Rolling "Should I see this DJ?" Thread

funny living in berlin, it all becomes so passe... so much happens here it's impossible to get excited about even 1/10th of it, and shows that i would have jumped up and down at finding out about 3 years ago, these days i'm like "yeah it's only 5 subway stations away but i'm kinda tired" a lot of it is just me having checked out so much good stuff already and like, how many transcendent narcotic experiences on the dance floor can you have before it gets redundant? it's easy to go from all night club to all day afterhour to club again and stay out for 2 weeks while you completely lose touch with reality here, but now it feels like going through the motion for me. and i'd rather geek out in the studio and watch a movie with my girl...

with that said, Transmediale is under way, and i'll be seeing Charlemagne Palestine, Thomas Köner, Pan Sonic, Ryoji Ikeda, Brackles, Rustie, Deadbeat, Tikiman, ATOM tm. :)

What's a Joey Beltram DJ set like these days? He doesn't try to keep up with what the kids like too much, does he? I don't really want that

i'm a fan but what type of stuff does he play out? is it worth the $20?? (fwiw i am a huge fan of 'temporary secretary' and his RA mix and 'the grandfather paradox', just wondering how well that style translates to a live dj set)

He was very good when I say him in Berlin, played a very broad range of house for about 6 or 7 hours - and we were grinning from ear to ear when he dropped West End Girls towards the end.

i saw him w/ame a while back and while i don't remember too well what he played, i thought he was very good. seeing him tonight with seth troxler!

saw him in indonesia and he played obvious predictable hits! it's because of the uneducated crowd, though.

saw horse meat disco last night and i can only say it was tiring. played too many obvious tracks and the flow just wasn't errrmm flowing.

Saw Pete Herbert a couple of weeks back. He played plenty of deep discoy records (not a good descrip, sorry). He played Simian Mobile Disco's Cruel Intentions.

I saw him for ten minutes in a garden the other week, not enough to really make a judgment on

Pole last night: very nice, very nice (didn't hurt that the sound was also very nice), but it was Barbara Preisinger's set after that really shook up my soda, so to speak.

I'm just basing this on FdHC's music, and from what I can tell his tastes, if that's your thing he might be great, for all I know, he's definitely not my cup of tea, though.

I saw Felix DJ Centro-Fly during the height of Electroclash. It was pretty awesome. He played Our Darkness...

Felix's mix with Diddy last year was pretty incessantly banging. If that's his DJing style these days don't expect much downtime.

Above and Beyond are Paul Van Dyk with less cred. If that is hard to get your head around you should watch their NYE 2007 show in Rio on Youtube. I'm pretty sure I've seen Spirit Catcher but I couldn't tell you if they are any good.

the latter. joris voorn is kind of a bore live, imo.

also, just a note: i didn't get to see Matias Aguayo that night in march. i was about to head over to the club when i got a call saying my house had been robbed. apparently, it was fucking awesome.

Ben UFO was disappointing. I didn't come to see a one dimensional techno DJ and that's what I got.

xp I've seen Ben UFO three times and it's been completely different each time - a boring time probably in that same one dimensional techno vein, a great time in the adventurous way you'd expect of him, and a really weird time when after hours of supports throwing out filthy dubstep he came on, cleared the floor with a couple of really skeletal tracks, then gave up and let someone else take over.

oh it was a few years ago, I don't really remember, but just stuff in the spare and rhythmically-oriented Hessle vibe, which didn't go down well with the teens who'd been enjoying buzzsaw synth lines.

How is Carl Craig these days?

i saw john talabot at a smaller outdoor daytime thing and he was perfect. not sure how he'd fair at indoor/at night, but i'd say go for it.

ended up seeing sven vath since I was late to see talabot. it was okay, but I didn't have any expectation anyway.

Anyone seen Ron Morelli?

I thought his set was the best at Dekmantel Festival last year. So grinding yet still danceable.

I LOVE Benoit and Sergio's original material, how are their DJ sets? Seeing them tomorrow with Eats Everything and Dusky, who I don't know and a Spotify search seems like they're a much different kind of thing...

I've seen B&S play some pretty good sets and I've seen them clear the floor with terrible sets. Eats Everything and Dusky are always fantastic, though.
