like, I don't know if I can actually critique this because:

- She clearly is on her own type of idiosyncratic shit where blasting her for what makes her unique is missing the point of what she's trying to put across, like making fun of Macy Gray for having a gravelly voice.

- I haven't stopped laughing yet.

yah 4 me you miss that this isn't really a b+w issue tho

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

I know they weren't dating yet when her first album came out, but she was already the star of one of Andy Samberg's SNL Digital Shorts before they even met (or that's how "Sprout and the Bean" comes across to me).

The only Newsom song I ever liked was "Clam, Crab..."

newsom provokes extreme responses even within individual listeners.

I saw her live a few years ago... at first I was 'this is truly the most beautiful sound there has ever been in the history of the world'. three minutes later: 'OH GOD THIS IS JUST TERRIBLE, MAKE HER STOP'.

What black and white issue are you inventing here?

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:56 (sixteen years ago)

yeah theres like two type of ppl from what ur sayin, ppl who should sound "technically good " (which i dont get but) and people who are exempt bc of their "unique style" or being in a certain type of band

yeah i still don't really know what i think of her! idk whether her songs would be improved by a more "normal" voice but for the most part, no matter how much i admire what she's doing, the voice kind of...stops me listening to her ever.

That is not at all what I'm saying. Stop inventing stupid, asinine arguments and pretending like they're my positions.

you all need to just listen to the harp solos

let's not pretend Newsom's "thing" is some kind of wildly inventive Meredith Monk singing. she just puts on a weird affect and belts it out.

Stop fighting and start demanding #6!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:02 (sixteen years ago)

if I am taking too long to post the next one it is not because I am trying to draw it out! I get on calls and meetings which unfortunately take precedence over "internet polls," or so I imagine my manager would think.

The inventiveness of her music isn't her voice, it's her craft - the songwriting, sense of movement and melody, and her way with words. very few albums of the last album flowed so naturally through so many gorgeous melodies as 'Ys'.

Your manager has odd priorities.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:04 (sixteen years ago)

just noticed the title is probably "Baby Can't Stop"?

It's kind of hard to appreciate the gorgeous melodies when they're being song by someone who sounds like a goose being put through a garlic press.

In fact, one might expect shellshocked laughter to be the initial response.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:06 (sixteen years ago)

Btw, I don't really get the Lindstrom + Christabelle thing.

Mordy, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, she's a fine harpist (is that the word?), but she needs to take a back seat on her own recordings when it comes to singing. Do a Carlos Santana deal and bring in your pals.

It's a nice song, but it sounds like a lot of other music I've heard -- it's not particularly memorable or distinguishable to me. (the Lindstrom - not the Newsom)

Mordy, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

ahhh who was it who pointed out that the "smooth criminal" bite on "tirsdagsjam" is a really great foreshadowing of lindstrøm's jackson pastiche on "baby can't stop"

<3 l&c

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

The Lindstrøm & Christabelle thing is just a really good nouveau disco track, though I was slightly disappointed by the album as a whole for not making a real effort.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

Sweet, we have two Newsom threads running simultaneously now!

ksh, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

i got really stressed out a few hours ago trying to do five things at once and i put on the lindstrøm & christabelle album and it really worked a treat in calming me

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

btw the first one is not a remix, it's the original mix

just trying the dirty projectors and sprout/bean youtubes simultaneously. works well at times.
