new Fopp opening 222 tottenham court road. London

dunno when...

thats up by Habitat and Heals, looks pretty big, although I hope they dont try to put a cafe in it lke they did with the edinburgh rose st. one.

danny boy (danny boy), Thursday, 15 June 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

So Fopp are the Starbucks of music then (that'll be that furniture shop that's been closing down for the last six months then).

I don't suppose that record stall round the back of Goodge Street will be there much longer after it's opened.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 15 June 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

I think that record stall round the back of Goodge Street is already gone, haven't seen it months

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 10:58 (nineteen years ago)

New one in Oxford too. Where Massive Records, home of staggeringly expensive vinyl, used to be.

hurrah!

MC -- what part of cheap cds don't you like? what should a record shop do? sell them moer expensively? i don't get the beef.

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, where Massive Records, home of specialist vinyl - and CDs - you couldn't get anywhere else in Oxford, used to be.

That answer your question, Henry?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

Everyone sells CDs cheaply these days

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

Rough Trade shop to thread.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:09 (nineteen years ago)

not really, given that they're going for two completely different markets. specialist record shops were closing before fopp came along -- i think *every* specialist shop in cambridge did.

xpost

maybe, but fopp has super-cheap stuff.

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

Ray's Jazz Shop to thread.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

never bought a single record from massive in six years of going there.

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

Rather depressingly, I note that Selectadisc has started selling DVDs, shunting the cheap CDs out of the way so all us of google-eyed cineastes can get a better view of their £4.99 copies of "Mutiny On the Buses" et al.

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

maybe, but fopp has super-cheap stuff.

Have you been to HMV lately?

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

The same, mainstream back catalogue can't-shift super-cheap stuff as well!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

Er, Selectadisc?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

x-post

I saw Massive Records had closed when I was last in Oxford, which I think is a shame- they did have a huge range of dance stuff, and it was a big draw for DJs all over the south of England. No web presence any more apparently. That second hand place the other side of Gloucester Green will be next to go.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

If Avid falls, Oxford falls!

(also if it goes it will remove my last excuse for visiting Oxford city centre)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

Selectadisc. Yes that place that was taken over by Sister Ray with the promise that the takeover would not change their policy vis a vis the stock they bought and sold.

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:17 (nineteen years ago)

... and where you can now buy "Slap Her, She's French" on DVD for £2.99!

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

They seem to have kept their promise so far. Now you can get lots of super-cheap stuff in the racks at SelectaRay but they have a far WIDER RANGE of stock which couldn't be sustained by chainstores. Take a look in any HMV other than the one in Oxford Circus and you'll see what I mean.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Oh I know that Marcello, but slippery slope innit?

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

Then the streets of our town will be a pallid parade of identikit chains selling the same forty CDs BUT AT LEAST THEY'RE SUPER-CHEAP

in which event I shall have no option but to retire to my yellowing spines and ruefully golden memories of days of plenty.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

"The whole world as Mister CD?"
"That is my hope. What's yours?"
"I'd like to be the first man on the moon."
"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA" etc.

(McGoohan/McKern, p.p. MC)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

i am terminally mainstream. bring on the £5 double-discs of 'collateral'!

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

Just bought "Beta band" best of 2CD for £5.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

the mainstream should be terminated.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

no gags about beta band best of 2cd lucky to fill half of one cd etc plz.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:33 (nineteen years ago)

Dammit!

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

selectadisc pre-sister ray sold DVDs too - they've been in the store for at least two years (on the back right-hand side of the shop, maybe they've moved them to a more prominent position recently!) but again - most of the cheap DVDs sold by selectadisc are as cheap (or cheaper) in the HMV Oxford Circus

haha xpost i was also searching for that beta band 'gag'

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:37 (nineteen years ago)

Well, the 2nd CD is a live gig, so I guess yr OTM.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

maybe they've moved them to a more prominent position recently!

As I said, they've been moved to be more in-yer-face in line with modern retail torture, sorry, techniques

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:42 (nineteen years ago)

Fopp have got a box with the first 3 Duran Duran albums for £7. I managed to resist.

It is strange, isn't it, the Mutiny On The Buses thing? It's not like they're trying to attract a Mutiny On The Buses clientele, they just seem to be hoping that all the J. Spaceman fans are into Mutiny On The Buses as well.

Slap Her, She's French? Sounds worth a punt.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:43 (nineteen years ago)

I just made up the "Mutiny on the Buses" and "Slap Her, She's French" bit. Improvisation, dear boy!

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I saw that Duran box and was going to mention it to youse. It's certainly never going to be an "oh no" thread in my case.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

I should have said, ""Mutiny on the Buses" and "Slap Her, She's French" or others of that stamp and kidney" perhaps

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

Holiday on the Buses is good.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

Likewise, I realise that the phrase "the first three Duran Duran albums for £7" is a better straight man than Ernie Wise, but please resist...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry, Dadaismus. I am a bit slow on the uptake.

In fairness, they do have a fair smattering of "off-kilter" crap as well.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 16 June 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

I'd buy On The Buses dvds if they were that cheap! Reg varney rocks!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 16 June 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

I started a new job in Soho last week so I will soon be bankrupt from visiting Berwick St every lunchtime.

When did the bargain basement in Mr CD disappear? I used to find some good stuff in there occasionally. It's been 4 years since I was last working in central London, so it could have been ages ago. Was surprised to see Selectadisc gone and Sister Ray moved. Also surprised to see Reckless still there since the Camden & Islington branches shut down, figured they'd gone under or something.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 16 June 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

where do you get all your money from, Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 June 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

Bargain basement in Mr. CD only disappeared recently, but it looks like they've moved the stock upstairs - or most of it. (xpost)

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

I've been deterred from buying anything out of Mister CD since the last two occasions when I did so, the security alarm went off in every other shop I subsequently entered and it was embarrassing to have my bags searched every bloody time. On both occasions it was the Mister CD CDs, so to speak, which set the alarms off.

Just a warning.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 June 2006 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

The last thing I bought out of Mr CD was... a DVD! In fact, I've only just got (was given actually) a DVD player and it's the only DVD I've ever bought because I've realised I have no idea why anyone would want to own a DVD. (The DVD was Parliament/Funkadelic gig from 1976. £3)

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

where do you get all your money from, Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy?

Thats why i said i'd buy it if they were that cheap Not smoking or drinking makes these things affordable.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 16 June 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

I've realised I have no idea why anyone would want to own a DVD.

wtf!

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

Neither have I, frankly.

I've never seen the point of collecting DVDs. You watch them once and put them back on the shelf.

The great thing about listening to music is that you can do other things at the time, e.g. reading or writing or cooking dinner. You can't do that with DVDs so that also puts me off them.
