I'll cop to not having heard Daniel yet; listening now.

Really pumped about "Daniel" this high!

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I can't believe how animated I was about Daniel placing in an online poll that I didn't even vote in. Get a grip, me.

Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:26 (fourteen years ago) link

"Daniel" is overshadowed by a lot of other songs on that album IMO but I still like it a lot.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:26 (fourteen years ago) link

okay, so how the hell did "Hysteric" make this list and "Heads Will Roll" not?

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:26 (fourteen years ago) link

if YYYs take #1 my faith in ILM will be restored, just a little

iatee, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:27 (fourteen years ago) link

except it's going to be Taylor Swift unless I have grossly misjudged the tastes of the ffolks who post here

lol how the fuck did lady gaga sit down at the grammys?

okay, so how the hell did "Hysteric" make this list and "Heads Will Roll" not?

IMO this is a very valid question

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Seeing B4L live, after lots of wispy sitting-at-the-piano songs, Daniel sounded positively ravey. It has this wonderful velocity that none of her other songs (well, Pearl's Dream to an extent) has.

Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:28 (fourteen years ago) link

"hysteric" was the consensus deep cut when the album came out, it's a great song but it prob shouldnt be on the list. didn't vote for it or any YYY

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Hold on, we haven't had 'Paper Planes' yet.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:29 (fourteen years ago) link

bat for lashes still just seems like a reeeeally weak version of tori amos or kate bush - though she's not doing anything actively terrible, has a nice voice and some actual ideas, so i do think she'll probably improve in the future

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:29 (fourteen years ago) link

hmm #2 is kind of a headscratcher to me. no idea bat for lashes was popular!

goole, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:29 (fourteen years ago) link

given that it was it or another phoenix/YYY/fever ray album cut, i'm very pleased w/ daniel's placement

Have to say it's pretty fucken cool that we're waiting for #1 and no-one's really 100% sure what it's going to be.

The Man With the Magic Eardrums (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:30 (fourteen years ago) link

apart from musically of course.

xp*

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:30 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean "daniel" is basically tori or kate at their most ethereal/pretty, which is a tiny part of what they can do, but b4l seems pretty limited to that mode

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:30 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost Hmm, maybe in some cases, but that song is Kate Bush + Fleetwood Mac + The Cure's A Forest - it's on another level

Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:30 (fourteen years ago) link

um hate to spoil it for you but it's "you belong with me" by taylor swift

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:31 (fourteen years ago) link

i will THROW SHIT if it's not, what the hell is the other option?

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:31 (fourteen years ago) link

love kate bush, can't really stand tori amos, this 'daniel' track sounds more like pat benatar to me, with more reverb. not that that's a bad thing.

goole, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:32 (fourteen years ago) link

It has this wonderful velocity that none of her other songs (well, Pearl's Dream to an extent) has.

That's not even remotely true:

"Two Planets"
"Horse and I"
"Glass"
"Sleep Alone"
"Trophy"
"What's A Girl To Do?"

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:32 (fourteen years ago) link

(although maybe "groove" is more applicable to "Trophy" than "velocity")

also I think ppl should listen to "Two Planets" and "Horse and I" because there's nothing particularly ethereal about either of them

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:33 (fourteen years ago) link

i find myself weirdly a lot more kindly disposed to bat for lashes than the last time i thought about her, at the height of the hype - maybe this is just a post-la roux, post-florence, post-marina opinion - and i think i might quietly check out her album soon

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:34 (fourteen years ago) link

There's no way it isn't my parents fave song by taylor swift at no1

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:34 (fourteen years ago) link

okay, three listens into daniel and having seen b4L live, I kind of agree with lex's assessment

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:35 (fourteen years ago) link

Both of her albums are fantastic, IMO.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i didn't vote for a taylor swift song in this poll, btw.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:35 (fourteen years ago) link

^bad person

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i voted for the album!
do we start showing ballots after the final reveal?

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:36 (fourteen years ago) link

buying "two suns" right now

guammls (QE II), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:36 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost Maybe not expressing myself properly there. It's not that everything else is away with the fairies - Daniel just has an extra jolt of electricity. It rushes. But the whole album's one of my favourites of 09.

Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:36 (fourteen years ago) link

I think the tom-tom/timpani interplay in "Two Planets" mixed in with the vocal pitchshifting is the most electrifying moment on the album.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:37 (fourteen years ago) link

So right now it's Yeah Yeah Yeahs vs Taylor Swift for first?

Moka, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:38 (fourteen years ago) link

but that song is Kate Bush + Fleetwood Mac + The Cure's A Forest - it's on another level

I think this is key - "Daniel" wasn't in my top 10 but its combination of stylistic allusions is just incredibly winning.

Tim F, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:38 (fourteen years ago) link

No, it's just Taylor Swift for first. xp

Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:39 (fourteen years ago) link

daniel's a fun listen; that video is unpleasant.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 22:39 (fourteen years ago) link

since I pretty much never see videos outside of ILM I'm sorta amused/horrified that both the B4L clip and the GaGa clip feature super-ridiculous 80s artsy backup dancers - they're like an even sillier version of the guys in that New Order video, or Bowie doing Scary Monsters material on SNL. Is this popular now?

x-post
