OK, now my innocence has been completely shattered.

ron paul revulvalution (Pillbox), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:49 (sixteen years ago)

"when i grow up" is actually far far more of an odd choice a) as a single b) as an individual track to vote for than "if i had a heart" -

I would reverse these. "When I Grow Up" is easily my favorite track on the album, while "If I Had a Heart" mostly just sounds like a warm-up/intro to me. I listen to the former by itself all the time.

Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:58 (sixteen years ago)

agreed^ "if i had a heart" is great for setting the atmosphere of the album, but as far as being an actual song it seems really slight. someone said upthread that it was by far their favorite song on the album and i'm just like O_o are we listening to the same album?

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 28 January 2010 18:04 (sixteen years ago)

i got to love "if i had a heart" as an individual track b/c i had to, before the album was released; it's popped up in a few dj mixes too (notably dixon's excellent temporary secretary) and its steady pulse means it works really well there. also, it's secretly very catchy indeed (which "when i grow up" isn't, at all, for me).

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 January 2010 18:07 (sixteen years ago)

that's true, it works surprisingly well on that dixon mix, sped up a little; though it does play a similar role as an atmospheric tone-setter

since I don't know that song I now have "When I Grow Up" by the Pussycat Dolls in my head, thanks a lot you fucking guys

this one had the lowest average vote:

38 -- Florence & the Machine - You Got the Love (Jamie xx Re-Work) (12 votes, 101.5 points) (DNP in P&J, DNP in p4k)

Their remix of Florence and the Machine's "You've Got The Love" is astonishing, one of my favourite things of this year. ― Tim F

It's really annoying me trying to figure out what other rap song features the same sample as Shine Blockas. I'm sure its a song I've heard millions of times, I just can't seem to remember and it is bugging the hell out of me. I'm thinking Kanye but that can't be right. Anyone wanna help?

brrrrrrrrrrrrrt_stanton (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 28 January 2010 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

so does that mean the original florence cover didn't get any votes? (which is how it should be.)

(xp)

First one I voted for - didn't save my ballot, but pretty sure I put it in the appropriate 18th or 19th place.

Yeah, I keep wishing they'd recorded that, decided that they didn't want to put out under a "Florence & The Machine" banner and just released it - rightfully - as The XX's "You Got The Love"

THIS CAN'T BE LIFE! omg thank you! that was annoying me so much. Scarface verse slays me.

i'm liking the way this is shaping up, so far i like every single song.

samosa gibreel, Thursday, 28 January 2010 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

there better be like 3 Gucci songs and 10 other rap songs in the top 40, or this list is as lame w/r/t hip hop as PF and P&J

― Dr. Algernod Goon (some dude), Thursday, 28 January 2010 11:50 (2 hours ago) Bookmark

i voted for "wasted" and "lemonade" which i figure both have a good chance of charting. not sure what else would attract tonnes of votes, maybe "first day out" or "dope boys." was the h.a.t.e.u remix nominated? it's not likely it would end up above shine blockas, but it's just as good.

good song but gucci has >20 better songs from last year, and a couple better singles. don't have a problem w/ it placing tho - it was by far his biggest

max ipad (k3vin k.), Thursday, 28 January 2010 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

ha i was really convinced that no other gucci was gonna make the list

pretty rad

i could buy that he has 20 better verses but definitely not 20 better songs, and certainly not better singles. it felt like an instant classic to me because the chorus is so anthemic. "lemonade" is great but it doesn't have the wide-appeal sloganeering of "party, party, party let's all get wasted"

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 January 2010 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

we don't get Z S drunk no more, we get wasted

Dr. Algernod Goon (some dude), Thursday, 28 January 2010 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

more a dumb frat boy novelty hit than an instant classic. plies kind of saves it though, coming in with a different energy.

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

i think it's as instant classic -- and as much in the territory of frat boy novelty hit -- as "back that azz up". and yeah plies is perfect for the song -- pretty sure i've said this elsewhere but his slurry droopy-eyed thing works just right on "wasted" -- it's weird that he's actually essential on something. also it's lol @ how repudiated oj da juiceman was by the listening public once the label tried to push the version w/ him

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:04 (sixteen years ago)

plies is perfect for every song now, come on

For a minute in 09, this song had me randomly inserting the word "click" into phrases.

ron paul revulvalution (Pillbox), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

no it really suffers by comparison to "back that azz up" which is funky as hell. this is more jump up and down and shout the hook type dealie, but doesn't compare well with classic stuff in that cat. either, like MOP or Onyx say (not that MOP had mad hits, or not that i particularly like Onyx personally). the best comparison is prolly the obv one, "party like a rockstar".

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

dude onyx made possibly the 13th best rap single of the 90s and should be seen as legends for it alone

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1ThxWzkELk

brrrrrrrrrrrrrt_stanton (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:21 (sixteen years ago)

looool yeah yeah at least i said they were recognized as classic, just not favorites of mine sorry!

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

one of my favorite aggro raps of the year was "O Let's Do It" which was a minor hit despite not having the veneer of inclusive fun Wasted has, with that darkly insistent hook it slays me

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

ok but any excuse to post onyx bangers

brrrrrrrrrrrrrt_stanton (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:27 (sixteen years ago)

man, comparing it to "party like a rockstar" is selling it short as hell (whiteboy fetishizing in the video excepted). the "party like a rockstar" chorus is just them repeating the title over and over, whereas "wasted" -- as is the norm for tons of gucci songs -- has a chorus that is as wordy as it is catchy, and is inventive because of that. i think it has a facade of being dumbed down when really the chorus alone is as lyrical as any verse that was on rap radio this year. and obv the verses in "party like a rockstar" aren't even comparable to those in "wasted"

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:27 (sixteen years ago)

and i like "wasted" as much as "ante up", for the record

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 January 2010 21:27 (sixteen years ago)
