For a minute in 09, this song had me randomly inserting the word "click" into phrases.

ron paul revulvalution (Pillbox), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

no it really suffers by comparison to "back that azz up" which is funky as hell. this is more jump up and down and shout the hook type dealie, but doesn't compare well with classic stuff in that cat. either, like MOP or Onyx say (not that MOP had mad hits, or not that i particularly like Onyx personally). the best comparison is prolly the obv one, "party like a rockstar".

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

dude onyx made possibly the 13th best rap single of the 90s and should be seen as legends for it alone

brrrrrrrrrrrrrt_stanton (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:21 (sixteen years ago)

looool yeah yeah at least i said they were recognized as classic, just not favorites of mine sorry!

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

one of my favorite aggro raps of the year was "O Let's Do It" which was a minor hit despite not having the veneer of inclusive fun Wasted has, with that darkly insistent hook it slays me

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

ok but any excuse to post onyx bangers

brrrrrrrrrrrrrt_stanton (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:27 (sixteen years ago)

man, comparing it to "party like a rockstar" is selling it short as hell (whiteboy fetishizing in the video excepted). the "party like a rockstar" chorus is just them repeating the title over and over, whereas "wasted" -- as is the norm for tons of gucci songs -- has a chorus that is as wordy as it is catchy, and is inventive because of that. i think it has a facade of being dumbed down when really the chorus alone is as lyrical as any verse that was on rap radio this year. and obv the verses in "party like a rockstar" aren't even comparable to those in "wasted"

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:27 (sixteen years ago)

and i like "wasted" as much as "ante up", for the record

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:27 (sixteen years ago)

ok that last part is kinda crazy

"Wasted" was a top notch '09 southern rap radio hit but i dunno if it could really compete w/ anything of comparable stature pre-'08

some dude, Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:29 (sixteen years ago)

oooh, the FloMac/xx joint is great. I need to track it down.

tza nicholas ii (The Reverend), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:29 (sixteen years ago)

They play Gucci Mane on the radio?

Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:30 (sixteen years ago)

I was kind of shocked because they played a Gucci Mane track on Boston radio the other day! I was all "wait, waht" right up until my wife changed the channel because she hated it.

struck through in my prime (HI DERE), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:31 (sixteen years ago)

"wasted" was a huge rap/r&b radio hit

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i accept that (selling it short) but you did use anthemic and wide-appeal sloganeering as why you think it might be a better pick than lemonade so i was probably coming from there more than a little bit

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:33 (sixteen years ago)

"Wasted" is fun but it ain't no "Back That Azz Up" or "Ante Up", that's for sure

one of my favorite aggro raps of the year was "O Let's Do It" which was a minor hit despite not having the veneer of inclusive fun Wasted has, with that darkly insistent hook it slays me

― zvookster, Thursday, January 28, 2010 1:26 PM Bookmark

I started chanting "O Let's Do It" when I was drunk wasted at a party the other night and no one had any idea what I was on about. :(

tza nicholas ii (The Reverend), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:33 (sixteen years ago)

"Wasted" being a huge r&b/rap radio hit seems very geographically dependent. As I've said before, neither of the rap/r&b stations in the cities I've lived in while it was a hit picked up on it.

tza nicholas ii (The Reverend), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

maybe you were chanting it wrong (i.e. pronouncing the consonants) and they didn't recognize it (xpost)

some dude, Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

"'oh let's do it?'...OH! he means 'olé dewey'!"

some dude, Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:36 (sixteen years ago)

ha

tza nicholas ii (The Reverend), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:37 (sixteen years ago)

Ante Up >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Most rap singles/Wasted > Back That Azz Up

brrrrrrrrrrrrrt_stanton (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:38 (sixteen years ago)

man that's just crazy talk

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:46 (sixteen years ago)

ante up = back that azz up >>>> most rap singles = wasted

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:47 (sixteen years ago)

tho i might put last days above that whole fray

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

lol @ me reading "Ante Up" and thinking "Party Up" for far too long

3 #1 votes!

Not brilliant, but nice enough (lou), Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

through the first third of the year it was pretty much no 1 - i voted trax unranked though

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

as for "wasted" it's not a gucci song i ever really think about, i don't get to experience it on the radio and it's weird that plies is the main attraction. i guess it's pretty fun though.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:05 (sixteen years ago)

this keeps getting better and better tbh

samosa gibreel, Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:27 (sixteen years ago)

ikr - 16 down, and i actively like 12 of them.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

I heard "Kiss Me Thru The Phone" is the #1.

Captain Ahab, Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:31 (sixteen years ago)

i'd like to hear this with a vocal, whether dancehall or house diva. not really feeling the autotuned dude lex linked. youtube has sean paul freestyle his singsong uptown thing over it on kiss fm in the uk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emKzeDqi7g4

any others?

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:38 (sixteen years ago)

ack sorry didn't mean to embed

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:38 (sixteen years ago)

I'll leave it to deej to let me know if Gucci is played on Power 92 -- I only listen to the Top 40 stations, and he's not played on those.

Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:46 (sixteen years ago)

34 -- Washed Out - Feel It All Around (10 votes, 106 points) (44 in P&J, 10 in p4k)

Air meets 10cc in a dance production = great+ a future "best new music" in pfrk.

what else can you ask for? ― Zeno

awesome song

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

I'm really kind of blown away by how many of these I like!

Enoki Doki (Paul in Santa Cruz), Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:53 (sixteen years ago)

I agree it's a really good list up to this point. re: Washed Out -- he seems to be the lead dog in this whole subgenre, and it's not by chance. He does more with the same components than people like Neon Indian or Toro y Moi or Ducktails or whoever else. I hope when he finally make a proper album, he still writes the same way but increases the fidelity a little bit.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:56 (sixteen years ago)

make=makes

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:56 (sixteen years ago)

i know i was listening to lots of old music, but this list makes me feel like i just missed 2k9 tbh

plaxico (I know, right?), Thursday, 28 January 2010 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

I suspect the whole Washed Out album is good, if I was more familiar with it I think it would have made my album ballot.

sleeve, Thursday, 28 January 2010 23:00 (sixteen years ago)

It was actually two separate EP's, wasn't it? iirc the EP this was on, "Life Of Leisure" was the better of the two.

Plax tell me about Henry Purcell.

Captain Ahab, Thursday, 28 January 2010 23:03 (sixteen years ago)

Washed Out song is cool. So far the only thing I actively dislike is AC.
