some of us are kind of retards when it comes to self-promotion. we can't seem to help ourselves because it's ingrained somehow, but we feel dirty immediately afterwards. ugh. just like that.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 15 October 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Upon re-inspection, I think this cover is so wholly, consistently awful as to constitute a great work of art.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

oh god that is wonderful, especially because i owned and loved that album when i was 13. and i'm going to have to go with kevin, the co-lead singer on the upper left. wow. wow. fucking canada.

Emily B (Emily B), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 04:21 (twenty years ago)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 08:45 (twenty years ago)

One question we haven't touched yet: who/what the hell is "Gordon"? Why are they trapped between the bars of "Gordon"? Is the Pepsi ball coming to save them from "Gordon"? Maybe not, since the guy in the red shirt seems to be shielding himself from the ball. Then again, the uppermost guy seems kinda excited about (rather than scared of) the Pepsi ball, whereas the others seem indifferent to it. Maybe the album should be called "Different Stances Towards Pepsi"... But where does "Gordon" fit in?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 08:51 (twenty years ago)

Also, both the green shirt guy and the jheru curl man seem to be making hand signs... Is that some sort of dork white-boy street code?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 08:55 (twenty years ago)

Why, "Gordon" is clearly a slice of gnomic normalcy, a name so ordinary it's funny: FEEL TEH WACKINESS.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 09:19 (twenty years ago)

Look how wacky they are! That record sleeve tells me that there is a better, more fun existence than this quotidien misery, and for just the price of a CD, i could be granted admission.

I know what I'm doing at lunchtime, and don't try and stop me.

Lee F# (fsharp), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 09:22 (twenty years ago)

yup, suicide.

Lee F# (fsharp), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 09:23 (twenty years ago)

There is so much wrong with the cover I don't even know where to begin. But the top two guys are just making stupid faces, and the bottom right two seem to be playing fake punch/fight game, which leaves the bottom left guy, who is just holding his fist over his head for no apparent reason. Not to mention that he and beret-guy have the same-y color shirt so they look like one big horrible monster.

musically (musically), Thursday, 30 March 2006 06:59 (twenty years ago)

Although I must say that Adam Duritz looks pretty ridiculous too. And random observation: the guy in the red t-shirt has a wedding ring on...sorry ladies!!!!

musically (musically), Thursday, 30 March 2006 07:04 (twenty years ago)

The thing is, they look like *actual retards.* Like the album looks like it was conceived, recorded, and designed by five people living in a group home.

Gordon picks up where the Barenaked Ladies' famous demo "The Yellow Tape" left off and moves them into majors. Their first for Reprise, this witty songbook finds the Canadian five-piece to be a clever group -- charming, but not childish, yet the Barenaked Ladies are pretty close to overstepping the boundaries of silliness. The thing that keeps them in line is their sharp harmonies. Shared vocals between guitarist Ed Robertson and Steven Page are refreshing and upbeat, especially on reworked versions of "Brian Wilson," "Be My Yoko Ono," and the eternal favorite "If I Had a $1000000 Dollars." "Hello City" and "Box Set" are slick narratives, making for album standouts with its jazz-cool blend. Other shiny moments, such as "Enid" and "Grade 9," are humorous in reflecting upon adolescence, while "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" showcases the Barenaked Ladies' more romantic side. Through all the jokes, these guys are a bunch of suckers for love and such sensitivity is a great match for their quirky musical persona. Gordon is a great introduction to the Barenaked Ladies' sweet comic relief and it's sure to be a college rock mainstay.

...122 hours of beer (part 2) (teenagequiet), Thursday, 15 June 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

I heard this record every fucking day for about a year and a half when I was working at my first record store job (in Canada, obv). And we sold TRUCKLOADS of this motherfucker. I worked with a guy who looked like a member of the Muppet band (and on second thought, he wouldn't have looked out of place on this record cover). He had a tight, curly afro that resembled the hairdo of Howie Mandell. Anyways, he was the fuck chop that insisted on playing this drivel day-in, day-out.
I bet I could sing you the whole record.
Sometime in 93, I was at a show in Calgary, and Fatbeard Badshave walked in. And pretty much everyone in the whole bar was mortified and making fun of him. It was hilar.

an acquaintance at a party attempted (yet again) to convince me of the BNL's greatness. he did not succeed. We also argued about the virtues (or lack thereof, imho) of Bono's public politics. Good thing I was deeeeeeeerunk on Grey Goose.

Of the naked cover, the first 3 from the left,of the gordon cover, lowerleft corner guy?

I'm guessing the guys that seem the least fat/bald/goofy, but you might like those qualities...
