YAY FOTL!

i think i was one of the #1 votes for that as well.

(speaking of which/broken record, musically if i could get a copy of my ballot, that would be great - if youve sent it already a bunch of times i will search my junk mail)

i like it cause it's got a great floating quality and is great to listen to while biking, but in the context of dubstep i believe hyph mngo is a welcome step towards the effeminate and delicate in a genre that tends to be dominated by ugly bass riffs and the like.

samosa gibreel, Monday, 1 February 2010 21:23 (fourteen years ago) link

is that the last one for today?

every time i'm like "why the hell do ppl like this song so much?" i listen to it & remember how dope it is

btw everyone joy orbison the dude is fine as hell

big hoos state of mind (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 February 2010 21:26 (fourteen years ago) link

it's very invigorating as far as dub step goes -- that "oooooooh" is a blood rush

Me too please. I sent you an email as you requested on the ballot discussion thread but if you replied I missed it. Thanks.

otm - plus this branch of dubstep (more feminine, melodic, more open to house/techno/r&b) really developed strongly this year (guido and darkstar elsehwre in the poll, plus a host of others), and joy orbison was definitely the critical poster boy of the genre.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 1 February 2010 21:27 (fourteen years ago) link

honestly no idea if any of my actual votes will place now - reasonably confident in one of them, but it'd be a really nice surprise if any more r&b singles or female mc-driven funky/dancehall trax came up

I haven't sent any ballots back yet, I'll try to do them all tonight...

musically, Monday, 1 February 2010 21:30 (fourteen years ago) link

any MORE that is - already voted for crazy cousinz, guido and pill here.

Thanks again Musically!

EZ Snappin, Monday, 1 February 2010 21:32 (fourteen years ago) link

hyphy mango is fine but it is not the homerun of some of the joker/guido tracks. I even liked BEBA better. Can't hate on it though.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 1 February 2010 21:38 (fourteen years ago) link

and i think cold or bad habits are both a little better than pretty wings, but not complaining.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 1 February 2010 21:38 (fourteen years ago) link

if theyre both somewhere in the dubstep spectrum (i'm really not up on this stuff) i like the guido track much much more than hyph mngo

dont think any of my votes r gonna place now which is weird bc i voted a lot of ilmfaves i thought but persp i guess

plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 1 February 2010 21:40 (fourteen years ago) link

none of the youtube versions I've seen of Hyph Mngo include the slow build up at the beginning, with the banging sounds and distant crowd noises. It's that build up, with the successive sustained two-chord announcement, ecstatic vocals, and great bassline/percussion coming in one after the other that make this track such a rush for me

Hm. Seems pretty low when you consider that it only got two more votes than Hey Playa.

Any chance of House of Flying Daggers showing up?

"House of Flying Daggers" hasn't appeared yet...

i'm happy that we manged not to vote a 85th generation wu-tang single into the top 15 of a year end poll - of course i'll take the crow if it shows up but i'll already be drowning in my own tears

big hoos state of mind (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 February 2010 22:13 (fourteen years ago) link

So... what's left overall?

My Girls
Stillness Is the Move
1901
Daniel
Two Weeks
Heads Will Roll
Lisztomania
Bad Romance
You Belong with Me
Fancy?
Surf Solar?
House of Flying Daggers?

Pretty sure about the first 9, reasonably sure about the last 3... and that leaves one missing from the top 13.

i didn't think most of those had any real ilm concensus and the ppl who were reppin for them had higher priorities iirc

Does Digidesign have any sort of traction here?

Parenthetical Grillz, Monday, 1 February 2010 22:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I think we'd better prepare to be disappointed how much consensus there is among P&J, Pfork, etc. and our poll. Groupthink is a very powerful thing and unfortunately, I can't see any of those first 9 tracks going top 10-20 in P&J/Pfork and then missing the top 50 of an ILM voter set that pays pretty consistent attention to those sites/polls, even if it's under the guise of bitching about them more often than not.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 1 February 2010 22:18 (fourteen years ago) link

was "party in the usa" even nom'd?

big hoos state of mind (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 February 2010 22:18 (fourteen years ago) link

lemonade is a good call i think

zvookster, Monday, 1 February 2010 22:18 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm still amazed that the dirty projectors somehow became a consensus indie band, i kind of ignored them for a few years after mildly liking the "getty address" album despite its lack of traditional pop hooks or anything catchy that would suggest a breakout album to come

ciderpress, Monday, 1 February 2010 22:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Miley I can see getting left out.

"Digidesign" was on my ballot but it's not gonna place here. "Hyph Mngo" is pretty much the cutoff point for all things dubstep in 2009 polls, unfortunately.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 1 February 2010 22:19 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't know about 'two weeks' and '1901' but otherwise those seem pretty unstoppable
