Best thing about She Wolf is the video.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:54 (sixteen years ago)

anyone predicting indie domination of top ten not feelin so smart right now..

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:56 (sixteen years ago)

Well, there's still 7 more to go.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:56 (sixteen years ago)

And there's only one legit rap track in the top 20 so far (because fuck a BEP).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

i love that shakira exists

zvookster, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:58 (sixteen years ago)

("In the NA" never had a chance... *sadface*)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i can get down to / get with that Shakira track more than any BEP

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

(of course another way it makes sense dramatically is the pause for pouring)

zvookster, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:06 (sixteen years ago)

i love that shakira exists

me too, but neither version of "she wolf" does much for me.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:07 (sixteen years ago)

i kind of feel that the way people go on about "she wolf", it should be one of those irresistible pop songs that i crave to hear over and over again, on loop for an hour, but months on i'm still stuck in the "eh, don't mind this when it comes on" stage.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:10 (sixteen years ago)

nb i do <3 shakira of course, my fav shakira song is "underneath your clothes" by miles

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:10 (sixteen years ago)

I like her Timbaland song a little more but "She Wolf" is fun enough for me.

also yes she is smokin' hot and that totally biases me towards the appreciation of her music

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:11 (sixteen years ago)

my fav shakira song is "underneath your clothes" by miles

pretty much all the singles from that album trump her subsequent english-language singles, imo. i'm not a big "hips don't lie" fan either (partly because of ugh-wyclef).

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:13 (sixteen years ago)

"objection (tango)" <3 <3 <3

i think...i feel her voice just works better with more, uh, organic arrangements?

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

like i buy her more as a kooky folkie rather than some sort of disco diva

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

just to clarify, cuz I'm dense: she wolf represents votes cast for 'she wolf' AND 'loba', right?

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

I know a lot of people were down on this year's Junior Boys album, but I'm surprised Hazel didn't crack the top 50 trax (I don't see it coming up in the top 8, anyway).

― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, February 2, 2010 5:41 PM (35 minutes ago) Bookmark

I voted for Begone Dull Care and both the songs nominated, whilst it might not be the same quality as the first two albums it was easily one of my favorites of the year.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

if anything "mazel tov" seems a bit try-hard to me, it's a bit...i got her...GROCERY BAG

"mazel tov" has 0% to do w/ my enjoyment of the song, but this comparison makes no sense to me. also that's gotta be the first time anyone has accused Gudda Gudda of trying hard.

sicker than your vag (some dude), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

we've never done a Shakira singles poll, have we? i'm gonna go work on that.

two (quik/kurupt, jay-z). don't see any more coming, unless our "sauce" bloc vote paid off.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

Did anyone vote 'Loba' AND 'She Wolf'? That'd be a bit unfair.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, oops. W/o going back to check, I was thinking Jay-Z was #21.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

Shakira's Hot 100 hits

sicker than your vag (some dude), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

#20 xp

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

she-wolf is good&bad goofy, the really straight rhythm kills the tune but otoh gives us shakira's classic jerky dance.

ogmor, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

she-wolf is OK, but it should be far, far wilder given the video and the subject matter. the song itself is far too domesticated. objection: tango her finest hour to date.

still, lily allen, shakira... this list is looking up.

REVENGE OF THE GAPDY

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

having resigned myself to this placing a while ago, i'm really happy to see it here, and not higher (ie: i am rooting for "my girls" to show up next)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

tbh, I expected it to be higher, ha!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

i do like the strings at the end

they almost make up for the annoying aspects

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

wow she is kind of terrible

I like the rest of the song tho

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:42 (sixteen years ago)

she-wolf is OK, but it should be far, far wilder given the video and the subject matter. the song itself is far too domesticated.

yeah i posted similar on another thread. she gazelle more like etc.

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:42 (sixteen years ago)

pro-tip: if your doubled vocals are a quarter-step off, re-record them

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:42 (sixteen years ago)

I actually do like this song when I hear it (I even voted for it), but I'll be glad to get a little distance from it and come back in a year or two.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:43 (sixteen years ago)

it's kind of hilarious actually, the vocal doubling is making her sound much worse than if they'd just left it alone because of the dissonance

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

Firs time I've heard dirty projectors and its not what i expected but its still horrid. UGH!

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

haha i'm so glad dan is backing me up here, all the press about DPs this year has tried to portray their singer as a mariah-esque virtuoso and it's just like UH NO, she is YELPING OUT OF TUNE

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:45 (sixteen years ago)

oh god i'd forgotten about the horrid "isn't life under the sun a crazy dream" bit

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:46 (sixteen years ago)

the vocal doubling is making her sound much worse than if they'd just left it alone because of the dissonance

Despite what the video shows you, there are actually two girls singing in unison.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:46 (sixteen years ago)

The raw material is definitely there! She needs a much, much better ear.

xp: AH that explains a lot. They need to fire one of them.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

overrated track but i still kinda like it.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

I really liked everything about that except for the singing; the tuning was not very good at all and brings everything down.

I would try to get into these guys but I suspect the tuning issues would drive me insane.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

ur a muso tho

cozen, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:52 (sixteen years ago)

yeah if this drives you insane the rest of their stuff is prob not for you

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

this list is still perfect, i voted for 'no intention' but 'stillness is the move' was the first song i loved off of the album and obviously the most ear-friendly to the general population as there's no dave longstreth in it. shame i have class at 2 30, each new placing unfolding brings us nearer and nearer to impending doom of 'my girls' at #1, it's such a nail-biter.

samosa gibreel, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:54 (sixteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure they're singing perfectly well from a technical pov. who are you guys to know, anyways?

samosa gibreel, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

Dan knows.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

I don't get what you mean by "tuning not very good" Hi Dere. The song has an unusual and complex melodic contour, and to sing that melody in unisom has got to be tough, (even moreso the close harmonies). I think the vocals overall are amazing on this. what little bit of pitch variance there is enhances this imo.
