Black Eyed Peas officially made this thread a joke. I can't wait to see Taylor Swift and Brad Paisley in the top 10!

GOOD MUSIC WILL WIN!

2005 was a great year for music everywhere

musically, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 08:33 (fourteen years ago) link

the 2005 list really does win life.

ahhh "promise" placing in the 06 list - IIRC it only emerged in dec 06 so that's good going.

my prob w/"i gotta feeling" isn't nec how cheesy it is - i just don't think it's that catchy, i find it really weak and insipid and even now i don't think i could sing it offhand (though i'd recognise it if i heard it). it just strikes me as really lazily tossed together, which is the case for a lot of the tracks on the BEPs album (i mean the verses of "meet me halfway"?? what is even the point of having them?). it completely baffles me that it's so ubiquitous and popular - yeah the sentiment is right but the hook just isn't there. and i still don't get why "mazel tov" is meant to be funny.

i'm totally sick of "boom boom pow" but it's def much better and i'm sure it'll place in the top 10.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 09:44 (fourteen years ago) link

incidentally the 2005 list has close to none indie artists. WIN!

Emily's Cheese, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 09:46 (fourteen years ago) link

I didn't think much of 'I Gotta Feeling', but then one day the chorus just got me - still couldn't sing a verse if I tried, but the chorus is your hook and that's enough. 'Boom Boom Pow' is amazing, but also one of those records that you can wear out in a sitting and never need to hear again.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 09:59 (fourteen years ago) link

i think my pet hate in pop might be songs overly weighted towards the chorus, and then when you point out how sucky the verses are people go "oh but the CHORUS is so big, who cares about the verses" and it's like...well the verses take up most time! nothing worse than people awkwardly bobbing around a dancefloor trying to pass time during shitty verses, waiting for the big chorus to come in

not that i even think "i gotta feeling" has a big chorus but oh well.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 10:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Ha ha I was about to say "I think the reason a lot of people like this stuff is that structurally they're kinda into songs which cycle between do nothing verses and big choruses."

Having said that I don't think that's true of "I Gotta Feeling", which is pretty "big" throughout, to the point where it doesn't really have verses as such.

Tim F, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 10:17 (fourteen years ago) link

damn tim you aren't kidding

It's actually difficult to think of a track which is more pandemonium-inducing on the dancefloor if you're amongst friends and they all know it.

Although I'm probably biased b/c it's one of the tracks me and my friend Catherine always dance to together (see also: "Friend Lover", the Quentin Harris remix of "Spotlight").

Tim F, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 10:19 (fourteen years ago) link

the year when JLC was remixer du jour was so awesome, and yeah the missy/ciara remix was prob the highlight - the way he loops cici's rap is amazing - post-madonna he's done literally nothing of worth tho ;_;

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 10:24 (fourteen years ago) link

I know! What a drop-off - lest we forget that year he also had The Killers (I can't remember if you hate that one lex?), Fischerspooner (woah), Juliet...

Tim F, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 10:34 (fourteen years ago) link

nah the killers one is amazing - felix da housecat dropped it at tdk that year after he'd overrun and the organisers were trying to remove him from behind the decks even as he kept swigging from a bottle of tequila. it was pretty special.

gwen stefani and britney spears too...

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 10:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh yeah them too!

When I saw Felix that year he intro'd in complete darkness with a dub of the Gwen mix that looped the "tic toc" bit for ever and ever.

this is otm, but works better as a critique of, say, "Empire State of Mind" than of "I Gotta Feeling"

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 10:53 (fourteen years ago) link

i had genuinely forgotten the juliet one - listening back now and WHOA, so big...he was such a genius in the way he framed vocals so that they sounded 100x more emotional

xp yeah def works for ESOM - as i say i don't even think "i gotta feeling" has a big chorus

"Blind" is good, but the Frankie Knuckles remix is perfect.

i never elevated that JLC remix of Missy over the Felix and Juliet ones but then i liked the original Lose Control to the point where i felt like his formula wouldn't add much. he spent half his time remixing already excellent tracks and the other half making the likes of Starsailor and Texas more tolerable.

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 13:19 (fourteen years ago) link

i love how it seems like every time someone admits to liking/loving something deemed unworthy by general consensus there's a groundswell of likeminded guilty pleasures making themselves known, which then just snowballs til next thing you know 'i gotta feelin' = 'one more time'

― samosa gibreel, Tuesday, February 2, 2010 12:18 AM (8 hours ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

the thing about this is, "I Gotta Feeling" wasn't deemed unworthy by general consensus, otherwise it wouldn't have been #12 in this poll (or #19 in P&J). it's just got a lot of haters in addition to its supporters, not unlike Animal Collective or a lot of other things in these polls. it's only "unworthy" in the sense that BEP are painfully uncool and the people who voted for it aren't supposed to vote for it and at least stick with pop or rap that's more tasteful to endorse.

This is basically the most OTM thing said about the Black Eyed Peas in the last 12 months.

Doesn't make it a bad song, either. All it really means is that there is very little middle ground with them.

My crap predictions: Bad Romance, You Belong With Me, Russian Roulette, Daniel, Baby Can't Stop, My Girls, Stillness Is The Move, Lisztomania, House Of Flying Daggers, Heads Will Roll.

Also possible: Surf Solar, The Fear, Boom Boom Pow, She Wolf, Two Weeks.

"Boom Boom Pow" ain't gonna make it, didn't finish ahead of "I Gotta Feeling" in P&J and definitely won't here

sicker than your vag (some dude), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 15:50 (fourteen years ago) link

Wondering if the votes for Loba and She Wolf were put together; if so (even if not) it really should be in the finals

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 15:51 (fourteen years ago) link

also can't believe "Russian Roulette" is still being floated as a possibility! the rest of your picks look likely, though. (xpost)

I'm really hoping for "The Fear." Even though it was technically eligible last year (digital release), I held off voting for it until this year (physical release).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 15:53 (fourteen years ago) link

"boom boom pow" is loads more ilxish than "i gotta feeling", i think, and yeah "she wolf" is a shoe-in even though it's not THAT good

good call on "baby can't stop", hadn't thought of that but it should def be up there

not a CLUE what'll be no 1
