i think the "94 Ho Draft" skit that's recurring throughout is a little strained but worth including.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 1 February 2010 22:56 (sixteen years ago)

Oh yeah "Tell Me Why"! I'd put that in the "Fearless" / "Fifteen" / "Tell Me Why" block. Chorus is excellent, yes.

Tim F, Monday, 1 February 2010 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

it took me ages to even get to the second half of fearless because i had to play the first half on loop so much - it's just as strong though, i think i'd only drop "change"

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 1 February 2010 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

haha that's exactly what happens to me every time i listen to it

samosa gibreel, Monday, 1 February 2010 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

i don't even recognize half the songs tim named by name, my brain is so knocked flat by that initial run it's all just formless and i instantly disconnect

samosa gibreel, Monday, 1 February 2010 22:59 (sixteen years ago)

i'm happy that we manged not to vote a 85th generation wu-tang single into the top 15 of a year end poll - of course i'll take the crow if it shows up but i'll already be drowning in my own tears

You're so right. Better to save those top spots for the bland and inoffensive AOR and tween-pop.

Parenthetical Grillz, Monday, 1 February 2010 23:03 (sixteen years ago)

I feel like I'm the only person in the world who can't see what's so amazing about Taylor Swift. Everything I've heard from her sounds like slightly above average country-pop (OK, "You Belong To Me" is pretty good)... Seriously, what is it?

Re "Tell Me Why", my favourite bit is the chorus where she sings "So here's to you and your temper - yes, I remember what you said last night!" Which simultaneously sounds totally spontaneous and in-conversation while also being so composed that it flows perfectly.

Tim F, Monday, 1 February 2010 23:06 (sixteen years ago)

There's a lot I like about Taylor but the first two things that come to mind is her fluency in the songwriting; everything is always done with such spectacular craftsmanship and pride in work. It's like when you see an antique chair from the 1890's and it's all handmade and properly planed and the joints are perfect.
I'm also always blown away by her ability to make everything sound honest and personal. plenty of singing is acting (MJ sure hadn't had a love that he wanted back that bad at that age) and Taylor's a great actor.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 1 February 2010 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Monday, 1 February 2010 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

I am mad impressed with her songwriting ability, to restate a positive thing I've said about her before that gets lost in the kerfluffle of how much I dislike her singing.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Monday, 1 February 2010 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

I was hoping "The Fear" would chart. At this point, it seems unlikely :(

I think it has a chance. As good of one as Miley, prob.

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Monday, 1 February 2010 23:10 (sixteen years ago)

tim and forks otm - i also love how she knows exactly when to raise the drama stakes and when to underplay a situation, so "i don't know how it gets better than this" is a perfect rush of joy on the title track, but then on "breathe" she just casually shrugs "people are people and sometimes we change our minds", and it's just devastating.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 1 February 2010 23:12 (sixteen years ago)

I think "Forever & Always" is often my favourite because of the zinginess of "...you said you loved me - WERE YOU JUST KIDDING?"

i'm so glad that the one vote i used on a deep album cut paid off. i mean in all honesty "fancy" is prob song of the year.

apparently on youtube it's really frustrating because it cuts off just after the huge chord change segueing into "right side of my brain" - so get the album, folks.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 00:05 (sixteen years ago)

as for the other two...i can hear why someone might like "1901" but not why anyone would get, like, really excited over it.

i'm really sick of BEPs as a group, none of their big hits this year were particularly special (though the others were at least ok), i really want another fergie solo album - that's where she and will.i.am had their best ideas. (i don't credit the other two w/having ideas.) i still have no idea why the "mazel tov" bit in this song is meant to be funny or entertaining.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 00:05 (sixteen years ago)

i guess i'm happier at "fancy" placing than i thought i'd be - if it means no "my girls" or something then hell yes, i'm head over heels in love with the song anyway

wtf lebron, that chick doesn't need a gatorade bath (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 00:06 (sixteen years ago)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 00:09 (sixteen years ago)

had I ordered my tracks, per initial list, there would've been three #1 votes for Fancy. lol.

Alex in Montreal, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 00:10 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, when the drums come in at the end of Fancy it's FUCKING MASSIVE. by holding off on a beat for 90% of the song, the payoff when it finally drops is that much greater.

Alex in Montreal, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 00:10 (sixteen years ago)

Yikes--->BEP

Guess that makes any complaints about GAPDY or Taylor Swift moot though.
