Not really. Satisfaction, HO\onky Tonk, etc are pretty striking, but the acoustic, slightly off-the-beat guitar on "One Hit" gets me off these days more than the hoary chestnuts.

Special comedy award for "Fight", from 'Dirty Work'. "Gonna pulp you to a mass of bruises...there's a hole where your face used to be...gonna smash your face in, slash you with my razor". Not only did it remind one of the grumpy pensioners at the bingo hall even then, but Jagger wasn't exactly built like a tank even as a young 'un. -- dave q (scrape10...), October 21st, 2001.

Several tracks feature drum fills that don't sound at all like the work of Charlie Watts. Ronnie Wood drums on "Sleep Tonight" and "Too Rude." I've read that Watts was strung out on horse for most of the sessions.
Steve Jordan and Anton Fig play on some tracks. Don't know exactly which ones. My hunch is that it's Fig on "Winning Ugly." But Jordan does such a brilliant Watts imitation (see Keith Richards' "Struggle") that it's impossible to tell which songs he's on.

Interesting. Even though Wikipedia sez Jordan & Fig, they're not in those credits. I still say it's Fig on "Winning Ugly," because (even without the absurdly gated snare) it's so utterly uncharacteristic of Watts.

Watts has spoken openly about a period in the mid-1980s when his previously-moderate use of alcohol and drugs became problematic: "[My drug and alcohol problems were] my way of dealing with [family problems]... Looking back on it, I think it was a mid-life crisis. All I know is that I became totally another person around 1983 and came out of it about 1986. I nearly lost my wife and everything over my behaviour."[7] A famous anecdote relates that during the mid-1980s, an intoxicated Jagger phoned Watts' hotel room in the middle of the night asking "Where's my drummer?". Watts reportedly got up, shaved, dressed in a suit, put on a tie and freshly shined shoes, descended the stairs, and punched Jagger in the face, saying: "Don't ever call me your drummer again. You're my fucking singer!"

Watts is noted for his personal wardrobe: the British newspaper The Telegraph has named him one of the World's Best Dressed Men. In 2006 Vanity Fair elected Watts into the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame, joining his style icon, Fred Astaire.[8]

Man, I don't know. I've always thought it was far and away their worst album, and I've heard them all. I think what came before - Undercover - and after - Steel Wheels - are much, much stronger. ― Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, February 1, 2005 9:16 PM (10 years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

idk why I decided to listen to this album today but Mick is crazy on it
I think this album would've been better received if "One Hit" was the first single... "Harlem Shuffle" isn't so good

Probably should have put this in a Jagger solo thread, but I heard "Lucky In Love" out and about this weekend, and how ridic is the poker dialogue over the coda? Easily one of the most embarrassing Mick Moments.

a lot of this sounds like they're trying to be punk & makes me wish they'd tried harder. it's not great or terrible, having not heard anything else after exile i can't say xgau isn't right. the reggae song is awful even by rockers-doing-reggae standards though

Keith's "Sleep Tonight" is pretty good. In the post-Tattoo You era, he developed a knack for making beautifully wrecked ballads.

I still don’t see the appeal in things like “Hold Back” - it’s aggressive, it has energy, but it all feels directionless and instantly forgettable.
