The grammar of the sentence you decided to pick on is decidedly unambiguous, Custos! YOU'RE LETTING THE SIDE DOWN.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno, if mediocre=great, then does that mean that really good must=law enforced genius?
i can't subscribe to that equation, it makes way too many good bands epic when they're clearly not, and makes the good bands eternally grand...
so, in closing i'd like to say that mediocrity still= eh...or bland.
yr pick.

eedd, Wednesday, 6 August 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The grammar of the sentence you decided to pick on is decidedly unambiguous, Custos!
the "is blind" clause is poor.
Saying "Your hatred is blind. DMB is the Last Great American Band."

The grammar of the sentence you decided to pick on is decidedly unambiguous, Custos!
the "is blind" clause sticks out like a sore schwantzen.
It would've been stronger and more direct to say "Your hatred is blind. DMB is the Last Great American Band."
Say his old version and then this new version out loud. You'll hear what I mean.

Have you never heard of a prepositional phrase? Good God.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Prepositional phrases? Yeah, I heard of them. I thought they had a nice beat, but I couldn't dance to them. I gave them a 65.
Your hatred of...
...the last great american band is blind.

all I know or care about the sentence above is that the last seven words (if you didn't notice the first three) puts a funny mental image of Dafe Mettews with dark glasses a white cane and a seeing eye dog...and above his head is a billboard that says "There Are No Great American Bands Past This Point. Turn Back Now."

Beyond that, I R Thinx Grammar B Boring.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't even know why I'm continuing this conversation, but breaking the sentence at that point shows that either you are willing to sacrifice all credibility for wildly unfunny jokes or you have no idea how English actually works and therefore fit right in with the DMB supporters you are mocking.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

There's no need to get nasty, Dan.

"but breaking the sentence at that point..."
Are you referring to where I broke it into two sentences 3 posts ago (when I tried to improve the sentence), or when I put the pause between "hatred of" and "the last great" (when I was isolating "the last great american band is blind")?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I went to several Dave Matthews Band shows between 1995 and 1999 or so, and what I found was that the biggest attraction (for a large portion of the "fanbase") seemed to be hanging out in the parking lot before the show and getting wasted. This is fine. In fact, just over a year ago, a friend and I went to a venue about two hours before a DMB show, armed with loads of tiaras we'd made from curling ribbon and garlands and, thanks to all the drunk and stoned people, were able to sell all fifty of them (at five dollars a pop) in less than an hour. For this reason, I really can't complain about drunk kids in parking lots.
BUT. I must say that the times I actually did go in to see what this Dave Matthews legendary live music whatever you like to call it was all about, I found that pretty much all of the people around me were just drunkenly shouting, groping each other, passing out, vomiting and drinking more. So OF COURSE they were having a good time, regardless of what was happening on the stage. Anyway, I'd be interested to know how many of these DMB=BEST MUSIC EVER, YOU JUST HAVE TO SEE THEM LIVE google people have been to a Dave Matthews show sober.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, Kirsten for clarifying that.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, yeah. I read this whole thread and I know like a million people have posted this same thing before. I'm dizzy now.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Man Custos, can't you be nice even for a little bit?

J (Jay), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I just wonder how many DMB 'Fans' will like the solo album by dave. It wont have any of the things the jock fans like about DMB. It will be mainly acoustic and introspective. We'll see how hardcore his fans are.

Devin, Wednesday, 6 August 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

how does the album go down accompanied by the sweet, sweet taste of rolphynol?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 7 August 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Come on - Dave fills a need. Jimmy Buffet will be dead soon. Lame-ass fat drunk middle-aged suburbanites need to have some fun once in a while.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 7 August 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you referring to where I broke it into two sentences 3 posts ago (when I tried to improve the sentence), or when I put the pause between "hatred of" and "the last great" (when I was isolating "the last great american band is blind")?

The latter (hence the "Haven't you ever heard of a prepositional phrase?" comment).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 August 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"Man Custos, can't you be nice even for a little bit?"

Don't do it Custos!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 7 August 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a fairly recent convert to Dave Matthews Band fandom. I seem to be the only UK based fan on this thread too. But I feel im missing out having never seen DMB live. Get your ass over to London Dave and play.
Allison (or anyone else who has seen DMB) what are they really like live? How is the live shows better than the albums?

K@te, Thursday, 7 August 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

well k@te...
it goes like this- hello (insert city)!!! we're so happy to be here we just got into town from (insert city before this one) and we hope you guys are better than them, they didn't even know how to twirl!
so, you guys ready to...(rest of sentence destroyed by crowd all wailing song names in unison)...well, alright!!!
let's start this out right! here's an oldie, it's (insert pre-1997 DMB song name) and it goes out to ...(obscurred by more roaring and the sound of beachballs bouncing).
and it basically goes on from there...
see, you didn't even hafta waste yr money?

eedd, Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't forget about the part where security harasses you at the gate...

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

tuesday night is Grope Night! Free Bunches of Gropes All 'Round!

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 7 August 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"tuesday night is Grope Night"
why do i not think this's a joke??

frat boy1 ='d00d, i'm totally feelin this hawt chick up!'
frat boy2 ='man, that's awesome, my shit's gettin felt too!'
frat boy1 ='i didn't know chick's had peni...'
frat boy2 ='d00d! that's me!!!'

oh, that's so not right...

edde, Friday, 8 August 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

why do i not think this's a joke??

oh, that's just for the folks at the door.

at DMB shows, EVERY NIGHT is GROPE NIGHT.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only been to 2 shows, but they were fucking awesome because they played mostly older tunes (I don't particularly care for their last 2 albums). I would probably go to more, but I live way back in the boonies of West Virginia, which is approximately 4 hours away from anywhere they play and I don't really like them enough to drive 8 hours in one day just to see a show.
To my dismay, the parking lot wasn't as jam-packed with inebriated frat boys as I was led to believe :(
I'm just hoping that in the solo album he implements some of the old DMB characteristics...I'm really getting tired of this commercialized shit.

Allison (Allison), Friday, 8 August 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"this commercialized shit"
DMB goes POP!!!???

eedd, Friday, 8 August 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

If DMB are POP then half of ILX will start to like them. I bet the Dave Matthews solo album sounds just like DMB without the wanky jams. Which presumably may make it more 'pop'? Will DMB fans (especially the 'jocks') like that?

Roger The Cabin Boy, Friday, 8 August 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

you understand neither pop nor dave matthews

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 8 August 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It's no question that the music has gotten progressively more pop-ish(i.e. simple riffs and lackluster lyrics) through recent years, but I think you can attribute that to his change from party boy to mature father. That's understandable...but I really hope he changes it up a little for the solo stuff.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 9 August 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

all the write ups i see keep saying stuff like "this will displease his fan base" and "it's worlds away from the DMB stuff". which, is good, and i'll give it a listen, but, i fear it'll be a bit too introspective...
supposedly, it's almost all acoustic and very "pared down".
that's all here-say and conjecture at this point.

eedd, Saturday, 9 August 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

That's all subjective to which "DMB stuff" it's different from. I know I'm all for hearing something atypical and innovative from him. I'm know he CAN do it because he's done it before...but I'm still curious to find it out if he'll venture from the predictable structure that they've adapted with the past 2 albums.
All you can do then is listen. The worst that can happen is you don't like it.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 9 August 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

DAVES ALBUM IS GONNA KICK SERIOUS ASS DUDES!!!!!!!!!!!!

ryan j harvey, Saturday, 16 August 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

okay first of this is the dumbest thing i've ever heard! stop generalizing! he isn't only good for one audience, im a huge DMB fan and I not only listen to him but metal, jazz, funk, punk, alternative ect. and I most certainly do not where a suit to work everyday because I am a musician, all of that band is very talented and have worked hard to get where they are, also dave is a great lyric writer, his love songs are awesome, and there are alot of other songs, other then crash that someone had mentioned about, that have great meaning to them, just because you think hes voice isn't that great doesn't mean you can take away from the musical talent of the band, also to get to the point of killing someone because you don't like their music is absolutely insane! grow the hell up, just because you don't like them doesn't mean that people who do are stupid to listen to them.

Linz, Saturday, 16 August 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we please forget about this thread? Forever?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 16 August 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Not until it reaches 5000 and is fed by some fish and bread

jesus, Saturday, 16 August 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I say let it starve and then crucify the carcass. If it comes back from the dead, then We'll all start posting on it again.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 16 August 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

They've been posting clips from the solo album on the official website, and I must say that so far I'm liking it a lot more than the last two. Recently, his choices of singles haven't properly denoted their collecive sound, nor have they really been any good. Gravedigger (the solo single) sounds like it could put an end to their slump, though it is a bit banal...to say the least. Just check it out, you might like the new sound.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 16 August 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe everyone should download the new Dave Matthews album from Kazaa and try it out, see what you think and everyone can post their opinions on this thread. At least you will have heard it.

Wynona & Brad, Saturday, 16 August 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

uh...no I don't think anyone will do that.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

They're music fans. Its perfectly clear they dont like to diss something they havent heard. They want to diss it , so they have to hear it 1st. But some of them may actually like it if they give it a chance. Even if it is just 1 or 2 people.

Wynona & Brad, Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

This is true, but I'm almost certain that they won't make an attempt to hear it and will still satirize them just as harshly.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of us may just want to listen to other things entirely as well...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

For us theres always room for more music.

Wynona & Brad, Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Then you try to convince this lot to listen to them. A noble goal, indeed...and I've yet to succeed.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

now that dave has listed the mighty turin brakes cd as one of his fave records of the year will they become the new dave matthews band?

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Matthews and the ICP...together again for the first time!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread is sort of a weird inverse isnt it? isnt it more typical that fans of underground and/or less popular music are trying to convince fans of popular music that techno/disco/jazz/classical/punk, etc., dont suck? i guess this was abvious all along, but for some reason, it has me laughing today.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Sunday, 17 August 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Would you really want anyone who frequents this board to hear the Dave Matthews solo album? I wouldn't. Save it for people with good taste!

Floater, Monday, 18 August 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

from a friend's email: "btw, a few weeks ago i found two dave matthews cds in my apartment and have no idea of how they got here. the worst part is, no decent store'll even buy the fuckers from me."

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 18 August 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I lived in SW Virginia for a while, and that shit was crammed down my throat for about 5 years. Thats why I hate them.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Monday, 18 August 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard the new version of "Gravedigger" many times; I was thinking about starting a thread on it. It's okay. The thing that struck me most was the orchestration in the last part of it, and how much the arrangement reminded me of Metallica's S&M album. Otherwise I'd say it's got more of a straight-ahead rock structure than his stuff with the band. I've heard a few other songs on the album but don't remember them very well. (ask me on chat about the circumstances; far to name-droppery to mention here, haha.)
