between that list & the electrik red one it's like 40% ilx, 50% my aim buddy list & 10% people who read so many shrimp

it's sort of depressing how small an impact our obvious consensus picks really have

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 12:02 (sixteen years ago)

also "soldier" is amazing

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 12:02 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno, lex, the consensus around the-dream seems pretty ilm-spawned, it just took a couple years to mushroom outwards. that does point to ilm-consensus as being slower to penetrate the larger crit-world than, say, p4k-consensus, but duh a lot more people read pitchfork than read ilm

i remain v skeptical about The-Dream hype being ilm-spawned -- basically he triangulates a lot of things (moderately popular as an artist but big time producer/writer, weird/bad singing voice, idiosyncratic auteur vibe, multi-song suites and concept-y albums) that were always going to mark him as way more indie/critic-friendly than the overwhelming majority of mainstream R&B.

The GAPDY Band - "You Jopped A Bomb On Me" (some dude), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

its not ilm spawned ilm were just early adapters (well the 8 of us who paid attention to him around the 1st album anyway)

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:09 (sixteen years ago)

his 1st album was a sleeper hit as much commercially as it was critically, but please, continue back-patting

"i helped shape the critical consensus on the-dream and all i got was this lousy t-shirt"

Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:19 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I just think a lot of the people who weren't paying attention the first time around and then did pick up on the 2nd album wouldn't have done so if we hadn't gotten the ball rolling on him critically. I mean, if it can all be boiled down to who The-Dream is and what he does, then why only the new album and not Love/Hate? I think the answer is obvious: critical momentum.

xp: I'm not trying to be all I/we were there first. I'm just observing, not taking credit.

i'd look psychotic in a baklava (The Reverend), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:20 (sixteen years ago)

im not sure what your point is -- lots of 'just folks' were sleeping on him too? so we werent even taking our cues from what was popular -- *pats self on the back more*

the first album sold more and had more hits!

i'd look psychotic in a baklava (The Reverend), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

it's kinda weird that the first album got slept on to the extent it did, given the magnitude of the hits he'd written

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:22 (sixteen years ago)

rev the ball was kinda rolling on him critically with or without ilm, imo. there were ppl into him outside of this sphere as well

fair, I just didn't see it at the time (which could be a sign of my own myopia, sure), whereas when LvM came out it all of a sudden plaudits all over the place, 4.5 stars in RS, etc

Moving away from Terius for just a moment, only three voters for Ryan Leslie, one of which was me:

Brandon Soderberg
Ian Steaman
Renato Pagnani

Very disappointing.

well, Love/Hate dropped like 6 months after "Umbrella" hit, and virtually every other major hit he's had besides "Bed" has been since then -- it's not like Ne-Yo's first album coming a solid year and a half after "Let Me Love You' or something, The-Dream jumped from writer of hit songs to major label artist pretty much overnight.

anyway that first album got tons of positive and sometimes rave reviews in Rolling Stone, NYT, Vibe, Entertainment Weekly, Pop Matters, etc. upon its initial release, way before he was an 'ILM favorite.'

The GAPDY Band - "You Jopped A Bomb On Me" (some dude), Thursday, 21 January 2010 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

yeahm the whole ILM embrace of the dream seemed like it came somewhere after poptimist major mag coverage, but before the dribbles of alt adoption
