three months pass...

"Paris, Tokyo" = summer jam.

The Reverend, Monday, 7 July 2008 05:35 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

so, I just heard "I'm Beaming"

it's terrible

like, punch-Lupe-in-the-face terrible

big ginormous frowny face

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Monday, 28 June 2010 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

yeah when we opened for him in st peter he did a gang of new stuff and i got a bad vibe on the new album for sure

it's detlef season, you schremps (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 28 June 2010 16:34 (fifteen years ago)

like, how do you go from the reliably fantastic second half of The Cool to some extreme bullshit like that

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Monday, 28 June 2010 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

kanye, drake influence

it's detlef season, you schremps (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 28 June 2010 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, no doubt

I really just want to shake him, I was playing The Cool this weekend and it's still mostly unimpeachable (the only real weak spots are "Gold Watch" and "Paris, Tokyo")

I suppose going from playing "Little Weapon" on repeat to this tepid bullshit was dooming myself for disappointment, though

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Monday, 28 June 2010 16:43 (fifteen years ago)

i like 'im beaming' tbh

damn son that appaloosa shit is hot fire, good looks

r|t|c, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 00:15 (fifteen years ago)

the original version of "Nothin' On You" is hilarious, Lupe sounds vaguely embarrassed to be on the track even though it's not really any more soft serve than a lot of the stuff on his albums

~athdouspart (some dude), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

(the only real weak spots are "Gold Watch" and "Paris, Tokyo")

Those are my two favorite songs on the album.

suge ♞ (The Reverend), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 03:23 (fifteen years ago)

And "I'm Beaming" is a cute song with a cuter video but not really something I'd bump all the time.

suge ♞ (The Reverend), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 03:26 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, "Gold Watch" is like the best thing on that piece of shit. "Paris, Tokyo" too.

rennavate, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 03:28 (fifteen years ago)

it's not a piece of shit at all (which was quite the pleasant surprise after Food & Liquor)

suge ♞ (The Reverend), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 03:49 (fifteen years ago)

Hmmmm that was my reaction to it when it came out. Should I give it another listen?

rennavate, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 03:53 (fifteen years ago)

the real banger is "hip hop saved my life" which is the best song lupe has ever recorded aside from "kick, push"

incredible length (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 03:59 (fifteen years ago)

it's not all good, but at least 50% is dope imo

suge ♞ (The Reverend), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 04:02 (fifteen years ago)

lupe & MIA are two artists where i feel like if you delete half the shit from their two albums then you get one dope ass album

incredible length (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 04:03 (fifteen years ago)

shit was "kick, push" nominated in the 05-09 poll? i should've voted for it if so

incredible length (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

"Kick, Push" was pretty much the only good song on that album.

suge ♞ (The Reverend), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 04:11 (fifteen years ago)

I liked some other stuff on that album (especially "Daydreaming" and "American Terrorist") but not enough to really want to hear more by him. Weird to hear that people like "Paris, Tokyo," always thought that was one of the worst singles I'd ever heard, dude should not be allowed to do singsong hooks.

~athdouspart (some dude), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 11:21 (fifteen years ago)

The second half of The Cool is quite possibly my favorite stretch of music from that year (basically "Hip-Hop Saved My Life" through "Put You On Game"). Not really into "Paris, Tokyo", "High Definition" or "Gold Watch".

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 12:32 (fifteen years ago)

hip hop saved my life might even be better than kick, push...i love that song so much

it's detlef season, you schremps (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 13:22 (fifteen years ago)

you could totally slike "Paris, Tokyo" anywhere on Midnight Marauders. i'm really weirded out that someone could be actively annoyed by it, I feel like at worst it would just be inoffensive.

suge ♞ (The Reverend), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

That's part of the problem with it; it comes across as a labored pastiche of something done 15 years earlier. It's basically the storyline of "Award Tour" mixed in with half of the beat of "Electric Relaxation" without any of the charm of either of the two source songs, plus the beat is incredibly flat compared to the other songs on the album, very few of which are actually trying to evoke a bygone era of hip-hop.

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

also it came out after Lupe forgot Tribe lyrics on national TV and then tried to play it off by being all whatever i never listened to them anyway, which was so lame

ripe dink (some dude), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

eh, I don't care about that; if "Paris, Tokyo" struck me as a stronger song, the ATCQ pastiching wouldn't bother me

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

yah this album is a total load

deej, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

that is disappointing but not unexpected

goth barbershop quartet (DJP), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

DJP, is there anything redeeming on this? i recall you being Lupe's #1 apologist the last two albums (frankly yr enthusiasm was what made me listen in the first place, found 'em hit & miss tho)

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

First album was great imo. Second was just a ghost of the first. The new one is different animal, but it's a rodent with rabies and I'm calling Animal Control to come take it away.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

LOL!!!!!!

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

The Cool gets a really hard time but it has plenty of good moments, I always thought Go Baby would have been a huge hit for him if it had been put out as a single. It wasn't as good as the debut which is pretty solid apart from the never ending last song where he says thanks to everyone he's ever met.

I listened to Lasers this afternoon and thought it sounded okay to begin with but my about track five I was just desperate for it to end, it seemed to get worse as it went on. I have a big problem with the artwork too, did he really think that looked clever?
