Bump - out today and still great. Lots of stuff on Stylus too.

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 26 February 2007 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Nice work, Nick. I enjoyed that interview/article. :)

Roz, Monday, 26 February 2007 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

The lack of love here saddens me. This is an awesome, awesome record.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

Is it out in the States or am I not looking hard enough? (Probably the latter.) Maybe I'll pick it up when I'm over there next week.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

Not hit the States yet, I gather (from something Derek at Stylus said about his Yank PR emailing him all like "why so early with the coverage?!").

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

Wikipedia sez he came out as bisexual.

I always want to like Patrick Wolf more than I actually do.

Me too. On paper, it seems like the sort of thing I would love (maybe because I like Final Fantasy so much?) but it just doesn't click for me.

That said, I would totally fuck him.

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 22:30 (nineteen years ago)

I like Bluebells, but the rest of the record ranges from *yawn* to *cough*.

frilly, Thursday, 1 March 2007 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

Oh I was going to go buy it today but forgot. In which case I'll prob wait until Neon Bible comes out and get 'em both together.

ledge, Thursday, 1 March 2007 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

"The Magic Position" video is kinda fun. He does have a nice smile!

His new corny, posi songs are like a feminized, orchestral kitsch version of Andrew WK -- they get me going in the morning on my way to work.

vermonter, Friday, 2 March 2007 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

I loved Patrick's first two albums, particularly "Wind in the Wires" which I thought was absolutely stunning.. so when I heard "Accident and Emergency" I was so terribly disappointed. It really is a horrible song. And I don't like his new image either, it's annoyingly kitschy. I do like the "Magic Position" title track though so I guess I'll give the album a shot after all.

The Brainwasher, Friday, 2 March 2007 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

"a feminized, orchestral kitsch version of Andrew WK" - Sorry, I'm having real difficulty in imagining this.

Soukesian, Friday, 2 March 2007 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

well, they're huge, exceedingly happy + sincere anthems by guys playing w/ 'dark' imagery in most of their previous work

vermonter, Friday, 2 March 2007 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

Goth wins again.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 3 March 2007 00:00 (nineteen years ago)

Goth wins every day, muthafucka!

Soukesian, Saturday, 3 March 2007 00:04 (nineteen years ago)

rizzx, Saturday, 3 March 2007 00:10 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
Did anybody see him doing When Doves Cry with Charlotte Church on her show?

ledge, Sunday, 25 March 2007 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

Oh my god I wish I'd seen that.

Bimble, Sunday, 25 March 2007 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

And yeah, goth wins everyday mothafucka!!!!

Bimble, Sunday, 25 March 2007 10:54 (nineteen years ago)

the new album is the greatest "getting ready to go out on the town" razzle-dazzle record i've heard in a very long time. fuck i'm smitten.

four weeks pass...
Really dig the album! sounds great. never heard him before this one.

scott seward, Thursday, 26 April 2007 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

but but he hit his drummer onstage and then fired him and then said he'd stop performing and and, you know, all kinds of non-straight melodramatixx and stuff! :-(

StanM, Thursday, 26 April 2007 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

What the where?

Anyway, yay to it being out over here, then. Must scrounge for it next weekend.

StanM, Thursday, 26 April 2007 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

Whatever! (I am over stroppy musicians at this point; it's all about bitter programmers.)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 April 2007 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

seeing him slap his half-conscious drummer is worth the wait... sure you don't want to see it? :-)

StanM, Thursday, 26 April 2007 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

"this is the last song i will ever sing"

braveclub, Thursday, 26 April 2007 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

"Oh no I've released a B-side again."

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 April 2007 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

Patrick is not gay.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

so gay

cutty, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

Patrick is not gay.
Patrick is not gay.
Patrick is not gay.
Patrick is not gay.
Patrick is not gay.
Patrick is not gay.
Patrick is not gay.
Patrick is not gay.
Patrick is not gay.

braveclub, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

No, he really isn't. He's not 100% straight either, but his last serious relationship was two-years with a female art gallery manager, and he got seriously prissy with a female announcer who said "shame he's gay" after introducing him at a gig in the States; his reply was "you should spend the night with me before making comments like that, dear".

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

Pfft. TOUCHY.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

Him or me?!

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Well, both of you, now.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

YOU'RE SUCH A BITCH, NED RAGGETTY ANNE.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

Please accept my apologies, Patrick Wolf + street team.

StanM, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

i heard he can only come when people wonder about his sexuality in teh wrong way.

SusanD, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

ha!

cutty, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

I've listened to this album a million times and still can't find a copy here in Australia. Why? (Also, if I do find it, will I have the guts to carry an album with THAT COVER to the counter? Dude's not even wearing socks!)

Susan's periodic comments on this thread = gold.

Roz, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
Augustine, Magpie, Stars, Bluebells.

remy bean, Sunday, 13 May 2007 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

This is my favorite of '07 so far. I know I'm hardly the first to point out how expansive & celestial the vox are, but to me they take a distinctive backseat to the percussive strumminess and washy '30s movie soundtrack strings. Like Leonard Cohen by way of Kate Bush. Augustine at 1:34 – 2:04 has lodged itself in my brain, it's all Depechy on Zoloft.

remy bean, Sunday, 13 May 2007 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

I listened to this again a couple of times last week and I still adore almost every second (aside from the *ping* at the end of the title track, which is mixed really badly [just the *ping*, not the track]). People keep saying it's him "going pop" as if it's entirely frothy and insubstantial, but Bluebells, Augustine, Stars, Overture - these are big, deep, brooding, beautiful tunes, not Steps with chops. It's just an incredibly beautiful, rich album, so musical. I think the guy's a borderline genius.

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 14 May 2007 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

I like it, but I think he's slightly mismanaged this album. It isn't going pop - its a few pop songs chucked into a 'normal' PW album. That isn't so bad, but it does kind of clash with his habitual little interludes. Whenever I listen to it it feels kind of fragmented - which means less patience for those occasions where he overdoes it (on Magpie esp).
In general, he's one of those people who's always sufficiently compelling to keep me involved with his persona. And he makes enough good songs to be worth coming back to. But I've never really been blown away, there's always a feeling that he could do a little better.

Greist, Monday, 14 May 2007 09:45 (nineteen years ago)

five months pass...

i have just witnessed one of his legendary on-stage tantrums. This time out of nowhere, he throws a hissy fit in the middle of "Tristan", flips his mic in the air and walks offstage for ten minutes. What a drama queen.

Roz, Sunday, 11 November 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

but other than that, gotta say he was pretty fantastic! He managed to charm the crowd back after composing himself, which I thought was kind of admirable.

Roz, Sunday, 11 November 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, I just witnessed this as well. Seemed like he fell/wanted a wardrobe change. Plus bubbles and flashes and Mika. The encore was great.

Chubinder, Sunday, 11 November 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha yes. i was up near the front, and one guy ahead was saying that Patrick got pissed because his keyboards had not been set up properly and kept wobbling. And then he knocked it over, and promptly flipped out. But yes, it was probably bubbles and flashes and Mika too.
