Seeing B4L live, after lots of wispy sitting-at-the-piano songs, Daniel sounded positively ravey. It has this wonderful velocity that none of her other songs (well, Pearl's Dream to an extent) has.

"hysteric" was the consensus deep cut when the album came out, it's a great song but it prob shouldnt be on the list. didn't vote for it or any YYY

bat for lashes still just seems like a reeeeally weak version of tori amos or kate bush - though she's not doing anything actively terrible, has a nice voice and some actual ideas, so i do think she'll probably improve in the future

hmm #2 is kind of a headscratcher to me. no idea bat for lashes was popular!

given that it was it or another phoenix/YYY/fever ray album cut, i'm very pleased w/ daniel's placement

love kate bush, can't really stand tori amos, this 'daniel' track sounds more like pat benatar to me, with more reverb. not that that's a bad thing.

also I think ppl should listen to "Two Planets" and "Horse and I" because there's nothing particularly ethereal about either of them

i find myself weirdly a lot more kindly disposed to bat for lashes than the last time i thought about her, at the height of the hype - maybe this is just a post-la roux, post-florence, post-marina opinion - and i think i might quietly check out her album soon

xpost Maybe not expressing myself properly there. It's not that everything else is away with the fairies - Daniel just has an extra jolt of electricity. It rushes. But the whole album's one of my favourites of 09.

I think the tom-tom/timpani interplay in "Two Planets" mixed in with the vocal pitchshifting is the most electrifying moment on the album.

I think this is key - "Daniel" wasn't in my top 10 but its combination of stylistic allusions is just incredibly winning.

daniel's a fun listen; that video is unpleasant.

since I pretty much never see videos outside of ILM I'm sorta amused/horrified that both the B4L clip and the GaGa clip feature super-ridiculous 80s artsy backup dancers - they're like an even sillier version of the guys in that New Order video, or Bowie doing Scary Monsters material on SNL. Is this popular now?
