REVENGE OF THE GAPDY

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

having resigned myself to this placing a while ago, i'm really happy to see it here, and not higher (ie: i am rooting for "my girls" to show up next)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

tbh, I expected it to be higher, ha!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

i do like the strings at the end

they almost make up for the annoying aspects

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

wow she is kind of terrible

I like the rest of the song tho

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:42 (sixteen years ago)

she-wolf is OK, but it should be far, far wilder given the video and the subject matter. the song itself is far too domesticated.

yeah i posted similar on another thread. she gazelle more like etc.

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:42 (sixteen years ago)

pro-tip: if your doubled vocals are a quarter-step off, re-record them

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:42 (sixteen years ago)

I actually do like this song when I hear it (I even voted for it), but I'll be glad to get a little distance from it and come back in a year or two.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:43 (sixteen years ago)

it's kind of hilarious actually, the vocal doubling is making her sound much worse than if they'd just left it alone because of the dissonance

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

Firs time I've heard dirty projectors and its not what i expected but its still horrid. UGH!

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

haha i'm so glad dan is backing me up here, all the press about DPs this year has tried to portray their singer as a mariah-esque virtuoso and it's just like UH NO, she is YELPING OUT OF TUNE

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:45 (sixteen years ago)

oh god i'd forgotten about the horrid "isn't life under the sun a crazy dream" bit

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:46 (sixteen years ago)

the vocal doubling is making her sound much worse than if they'd just left it alone because of the dissonance

Despite what the video shows you, there are actually two girls singing in unison.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:46 (sixteen years ago)

The raw material is definitely there! She needs a much, much better ear.

xp: AH that explains a lot. They need to fire one of them.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

overrated track but i still kinda like it.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

I really liked everything about that except for the singing; the tuning was not very good at all and brings everything down.

I would try to get into these guys but I suspect the tuning issues would drive me insane.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

ur a muso tho

cozen, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:52 (sixteen years ago)

yeah if this drives you insane the rest of their stuff is prob not for you

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

this list is still perfect, i voted for 'no intention' but 'stillness is the move' was the first song i loved off of the album and obviously the most ear-friendly to the general population as there's no dave longstreth in it. shame i have class at 2 30, each new placing unfolding brings us nearer and nearer to impending doom of 'my girls' at #1, it's such a nail-biter.

samosa gibreel, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:54 (sixteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure they're singing perfectly well from a technical pov. who are you guys to know, anyways?

samosa gibreel, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

Dan knows.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

I don't get what you mean by "tuning not very good" Hi Dere. The song has an unusual and complex melodic contour, and to sing that melody in unisom has got to be tough, (even moreso the close harmonies). I think the vocals overall are amazing on this. what little bit of pitch variance there is enhances this imo.

Dan S, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

I'm kinda o_O that THIS is what all the 09 DP hype was about, but it still seems like a pretty good tune. Shrill yelping at the end doesn't argue its case very well, tho.

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

someone needs to get that bitch an autotuner amirite

samosa gibreel, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

guys i think the thing about dan and singing is that he's picking up on stuff that the rest of us are not even really hearing so best just to let it go

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

haha i'm so glad dan is backing me up here, all the press about DPs this year has tried to portray their singer as a mariah-esque virtuoso and it's just like UH NO, she is YELPING OUT OF TUNE

unfair. I don't like this song and didn't understand all the hype it received, but I do think the vocals are good. true, she's not mariah-esque, but for that she should be thankful.

m the g, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

uh oh

cozen, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

the ululating/melisma thing kinda annoys me even when people do it well or are more widely perceived as having done it well. a bit like scat.

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

#6 plz!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:02 (sixteen years ago)

haha okay ppl

First off, this isn't THAT unusual or complex to me. Then again, I'm a professional chorister who has sung a shit-tone of twelve-tone music by Britten, Pinkham and Tavener.

Secondly, if you are basing so many important rest points on notes in the scale that aren't part of the foundational chord, if you sing them flat (which happens a LOT in the first two lines; hell, she starts the song on a minor 3rd which is a note in the chord and is still slightly under), you're going to fuck up the musical impact the song is supposed to have and make life hell for anyone trying to harmonize with you (the vocal lines don't actually lock into each other until they hit the word "highway"; the upper voice is sharp on "get a job" and the lower voice is slightly flat, keeping the chord they're going for out of tune). The don't really pull things together until the bridge and the top voice is still slightly off.

If you're going to do shit like this, your intonation needs to be in sync with the people you're singing with; it isn't as bad if you all go flat or sharp together, but when one person is riding sharp and the other is riding flat, you're fucked. Also note that I don't think anyone is singing wrong notes here; they are not singing the notes they're on the way they need to in order for the chords to be in tune.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:12 (sixteen years ago)

"shit-tone"

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

haha oops, paging Freud (altho I do actually dig Brittenand Tavener, who's really more minimalist, a lot)

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

btw thanx for that explanation of what's happening on the verses, it always sounds a little wonky to me--like the girls were just below their range or something

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

thanks for the clarification, Dan! I didn't realize you were thinking about this on such an expert level.

Dan S, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

DanP, no offense, but like isn't your eval of that song's vox (which on first listen, is balls ftktah) kinda like some yngwie type critiquing a cobain wannabe at guitar center?

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:29 (sixteen years ago)

that video is way out of tune visually

do you want to be happier? (whatever), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:31 (sixteen years ago)

thing abt dan and singing is that all his rules for what is "good" or "right" seem kindof irrelevant to me, like just bc someone is a "technically" better singer doesnt mean i want to hear them, so everytime he complains abt stuff like tuning i'm like "i rilly dont care"

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

xxp that would be reasonable if Kurt man tried to tell Yngwie man that Cobain-style guitar technique represented the form's pinnacle of versatility, wouldn't it?

Send me an e-mail and tell me of your bulging desires (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:34 (sixteen years ago)

can we change the board description to "shit-tone" plz

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:34 (sixteen years ago)

I think those girls are more talented than a Cobain wannabe at Guitar Center, and if you're equating my singing capability to Yngwie Malmsteen's guitar-playing ability I am never going to sing for you so that you continue thinking I'm that ridiculously talented!

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

Dan's contributions to singing/vocalist conversation are like Grant on Mythbusters telling the audience the nuts and bolts of something while Tory and Kari are fucking around setting things on fire.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

"yngwie type" :P

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

aw

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

it sounds like the singers are not technically good enough to succeed at what it sounds like they're trying to succeed at. but maybe they don't care and they like the glitches, which might make them super clever but i'd rather hear joanna newsom than that.

do you want to be happier? (whatever), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

so to be closer to your analogy, if the Cobain type is bashing his way through Ygnwie-esque music, I don't think it's out of line for the Yngwie-type to comment on how it is supposed to go

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:39 (sixteen years ago)

xp: ugh son

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:40 (sixteen years ago)

(I mean, I'm not going to give vocal pointers on how to sing "Rise" by PiL in tune, for example.)

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

supposed
