shine blockas i mean

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:50 (fourteen years ago) link

there better be like 3 Gucci songs and 10 other rap songs in the top 40, or this list is as lame w/r/t hip hop as PF and P&J

Dr. Algernod Goon (some dude), Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:50 (fourteen years ago) link

shine blockas is a great song but did not end up voting for it. pretty good placement, the other two polls overrated it imo

xp al otm

max ipad (k3vin k.), Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:51 (fourteen years ago) link

This list already has like twice as many hip-hop songs as the ones from the last couple years, I *think*? Don't quote me on that.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, and the first time response -

40 (Big Boi) - Not unpleasant on the ears. Kinda don't remember it now that it's over, will give it another spin later in the day and see if it's a grower.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:52 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean tho dude tbh i only voted for 3 or 4 rap songs...one of my criteria was how often i hear the song on the radio and not having rap radio well....i'm not voting hova

xp

max ipad (k3vin k.), Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:53 (fourteen years ago) link

easy to see why trap goin ham vid could be depressing, surely? but in the track there's also exhilaration in the craziness which counters that.

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Shine Blockas should be #1. Sad thing is, I have never heard it on the R&B/Hip Hop radio station here. What a fuckin jam. I would have loved to hear it over and over again in my car. Instead I get "Bedrock".

Captain Ahab, Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:54 (fourteen years ago) link

there better be like 3 Gucci songs - the problem w/ Gucci is that ppls votes will be spread among the various tracks. I mean, dude released 7 singles in 09. "Wasted" is sure to be up there, at any rate.

ron paul revulvalution (Pillbox), Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:56 (fourteen years ago) link

^i think the same thing, it's anthemic the way certain mid-00's hip hop songs are imo. it took a few months for it to click for me though tbh. 1st of my votes to show up. xp

johnny crunch, Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:58 (fourteen years ago) link

"Shine Blockas" hasn't got even enough of a flicker of airplay to get into the top 100 of the Billboard R&B chart. i'm not even sure the label is pushing it as an official single.

xpost -- yeah but even vote-splitting aside, "Lemonade" deserves votes so much more and I don't expect to see that here

Dr. Algernod Goon (some dude), Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:59 (fourteen years ago) link

i voted for "lemonade"

max ipad (k3vin k.), Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:59 (fourteen years ago) link

i get the pill = depressing thing, that's part and parcel of the whole "gritty street life" angle he works so well (and he makes it a lot more explicit on some of his other tracks), though it's not JUST depressing by any means

"shine blockas" is excellent, and it's great to hear gucci mane in such a different context than usual, but it's just nowhere near my FAVOURITE rap tracks of the year or something i'd consider voting for.

can't remember if i voted for a gucci track or just the mixtape but if i had it would've been "my shadow"

aw don't spoil the suspense by telling what yr votes were plz

Trap goin Ham (for the uninitiated):

trap house - Term used to define a crack house, or the surroundings in which a drug dealer or(trap star) would use to make their profit.

ham - When a person is unstoppable or just in the zone in any type sport or competition setting; It can also be defined as going crazy and buying up everything in a store; or even doing something beast like

So much for selling yams & pies then..

ron paul revulvalution (Pillbox), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:03 (fourteen years ago) link

actually relistening, i can really see how "shine blockas" would only be improved by hearing it in public, on the radio &c - that piano and that descending bass are pretty perfect and the chorus just rollllls out like a red carpet

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:04 (fourteen years ago) link

Thanks for the facts, Pillbox!

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Shine Blockas and TGH coming so low makes me think that this poll isn't going to be very rap heavy. Can't exactly see anything other than Gucci/9x/10 coming higher than them. Was hoping for Glass low, TGH high.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrt_stanton (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:09 (fourteen years ago) link

cheers for doing this musically

ron paul revulvalution (Pillbox), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:14 (fourteen years ago) link

yes, thanks!

Dan S, Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:15 (fourteen years ago) link

rap tracks that I could see making the poll: Empire State of Mind, Wasted, 9X Outta 10, Best I Ever Had, House of Flying Daggers

nominated tracks that probably won't make it but are as deserving as any of the above: Lemonade, Mafia Music, Swag Surfin, Who Dat, Every Girl, Renaissance Rap (remix), You're A Jerk, Cold Summer, Turn My Swag On

Dr. Algernod Goon (some dude), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:17 (fourteen years ago) link

surely there's enough of a jerk posse to get a couple of placings there? unless the vote was split :(

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:20 (fourteen years ago) link

pink dollaz - "pockets never hungry" was dope and on the nomination list

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:22 (fourteen years ago) link

if u like shina blockas make sure you google for the other big boi track from last year 'fo yo sorrows'

david cam'ron (tpp), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:23 (fourteen years ago) link

i can't see anything besides maybe "you're a jerk" having a profile high enough to get >10 votes

Dr. Algernod Goon (some dude), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:25 (fourteen years ago) link

if 'empire state of mind' makes this poll i mite suggest ban myself

david cam'ron (tpp), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:26 (fourteen years ago) link

btw I lied, there are two artists that double-dipped in the 40-31

39 -- Fever Ray - When I Grow Up (1 vote, 10.5 points for D. Lissvik Remix) (9 votes, 101.5 points) (97 in P&J, 36 in p4k)

"when i grow up" is actually far far more of an odd choice a) as a single b) as an individual track to vote for than "if i had a heart" - i pretty much only listen to it in the context of the album, and it's great but not a highlight. loved the lissvik remix on first hearing but it's more of a curiosity innit, has nothing on the banging martyn remix of "seven"

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:29 (fourteen years ago) link

fo yo sorrows was even better than shine blockas imo but less universal appeal

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Nice! The first of my voets to appear. <3<3 this track, tho still I wish I could have voted for "Concrete Walls" (which is my favorite track from the FR album).

ron paul revulvalution (Pillbox), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:31 (fourteen years ago) link

lmao at the fever ray vid. what's going on there? is she some sort of witch or shaman in sneakers?

zvookster, Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:36 (fourteen years ago) link

liking that D. Lissvik Remix of Fever Ray - hadn't heard it before. I guessing there will be at least a couple more Fever Tracks in the rest of the results.

and echoing others, THKS muscially. really enjoying the countdown.

"when i grow up" is actually far far more of an odd choice a) as a single b) as an individual track to vote for than "if i had a heart" -

I would reverse these. "When I Grow Up" is easily my favorite track on the album, while "If I Had a Heart" mostly just sounds like a warm-up/intro to me. I listen to the former by itself all the time.

Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Thursday, 28 January 2010 17:58 (fourteen years ago) link

agreed^ "if i had a heart" is great for setting the atmosphere of the album, but as far as being an actual song it seems really slight. someone said upthread that it was by far their favorite song on the album and i'm just like O_o are we listening to the same album?

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 28 January 2010 18:04 (fourteen years ago) link

i got to love "if i had a heart" as an individual track b/c i had to, before the album was released; it's popped up in a few dj mixes too (notably dixon's excellent temporary secretary) and its steady pulse means it works really well there. also, it's secretly very catchy indeed (which "when i grow up" isn't, at all, for me).

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 January 2010 18:07 (fourteen years ago) link

that's true, it works surprisingly well on that dixon mix, sped up a little; though it does play a similar role as an atmospheric tone-setter

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 28 January 2010 18:09 (fourteen years ago) link

since I don't know that song I now have "When I Grow Up" by the Pussycat Dolls in my head, thanks a lot you fucking guys

this one had the lowest average vote:

38 -- Florence & the Machine - You Got the Love (Jamie xx Re-Work) (12 votes, 101.5 points) (DNP in P&J, DNP in p4k)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1UiFU-K1dQ

Their remix of Florence and the Machine's "You've Got The Love" is astonishing, one of my favourite things of this year. ― Tim F

It's really annoying me trying to figure out what other rap song features the same sample as Shine Blockas. I'm sure its a song I've heard millions of times, I just can't seem to remember and it is bugging the hell out of me. I'm thinking Kanye but that can't be right. Anyone wanna help?

brrrrrrrrrrrrrt_stanton (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 28 January 2010 18:34 (fourteen years ago) link

so does that mean the original florence cover didn't get any votes? (which is how it should be.)

First one I voted for - didn't save my ballot, but pretty sure I put it in the appropriate 18th or 19th place.

Yeah, I keep wishing they'd recorded that, decided that they didn't want to put out under a "Florence & The Machine" banner and just released it - rightfully - as The XX's "You Got The Love"
