I checked out Aeroplane on Myspace (owing to this thread's recommendation and because they're myspace friends with all the Swedish balearic mafia) only to discover that their eponymous song is my favourite track (or equal favourite with "Let It Happen") from Lindstrom & Prins Thomas' Radio 1 Essential Mix. So large sounding.

Table you might be able to make a good case aurally, as the beatdown guys do venture into "chill out" (for lack of a better phrase) areas. But I wouldn't think that the music comes from taking style notes on say, Balearic comps and flamenco guitar players.

The entire Badly Drawn Boy "Promises" 12 inch is U&K - Reverso 68, Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve and A Mountain of One each offering a different gorgous definition of "balearic". The AMO1 remix is ridiculously epic, as with "Freefall" it reminds me of Marillion a bit.

i've never actually heard his music, but I have to respect the guy for the company he keeps. He helps run those reissue labels with andy votel like Delay 68 and Finder's Keepers.

there's a CD-promo rip of that single that has instrumental versions of the Reverso & AMO1 mixes. surprisingly, the BTWS mix is my *least* favorite, and i'll actually go so far as saying i don't like it, even though those EPs and a few other remixes (findlay brown) are spectacular. what happened?

i've noticed that most of the Wizard's Sleve remixes just add backwards guitar to the song to make it "trippy" and call it a day.

this weekend my friend played me the b side of that peter visti jolene edit - "rain". so ridiculously amazing. it's funny because the music sounds like it's slowed down to 33 but the vocals are normal.

yeah that one really is great. all three cuts on that 12".

i can't really get into his "balearic love" 12". not feeling either side.

everyone should really, really check outthat mix that Tim is talking about over here. totally pwns my mix, though a slightly different theme. i listened to it twice on big speakers tonite and it was a real treat.

"on the beach" is a great tune, but i'm not crazy about terje's "megamix" treatment. (h4rvey loves this song).

the Andreas Vollenweider is sooooo good though - its on that same mix Tim and I are repping for. its the tune my co-resident likes to play at the end of the night.

Rea is kinda reminding me of Dire Straits, which i like, and Bruce Springsteen, which i'm not liking.

Love the Sorceror and Hatchback tracks on Grady's mix - hadn't heard them before.

Also that's my favourite track from the Strategy album, so lustrous (I stand by my Luomo-goes-post-rock comments).

But the biggest revelation provided by grady's mix is that my mp3 of peter visti's "Jolene" edit must be pitched down! The copy I have is much slower, and Dolly sounds like a guy - actually precisely like one of those reosnant mid-to-late 80s rock singers that fits this balearic style (e.g. see the vocalist for A Mountain of One).

hmmm. i started that track at like +8 to mix in but i'm pretty sure i slowed it down to normal speed before the bass dropped in.

i dont have the vinyl - my version is from a t0rrent.

No I hear it slow down in your mix, but the speed for the vast majority of it makes perfect sense - Dolly's vocals are as per the original song.

I think the version I have (googling zshare) was played at 33rpm rather than 45rpm.

prins thomas played this last night, which got a great reaction. (not very balearic revival).

as it was playing i started thinking about the aeroplane track upthread for some reason, specifically thinking that PT probably had a promo copy with him. i started hearing the transition from the linkwood track into the aeroplane track in my head. and lo and behold that was what he mixed into. it sounded great on a big system, and got a great reaction.
