seven years pass...

wish I'd known of ILM in 2005, would've made my love of this album less confusing and lonely

swing out sister: live in new donk city (geoffreyess), Monday, 22 February 2021 16:16 (five years ago)

I've never (knowingly) heard anything from this album except for "Technologic." Seems like a good day to check it out lol

J. Sam, Monday, 22 February 2021 18:53 (five years ago)

great completely misunderstood record

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 22 February 2021 19:01 (five years ago)

WOW The Prime Time of Your Life GOES. The way it keeps speeding up I feel like I've just railed two full grams of blow. I think I love this album already

J. Sam, Monday, 22 February 2021 19:01 (five years ago)

Ok Robot Rock, I see why people rag on this record for being repetitive, but it seems like the absolute right choice for music this loud and scuzzy

J. Sam, Monday, 22 February 2021 19:05 (five years ago)

it's fun!!! BOW bunananana

Yes! I really really love this. So elegant. Just that primitive drum machine, piano(!), a lil palm-muted guitar, and a lonely vocoded robot crooning off in the distance.

Yes. I love it. Crazy that it took Daft Punk breaking up to get me to listen to this album. Thanks, robots. Wishing you all the best in your future endeavors.

J. Sam, Monday, 22 February 2021 19:44 (five years ago)

it was really funny how this album leaked a year in advance and pretty much everyone assumed it was fake

frogbs, Monday, 22 February 2021 20:25 (five years ago)

I’m not crazy about this album but it’s much better than that not dissimilar Ed banger/justice/digitalism crap that was going on

brimstead, Monday, 22 February 2021 20:44 (five years ago)

Justice was the worst

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Monday, 22 February 2021 20:44 (five years ago)

"it was really funny how this album leaked a year in advance and pretty much everyone assumed it was fake"

LOL, I had forgotten about this. The reaction was almost uniformly negative but they didn't change anything.

This can't be right. Why would they have recorded it in just a few weeks (and it sounded like it) just to sit on it for over a year?

nashwan, Tuesday, 23 February 2021 13:25 (five years ago)

Yeah, I don't recall it leaking a year in advance. It only leaked like a month or two in advance, as was common at the time.

But he is right on a lot of people thinking the leak was fake. The fact that P2P networks were full of fake versions of Discovery tracks where parts just looped over and over again didn't help either.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 23 February 2021 13:32 (five years ago)

Also this is kinda shown in this very topic, where things were leaked around the time I remember them being leaked.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 23 February 2021 13:45 (five years ago)

fake versions of Discovery tracks where parts just looped over and over again

hard to tell the difference tbf

eisimpleir (crüt), Tuesday, 23 February 2021 14:32 (five years ago)

Well you can tell something is wrong with your version of Harder Faster Better Stronger if it never gets to the fun breakdown sections which are the best part.

https://hasitleaked.com/articles/memorable-and-odd-album-leaks/

The hugely anticipated follow up to the French electro duo’s masterpiece Discovery leaked months ahead of its intended release. Daft Punk has been subject to fake album leaks throughout their releases, the most memorable being the numerous fake Tron soundtrack leaks. Interestingly enough, some of those leaks, although fake, were pretty impressive. The problem with the Human After All album leak was that a lot of fans thought it was fake due to the fact that it wasn’t up to the same quality as Daft Punk’s previous releases. As a reviewer from Sputnik put it:

“Most fans did not believe that it was actually Human After All, many fans warned others not to download the leak because it was a fake. They proclaimed it sounded too cheap and dirty to be the real thing, and that the sound just did not fit Daft Punk at all. Little did they know, they were listening to the real thing.”

groovypanda, Tuesday, 23 February 2021 15:00 (five years ago)

IIRC this very thread has a lot of people saying it must be fake and waiting for the "real" album to drop?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 23 February 2021 15:09 (five years ago)

Album is front-loaded to fuck. Love the first three tracks but there are some draggy, too long songs on here that don't really do anything much. The overall sound is very hot and compressed. It works in certain situations (title track), others it's just a bit "ecchhh was this a mistake or done on purpose"? I know they used a lot of guitar effects and stuff on these tunes, and you can tell - it's got a gritty, overdriven vibe that sort-of works, but sort-of doesn't.

Too many tracks have potential but sound unfinished. Some might like the unfussy, unpolished approach, but compared to the perfection of Discovery, there's a tossed-off feel to a lot of these.

"Steam Machine" is ploddy and boring.
"Make Love" is pretty but sounds like a stripped-down off-cut from Discovery.
"The Brainwasher" is Black Sabbath's 'Iron Man' played on an Atari DOS Tracker and again doesn't do enough in its 4 minute run.
"On/Off" completely pointless, even as a filler track.
"Television Rules The Nation" isn't bad, but we didn't need a song about TV being the opiate of the masses even back in 2005. "Technologic" sounds like it was written especially for a TV ad, and I'm pretty sure it was (but the Basement Jaxx version is AMAAAAAZING).
"Emotion" is okay but like "Too Long", it's too long and the hot, over-compressed fuzziness doesn't suit the vibe.

Robot Rock though... absolute smasher. BOW bunananana indeed

Party With A Jagger Ban (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 February 2021 15:29 (five years ago)

Don't remember thinking the HAA leaks were fake, but I did think we would see less distorted audio on the actual release, given the pristine sound of the first two albums

Vinnie, Tuesday, 23 February 2021 15:37 (five years ago)

This anticipated blog house to a tee, kind of wild

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 23 February 2021 15:40 (five years ago)

i mean, over-compressed mastering was becoming an issue by then anyway, but this is an artistic choice rather than a production decision. it's really hard to tame guitar distortion at the best of times, but seeing as it's guitars it doesn't usually matter. putting an analogue synth through digital guitar fx (which it sounds like they're doing here) gives it that sparky, overloaded sound. i think that's what this album makes me think of: a dicey power socket you're not sure if it's safe to plug the TV into. it skirts between illicit danger and the potential of a nasty shock.

Party With A Jagger Ban (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 February 2021 15:59 (five years ago)

Not sure if this was already posted re mastering

My one .@DaftPunk_Music anecdote is really a chance for me to share one about the late, great Nilesh Patel at The Exchange, who was always a joy to work with.

Too many tracks have potential but sound unfinished

the idea that this album was lazy or rushed or unfinished pops up over and over again throughout this thread and it strikes me as as stupid now as it did at that time

turns out everyone was projecting a maximum understanding of 'effort' in the first place

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 23 February 2021 18:54 (five years ago)

Yes but Homework was far far more interesting in its minimalism than Human After All, imho their most boring work. It makes up for that with catchiness, but ... it's boring. If they truly wanted to make a statement and make these tracks less boring than they should have been half the length. By far the best presentation of the material from this album was in Alive 2007, which appropriately combines the hooks here with mutation and mashups with their other singles and it's perfection. This is the ultimate "phoned it in" album, and most of the comments I see here defending it simply just wave the criticisms away magically with a subjective rose colored nostalgic lenses and condescending words like "stupid". They are valid criticisms.

octobeard, Tuesday, 23 February 2021 19:17 (five years ago)

"make love"... "the brainwasher"... boring? okidoke

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 February 2021 19:19 (five years ago)

That's basically the two least boring songs on the album, which are still less dynamic than most anything on their previous two. Let's talk about how many are boring as well!

octobeard, Tuesday, 23 February 2021 19:20 (five years ago)

i do not view this record through a lens of nostalgia btw

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 February 2021 19:21 (five years ago)

Daft Punk minimalism done to perfect: Superheroes, Alive. Both those tracks >>>>>>>>>> any song on this album imho
