christoff (christoff), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Is anyone gonna step up say they don't like Mission Of Burma??

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

oh yeah, i can't imagine anyone here not liking mission of burma...

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris Barrus hates them, therefore that candidate is quashed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Pixies?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Pixies?

Ugh.

hstencil, Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Well shut my mouth.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Teg Nugent

rms (rms), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

The Supremes were a godawful plague.

How about Iggy Pop?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

How about the Stone Roses (c. 1989)? I don't see how anyone could not like their first album at least.

Transient, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

iggy pop is useless.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Iggy pop is useless.

I agree. The Stooges are vastly overrated. And the Iggy-penned comments accompanying the re-mastered Raw Power album have got to be the most self-serving, self-aggrandizing liner notes I've ever seen.

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, doesn't everyone love nursery rhymes? they're catchy as all hell.

Chemical Queen (Rahul Kamath), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

my mott the hoople idm covers band with the robotic bear from disneyworld's 'jamboree' thing

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Useless, eh? Well, there's no accounting for taste I suppose......cretins.

How about NEW ORDER?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

New Order is GREBT!!!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry alex, i'm just too mired in pabulum over here.

new order could be THE ONE. although i have my doubts.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone loves *some* Kraftwerk for sure.

Simon, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

The answer is clear: Gene Loves Jezebel

Motel Hell (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Only a heartless person could take issue with Stevie Wonder's peak work, but there are heartless people in the world.

wl (wl), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Stevie Wonder? Surely crap like "I Just Called to Say I Love You," and his participation in "That's What Friends Are For" and "Ebony & Ivory" negate any merit his "peak work" may have earned him.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone loves something by Ministry!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I don't like New Order. It ain't the one y'all are looking for.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Kool and the Gang!!!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Queen. obviously.

I could try Pulp I guess (ps. anyone in the UK seen the new BT Broadband ad?)...

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Wild and Peaceful is way the hell classic, but "Celebrate" comes hazardously close to negating it.

I know: JAMES BROWN

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

The Clash!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't recall anyone here saying anything bad about the Pixies. Though maybe I just don't read everything.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

do people dislike "celebration" because of its constant prescence at weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc.? besides "she's so fresh" makes up for that immediately!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron beats me to the punch re "Fresh" (exciting! she's so inviting to meeeeeee!)

I also don't recall anyone saying completely dismissing Public Enemy -- maybe their stuff after 1991, but not their entire oeuvre. Though I could be wrong.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

the Beatles? I've only met one person in my life who claimed to completely hate the Beatles, but I suspected it was some kind of silly, reactionary thing...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:44 (twenty-three years ago)

well it's still hate so it would count (if they were posting here) (i think senior lurker DG hates the beatles: he's a silly, reactionary thing too haha)

pinefox hates public enemy (ok that's a guess but i will eat kelley deal if i'm wrong)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I just saw Kool and the Gang over the summer in Baltimore. The crowd was mostly black and old enough to remember when those songs came out. This really added to the experience, as I would have hated to watch the show with anyone who though that liking Kool and the Gang was a way of being ironic.

Can I add... The Spinners, Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, Chaka Khan?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

in that recent White Stripes MOJO article Jack White says something to the effect that "anyone who says they don't like the Beatles doesn't really like music." Which strikes me as kinda true, but on the other hand maybe this should just go under the "irritating things musicians say" thread...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like the Beatles. The Pixies only strike me as okay, pretty good - I don't love them. I do like them much better than the Stone Roses, though. Has anyone shot down the Beach Boys yet? Mark is joking with the Clash, but I think Pulp and James Brown are still going. A few more worth trying: Little Richard, Al Green, Buzzcocks, Undertones, Shangri-Las, T. Rex.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like Pulp, but I can get behind James Brown and the Beach Boys (although I'm skeptical that there isn't at least one Beach Boys hata out there, because I personally know a great many). Not gonna touch why you don't like the Beatles...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

(i don't hate the clash, just some their songs and the way they ponce about) (so i wouldn't shoot em down here, except on the alex in nyc/stevie wonder principle up-thread, which is too harsh i think) (on the other hand i think there are several other more dedicated hatas than me)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

there have been a lot of threads regarding the beatles, and in general, it seems a lot of people can't come to terms with the idea that liking the beatles is something everybody HAS to do. I know that for me, personally, John Lennon's deification has affected my ability to listen to his solo work. But I am a pop loser, so I like McCartney more anyways.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never much liked any of their songs. I own loads of cover versions of their stuff by lots of my favourite singers, and they are invariably the worst moments on albums by Aretha, Al Green, Otis and others. Ordinary performers. By far the most overrated act ever. Imposed loads of bad paradigms, and led to a stupid respectability for pop.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

otis redding is the most overrated act ever martin

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

mission of burma is very boring to me, I don't see why they are interesting to anybody. why mission of burma over magazine?

tyler (tyler), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

sproton layer!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

C'mon, the Beach Boys are hugely sad. Any band that counts Mike Love in its ranks and records tepid shit like "Kokomo" renders themselves utterly ridiculous. Consider them shot down.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

you can't shoot people down by highlighting the things even ppl who love them will hate!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

negate any merit his "peak work" may have earned him.

That's why I said take issue with his peak work, not with the "entirety of his career" or whatever. The crap can negate his merit, but not the merit of stuff like Talking Book, etc.

wl (wl), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

but this "they recorded some crap stuff therefore they are DISQUALIFIED" thing is ridiculous. I defy anyone to name me a musician who didn't disgrace themselves on record at least once. Why does the object of ILM's shared love have to be infallible...?

Anyway, now I guess I'll just throw my weight behind T. Rex and James Brown, since the Beatles and the Boys seem like dubious contenders.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

alex is cheating so as to sneak Killing Joke in when we are all exhausted

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Some not mentioned. In chronological order Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Prima, Elvis presley, Kinks, Skatalites, New Vaudeville Band, Slade, Motorhead, Chic, Human League, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Saint Etienne.....There's no great unifying band or artist after 1991.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

(mott the hoople won this last time, didn't they? i think we had to tie pinefox in a sack for disqualifying people he'd never heard but knew he'd hate if he did)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I veto everyone who ever released a record before 1990 ON PRINCIPLE.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

High Fieldelity - the birth of a genre

the Dirt, Thursday, 19 April 2007 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

Or an even worse novel ("My top five fields" etc.).

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 19 April 2007 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

There are no popular AOR bands today.

99% of British guitar music to thread.

the next grozart, Thursday, 19 April 2007 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

"Field" is the 2007 equivalent of last year's "Wolf". I propse Fieldwolf or Wolffield.

the next grozart, Thursday, 19 April 2007 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

Field of AIDS

modestmickey, Thursday, 19 April 2007 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

Beethoven's a good bet too, but I suspect you'd start a flame war with that on a classical music board

Huh? I'm sure some exist but, speaking as a classical musician, I've never met a classical musician or fan who didn't admire at least some Beethoven. Many people would say that some famous pieces like "Fur Elise" are overrated though.

Sundar, Thursday, 19 April 2007 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

horace andy

lfam, Thursday, 19 April 2007 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure some exist but, speaking as a classical musician, I've never met a classical musician or fan who didn't admire at least some Beethoven.

Ditto. I've hardly ever heard anyone with bad things to say about LvB, discounting those who would foolishly write off classical music altogether.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Thursday, 19 April 2007 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

99% of British guitar music to thread.

What wouldn't be classified as AOR in 1980 isn't AOR today either. Music is timeless. Genres don't change.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 19 April 2007 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

Btw. Beethoven I did pick on purpose. You will have those who consider Bach and Handel "too pompous and affected", Mozart and Haydn "too simple and too twee" and most post-Beethoven classical "too complex".

Beethoven sort of fits between all those.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 19 April 2007 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

Mozart - "too simple". sure.

willem, Thursday, 19 April 2007 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

Leonard Cohen!

stephen, Thursday, 19 April 2007 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

I've hardly ever heard anyone with bad things to say about LvB,

Chuck Berry? :)

discounting those who would foolishly write off classical music altogether.

Well, OK, that settles it :)

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 19 April 2007 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

"Field" is the 2007 equivalent of last year's "Wolf". I propse Fieldwolf or Wolffield.

...on fire.

Will M., Thursday, 19 April 2007 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

Leonard Cohen = over my dead body

Sundar, Thursday, 19 April 2007 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

I'm embarrased to suggest ABBA, Elvis Presley got to me finally, I'll bet everybody likes at least one Dean Martin song, does anyone hate Madness? I think T Rex was probably the best suggestion

roger whitaker, Friday, 20 April 2007 01:34 (nineteen years ago)

all those have their detractors.

no one's moaned about os mutantes yet.

or prince afaik.

the next grozart, Friday, 20 April 2007 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

daft punk?

the next grozart, Friday, 20 April 2007 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

If you'd suggested daft punk 3 years ago - I'd have agreed - but now I couldn't bear to listen to any track,

I'm off to find an os mutants track now - never heard of them :)

roger whitaker, Friday, 20 April 2007 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

Ah yes, teh Os Mutants.

I gotta agree with Avalanches, though.

All different types of people go in for them. Even bogans.

Drooone, Friday, 20 April 2007 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

You've gotta come at this thing sideways: apart from maybe Geir, I bet everyone here would at least sorta like Ayalew Mesfin's "Gud Aderegetchegn."

nabisco, Friday, 20 April 2007 07:24 (nineteen years ago)

Never heard of it.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 20 April 2007 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

mmmmmm, based on the fragment here (track 14) I'm not convinced.

http://www.amazon.com/Ethiopiques-Vol-13-Ethiopian-Groove/dp/B00008VGND

StanM, Friday, 20 April 2007 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

i'm not entirely convinced by the avalanches. it's a bit mild for me.

the next grozart, Friday, 20 April 2007 09:19 (nineteen years ago)

i love 'frontier psychiatrist' but the rest of that avalanches album irritated the hell out of me

lex pretend, Friday, 20 April 2007 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

os mutantes are OK, some good tunes.

avalanches are intolerable. unspeakable. shouldn't be allowed.

m the g, Friday, 20 April 2007 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

Adam & The Ants were just about image, not music.

But but the tunes! Melodic ones, too! Goody Two Shoes, Ant Music, Prince Charming, all wonderful pop singles. Two drum kits, people!

Mark C, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

aww nabisco, i <3 alayew mesfin!

pretzel walrus, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

Actually I have heard it, I just didn't know the title or artist. I must check out some of those Ethiopiques compilations.

Good record that.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

i just went through this whole thing and didn't see sly and the family stone, which is odd. but now that geir's here that might get shot down.

Haikunym said this. He is right. About both bits, sadly.

Scik Mouthy, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

i'm not sure i like sly and the family stone either for some reason. Maybe I haven't heard enough but what I did hear wasn't quite as funky and tough as I'd expected it to be.

the next grozart, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

wasn't being entirely serious with the LvB remark. What I mean is you'll probably get a whole other discussion about him on a classical music board. On here, there's simply not enough people who care.

Honestly, the only way this discussion could ever be relevant, would be if it were limited to popular music, and preferrably stuff that 'everyone' listens to. Not that hard to find something that no-one would object to simply on the account of never having heard it. "Who doesn't like Monk & Canatella?"

the Dirt, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

not that I mean people've never heard Beethoven.

the Dirt, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

The Klaxons, Oasis

Ethan Gaymead, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

ooohoo, yeah it's hard to find someone who hates those guys

the Dirt, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

Monk and Canatella were fab! Care In The Community - good record that.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

xpost I love them both, for example.

Monk & Canatella were pretty good actually.

the next grozart, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

Totally agree, love both albums (there aren't more, are there), plus the Terminalhead mixes. Hehe, maybe this is our golden band?

the Dirt, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:56 (nineteen years ago)
