

mdskltr (blueski), Sunday, 7 February 2010 11:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Matt I'm pleased you also picked "Inflation" as your number 1!

Tim F, Sunday, 7 February 2010 11:24 (fourteen years ago) link

if i'd ranked them, either "inflation" or "fancy" or "we nuh run" would have been my no 1.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 7 February 2010 11:26 (fourteen years ago) link

In years to come people will look back and feel foolish for not having recognised its world-beating classicness earlier.

Tim F, Sunday, 7 February 2010 11:28 (fourteen years ago) link

nah

mdskltr (blueski), Sunday, 7 February 2010 11:31 (fourteen years ago) link

what don't you like about it again steve?

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 7 February 2010 11:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Tim I was actually torn between Hey Playa and Inflation for #1 but I knew you'd be putting the latter in the top spot and I thought that might give it the push it needed to make the list. Given only Bongo Jam made it last year I thought here might be some major UK funky vote-splitting. Wonder who else voted it #1?

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Sunday, 7 February 2010 11:50 (fourteen years ago) link

Steve makes it his business to not like the funky he's supposed to like.

Tim F, Sunday, 7 February 2010 11:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Think the reason Inflation is so great is that it's got a tempo and momentum that's just total peak time, especially the rising xylophones that correspond with the "wind up and wind up and wind up" in the Aidonia version. I could totally imagine it working in straight up commercial house sets and even in trance sets if need be. It's got a sort of homespun euphoric e-transcendence feel that you don't get much of in funky.

to not like the funky he's supposed to like

to not like the funky everyone else likes is more accurate i guess :) but i don't hate it, just don't see the big fuss (i don't really like xylo/marimba as a lead instrument and it may just come down to that).

mdskltr (blueski), Sunday, 7 February 2010 12:06 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't really like xylo/marimba as a lead instrument

!!!! You are dead to me now.

Tim F, Sunday, 7 February 2010 12:13 (fourteen years ago) link

i long for saxophone to replace it

were there any big Inflation imitators last year? as in instrumentals with extended solos going for epic vibes?

mdskltr (blueski), Sunday, 7 February 2010 12:15 (fourteen years ago) link

if sax solos had been big this year i BET you'd have complained about them as well

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 7 February 2010 12:16 (fourteen years ago) link

it's tough being a critic

mdskltr (blueski), Sunday, 7 February 2010 12:17 (fourteen years ago) link

xxp Kentphonik, "Sunday Showers"

it's ok, not nearly as energetic as "Inflation"

The Reverend, Sunday, 7 February 2010 12:19 (fourteen years ago) link

That predates "Inflation" though, yeah?

Funkystepz's "Sounds In Moruga" is a "Sunday Showers" imitator, which is a shame 'cos those guys would probably do an excellent "Inflation" imitation.

Tim F, Sunday, 7 February 2010 12:23 (fourteen years ago) link

oh, I only heard it afterwards, but I guess it prob is it's on the mix disc from Volumes: One, which iirc came out around the same time as the "Funky Anthem" single

The Reverend, Sunday, 7 February 2010 12:30 (fourteen years ago) link

"sunday showers" originally came out in 2007 - it's an old house cut that found a new lease of life w/the emergence of funky (same with blackcoffee's "you turn me on") (and i guess similar to how "who's afraid of detroit" kept, and still keeps, popping up on funky comps and in funky sets)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 7 February 2010 12:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Some of funky's canonical old house is so random, like, ultra nate's "love's the only drug" - great track, but why that and not other diva house??

Tim F, Sunday, 7 February 2010 12:46 (fourteen years ago) link

wowie wowie, listening to "Baby Can't Stop" for the first time now and it is A++. Is this on the same Lindstrom album as Tirsdagsjam from further up in the poll? I'm totally digging both of them at this point, would buy such a record.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 7 February 2010 18:20 (fourteen years ago) link

No, it's on lindstrom & christabelle (aka solale) - real life is no cool - different album, very different in feel.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Sunday, 7 February 2010 18:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Aeroplane remix >>>>>>> original

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 7 February 2010 18:23 (fourteen years ago) link

A lot of stuff from this thread is growing on me now that I just have it in a playlist and it's coming around unbidden - "Shine Blockas" for example is sounding really really nice. Thanks once again to musically and the group at large, I say this over and over again but this is such a great way to discover some new shit. Somehow way more reliable and interesting than say the P4K list, which many years ago would have served the same role for me...

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 7 February 2010 18:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Still kinda bewildered that no Fuck Buttons track ended up here , but guess we all had our favoured tracks. Assume it'll be the albums top50 - which starts tomorrow?

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Sunday, 7 February 2010 18:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Inflation was my #1, repped for it upthread. List goes a bit crap towards the top but some great stuff on here, Lemonade the only thing I really thought shld have made it.

ogmor, Sunday, 7 February 2010 18:55 (fourteen years ago) link

kinda glad there's no fuck buttons on this list

samosa gibreel, Sunday, 7 February 2010 18:57 (fourteen years ago) link

woulda liked to have seen surf solar

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 7 February 2010 19:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Fuck Buttons vote probably mad split, given how consistent the album is maybe there was just no consensus on the best track. I'd expect it to go top 10 in the albums poll, maybe even top 5.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Sunday, 7 February 2010 20:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I might be completely wrong about this, but Inflation reminds me of Township Funk by DJ Mujava.

And can we not take the "If you don't like this, you must not get out much" line? Nice strawman there.

ironically enough i never go out AT ALL, yet "I Gotta Feeling" was my number one (i think. Musically?). (hey, maybe it works better if you have to imagine the party in yr head like. but what do i know.)

the not-ratface one (Ioannis), Monday, 8 February 2010 08:57 (fourteen years ago) link

It totally sounds more like some idealized party than an actual party.

jesus is radric (The Reverend), Monday, 8 February 2010 09:00 (fourteen years ago) link

^^^and that's largely what makes it so fucking great imo.

the not-strawman one (Ioannis), Monday, 8 February 2010 09:13 (fourteen years ago) link

heh, a party song for people who don't party. i'd be tempted to go w/that but it's patently not true. it's a party song who don't party how i like to party, which tbh is the best way of partying.
