the sound on this record is actually kind of great, actually. It has a miles-deep quality with lots of stuff in the background.

Dan S, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

sorry, two actuallies ;)

Dan S, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

wow, 8th rate K records toss-off is now the rage?

hahahah like k records ever put out anything original enough that something could be a "k records toss-off." what makes the song special is mostly his voice, imo

een, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:24 (sixteen years ago)

when did "special" become a pejorative

struck through in my prime (HI DERE), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

k records put out lots of special original records

that sex version of "blue thunder." (Mr. Que), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

der hurr hurr

een, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

K was capable of being the best or worst label ever depending on the band (and there were plenty of terrible K releases, most of them Calvin-related).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

I would smash the bassist from the Thermals. And they put on a good live show. That is the extent of my thoughts on the Thermals.

tza nicholas ii (The Reverend), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:26 (sixteen years ago)

pretty new, i was here for nominations but didn't take part, hope it's okay to comment so much.

that's just it, i HATED all that K Records crap (with a couple exceptions) so that's my sentiment behind my original statement... there was no defense implied, sorry if it came off that way.

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:27 (sixteen years ago)

the girls record doesn't offend me or excite me, it just kind of sits there. (his voice doesn't annoy me as much as ezra koenig's, say, but we all have our own meters for when indie intolerableness enters the red zone.)

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:27 (sixteen years ago)

this girls things is really bad

tza nicholas ii (The Reverend), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

oh sorry misinterpreted that. and yeah i never even made it all the way through the girls album but i like that song and "hellhole ratrace" a lot. *shrug

een, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, this is basically the 2009 version Dodgy, isn't it?

struck through in my prime (HI DERE), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:31 (sixteen years ago)

lol at nobody defending this

tza nicholas ii (The Reverend), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:33 (sixteen years ago)

It's okay.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

i can't remember if i voted for lust for life, but i do like it. the album as a whole is pretty meh, and it took me a while to even give them a chance after seeing them as openers and being bored to tears, but that song does it for me.

kaygee, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:38 (sixteen years ago)

i like the girls record ok, but I'm a bit puzzled at how highly its been rated. Call it the Fleet Foxes (or x indie band of year ____) syndrome.

ron paul revulvalution (Pillbox), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:39 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i can't really see a reason for their success other than a good biography

kaygee, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:39 (sixteen years ago)

this though: (8 in P&J, 9 in p4k)

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:40 (sixteen years ago)

I suppose I should feel happy for you that something this wretched and pitiful and totally lacking in any sort of redeeming quality brings you joy but really all I can imagine is the Manson family tearing these douchebags to shreds with their bare hands while thousands of children cheer them on.

Ha, did you know that the dude from Girls grew up in a religious cult?

Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:40 (sixteen years ago)

I guess his voice is an aquired taste, but it has so much resonance. It feels like a lot more is communicated in the songs than the words would suggest.
The more I listen to this record the more it grows on me.

Dan S, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:44 (sixteen years ago)

Don't hate it as much as the haters in this thread do, but I was expecting an Iggy Pop cover!

free rental car and sushi with my girl at 7 (KMS), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:45 (sixteen years ago)

I don't hate it for what it isn't (a song I'd like, for instance), but for what it is (a lot of nothing).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:47 (sixteen years ago)

Can we have #22 now?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:48 (sixteen years ago)

wow that song is really just... boring!

Clay, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:49 (sixteen years ago)

If you really like the band Girls, I really, really think you should check out The Summer Hits:

What about the Summer Hits!?!

They had a couple of goofy lo-fi "druggy" pop songs that this song essentially apes.

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

YES! I actually hated this song for months until one day it forced me to like it. This song is a bully.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

I was getting to know the Royksopp & Robyn one at the top of the page instead of Girls - it's really excellent, quite a lot of Depeche and New Order in there but a lot more dynamic.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

Oh man i didnt think it would be possible to hear something worse than lady gaga, the xx or fever ray but this is fucking awful. It's something that should bring the Alex In NYC out in everyone.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

(that was for girls)

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

re: Blame It... You can hear it 2x and it's done. one trick pony.

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

that's so ridiculously wrong

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:53 (sixteen years ago)

stfu girls @ #2 on jizz pap ballot... u are deaf obvs.

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:54 (sixteen years ago)

opposite for me...didn't really love it at first but after a few listens I was converted for life

musically, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:54 (sixteen years ago)

"blame it" is my favorite pop song of the past few years easily -- it's such a great song lyrically, flows so well - the chorus has a gimmicky catchy part as well as equally catchy couplets -- from a production standpoint i think it shamed just about everything else on pop radio this year

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:55 (sixteen years ago)

(omg @ ron howard btw... vid is funny)

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:55 (sixteen years ago)

shasta, you voted for "tik tok" in that other poll

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:56 (sixteen years ago)

FITE

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

but seriously re: blame it, i didn't know that a vocoder could work if you can only sing one note...

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:59 (sixteen years ago)

i'd honestly like to see a chart of his range on this song...

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 January 2010 23:00 (sixteen years ago)

tik tok fucking SLAYS this song for reals.

btw sarge, my #2 was "freaxxx" so don't even trip.

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 January 2010 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

tik tok fucking SLAYS this song for reals.

iawtc (even if I do like Blame It...)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 January 2010 23:02 (sixteen years ago)

shoulda voted for aidy's girl iirc

plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 29 January 2010 23:04 (sixteen years ago)

i think the autotune is mildly fresh in this context because the beat is also so slurry and whiny -- if you'll allow me, i think the song is very aqueous, it's like an ice luge of vodka as a song so it really works thematically & stylistically on a higher level than a lot of it's pop contemporaries this year -- also "fill another cup up/ feelin on your butt, what"

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Friday, 29 January 2010 23:05 (sixteen years ago)

a a-a-a a-alcohol

tza nicholas ii (The Reverend), Friday, 29 January 2010 23:06 (sixteen years ago)

FYI: that's a vocoder, son. i hate when people say "autotune" when they mean vocoder.
