surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Friday, 5 February 2010 04:48 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that's my problem w/ these guys

The ss (J0rdan S.), Friday, 5 February 2010 04:49 (sixteen years ago)

when jacka does his melodic sing-song with the drawn out syllables, all overdubbed into infinity. it's incredible

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Friday, 5 February 2010 04:51 (sixteen years ago)

i don't really think there's any cohesive style, it just so happens that the few that get posted i here are pretty laid back

yes "sicilian breeze"

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Friday, 5 February 2010 04:57 (sixteen years ago)

berner is so laid back he sounds drugged

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Friday, 5 February 2010 04:58 (sixteen years ago)

berner sounds like an idiot. i kind of like him in a condescending doesnt-know-how-to-rap way though. his emphasis is weird. Its Like He Starts Every Word Like The Beginning Of A Sentence.

tbh i dont much love yelawolf. his album is cool & solid in a well-constructed way, i just dont think hes saying much as a rapper

i disagree that he's not saying anything interesting (what exactly is j stalin saying as a rapper), but even if he wasn't he technically creative & the production on that tape is dope as hell, just totally inventive & different than the other bama rap. even the vocal sampling on "lick the cat" (best nasty rap song i've heard this year) and "fuck you" sound fresh to me, and then he just rips normal boom-bap stuff like that joint w raekwon.

also he's an affecting singer

The ss (J0rdan S.), Friday, 5 February 2010 05:43 (sixteen years ago)

i had to run out in my pajamas and sing the hook on the lawn after deej's post

that jacka track deej posted is great.

deej it's kinda weird though cuz didn't you sorta hate on freddie gibbs for the same reasons you are defending j. stalin and jacka?

just curious, not trying to fight....as you know i believe boring, extremely competent rappers are the only Way Forward we have today.

and i don't find them "boring" but i know what people mean when they say that

i get mines the fast way, the balaclava way (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 5 February 2010 16:14 (sixteen years ago)

and, for the record i think yelawolf is a more exciting rapper in some ways than stalin, but i think the best of stalin's stuff has a great atmosphere and the sorta menacing tangerine dream thing is way more distinctive production than anything on yelawolf

i think how most rappers have "weed carries", budden has guys who do shifts watching cnn/refreshing cnn.com so he can make sure to date his songs as horribly as possible

the only rapper who has made any kind of sea-change rap style in the past couple years is gucci imo, its not like im only into rappers who make a huge impact or something tho. but i do tend to be drawn to rappers w/ a stronger personality & KRIT excepted, i think stalin/jacka have really strong personalities, even if they arent a 'way forward' -- or more accurately id argue that for 99% of rappers, including a bunch of my favorites past & present, personality IS the 'way forward' even if not all of them will have the impact of like eazy e / too short / biggie / pac / whoever else that had a huge stylistic impact

KRIT is an exception bcuz hes not really all that well defined yet & i could easily see him slipping into some annoying BOB/Lupe mode (i liked early Lupe tracks a lot I think i did a mediocre blog post about them once) but at this point he still feels like he has a lot of promise. freddie gibbs who again i do enjoy a whole bunch on some tracks esp 'murder on my mind' still feels like a really dry personality in a way that even KRIT doesnt (or KRIT is all over the place).

But Jacka and Stalin push a really strong personality through their raps? Like I hear a single line from Stalin & I can project this entire persona on him, cocky, sorta arrogant, but honest, charismatic center of attention type dude. I never get that from a single line of Pill's or Gibbs'.
