For a minute in 09, this song had me randomly inserting the word "click" into phrases.

no it really suffers by comparison to "back that azz up" which is funky as hell. this is more jump up and down and shout the hook type dealie, but doesn't compare well with classic stuff in that cat. either, like MOP or Onyx say (not that MOP had mad hits, or not that i particularly like Onyx personally). the best comparison is prolly the obv one, "party like a rockstar".

one of my favorite aggro raps of the year was "O Let's Do It" which was a minor hit despite not having the veneer of inclusive fun Wasted has, with that darkly insistent hook it slays me

man, comparing it to "party like a rockstar" is selling it short as hell (whiteboy fetishizing in the video excepted). the "party like a rockstar" chorus is just them repeating the title over and over, whereas "wasted" -- as is the norm for tons of gucci songs -- has a chorus that is as wordy as it is catchy, and is inventive because of that. i think it has a facade of being dumbed down when really the chorus alone is as lyrical as any verse that was on rap radio this year. and obv the verses in "party like a rockstar" aren't even comparable to those in "wasted"

and i like "wasted" as much as "ante up", for the record

"Wasted" was a top notch '09 southern rap radio hit but i dunno if it could really compete w/ anything of comparable stature pre-'08

I was kind of shocked because they played a Gucci Mane track on Boston radio the other day! I was all "wait, waht" right up until my wife changed the channel because she hated it.

I started chanting "O Let's Do It" when I was drunk wasted at a party the other night and no one had any idea what I was on about. :(

"Wasted" being a huge r&b/rap radio hit seems very geographically dependent. As I've said before, neither of the rap/r&b stations in the cities I've lived in while it was a hit picked up on it.

maybe you were chanting it wrong (i.e. pronouncing the consonants) and they didn't recognize it (xpost)

as for "wasted" it's not a gucci song i ever really think about, i don't get to experience it on the radio and it's weird that plies is the main attraction. i guess it's pretty fun though.

I agree it's a really good list up to this point. re: Washed Out -- he seems to be the lead dog in this whole subgenre, and it's not by chance. He does more with the same components than people like Neon Indian or Toro y Moi or Ducktails or whoever else. I hope when he finally make a proper album, he still writes the same way but increases the fidelity a little bit.

It was actually two separate EP's, wasn't it? iirc the EP this was on, "Life Of Leisure" was the better of the two.
