I think those girls are more talented than a Cobain wannabe at Guitar Center, and if you're equating my singing capability to Yngwie Malmsteen's guitar-playing ability I am never going to sing for you so that you continue thinking I'm that ridiculously talented!

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

Dan's contributions to singing/vocalist conversation are like Grant on Mythbusters telling the audience the nuts and bolts of something while Tory and Kari are fucking around setting things on fire.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

"yngwie type" :P

aw

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

it sounds like the singers are not technically good enough to succeed at what it sounds like they're trying to succeed at. but maybe they don't care and they like the glitches, which might make them super clever but i'd rather hear joanna newsom than that.

do you want to be happier? (whatever), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

so to be closer to your analogy, if the Cobain type is bashing his way through Ygnwie-esque music, I don't think it's out of line for the Yngwie-type to comment on how it is supposed to go

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:39 (sixteen years ago)

xp: ugh son

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:40 (sixteen years ago)

(I mean, I'm not going to give vocal pointers on how to sing "Rise" by PiL in tune, for example.)

Maybe it's participatory discrepancy.

Mordy, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

do you want to be happier? (whatever), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

ugh the song isn't nearly as tedious as dan's x's and o's-style crit would lead you to believe.

ha for a minute i was wondering if all our voter intimidating in the other thread would prevent "my girls" from showing up. still not likely, though "stillness" >>> "my girls"

xp what plax and and SS said

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

I was going to OTM Dan before the big post OTMed itself. I love the sly frosty guitar line, the strings+Dave Longstreth hugging an alpaca or just rotating on the mountain thinking about things, but the singing isn't smooth enough to gel w/the rest. Talent is empty&I don't care about it, but their singing here feels like more of an unhappy accident than design.

ogmor, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:44 (sixteen years ago)

that sex version of "blue thunder." (Mr. Que), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:46 (sixteen years ago)

like i think its not really going too far to say that their voices match the concept which is "warped, distended rnb stitched back together out of broken indie rock"

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:46 (sixteen years ago)

like ur not supposed to be comparing the vocals to solange

rhea perlman is "horrible" (jjjusten), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

like, I don't know if I can actually critique this because:

- She clearly is on her own type of idiosyncratic shit where blasting her for what makes her unique is missing the point of what she's trying to put across, like making fun of Macy Gray for having a gravelly voice.

- I haven't stopped laughing yet.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

yah 4 me you miss that this isn't really a b+w issue tho

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

I know they weren't dating yet when her first album came out, but she was already the star of one of Andy Samberg's SNL Digital Shorts before they even met (or that's how "Sprout and the Bean" comes across to me).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

please to give us #6?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:55 (sixteen years ago)

newsom provokes extreme responses even within individual listeners.

I saw her live a few years ago... at first I was 'this is truly the most beautiful sound there has ever been in the history of the world'. three minutes later: 'OH GOD THIS IS JUST TERRIBLE, MAKE HER STOP'.
