Alex in SF, Thursday, 15 March 2007 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

if anyone's interested, Cameron does a weekly happyhour at mint lounge (not the karaoke bar) and i'll be bringing some records along tonight. i have absolutely no idea how to dj, but i have nice records.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 15 March 2007 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

i'm ready to be schooled by the almighty Jaxon. that sounds sarcastic, but i'm totally serious. should be fun. and ... who cares about djing? it's all about free drinks and seeing tha homiez.

Steve Shasta, Friday, 16 March 2007 01:37 (nineteen years ago)

How good is the soundsystem at Jelly's? Will the NarcoHz/Full Melt people bring their own subwoofers?

There hasn't been much dubstep in SF since the last N-Type show - and Scuba is excellent...

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

No worries... It's the Subscience soundsystem. Looks like Scuba's playing tonight as well. It's a more dubstep-heavy bill but the venue is naaaasty.

Uh that doesn't appear to be tonight.

Alex in SF, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Also since when is Clever dubstep?

Alex in SF, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Alex in SF: "Uh that doesn't appear to be tonight."

Jeepers. The heat must be getting to me.

Uh, a return visit from Scuba tomorrow night then.

Will this live up to the big-upping people gave the last Gun Club show?

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 08:48 (nineteen years ago)

gun club are having the same shows in the same order as last year. doesn't anyone else think that's odd? what are the chances?

JOE BOYD
Wednesday, March 21 // 7:00 pm
reading & booksigning
Joe Boyd’s first job was to bring Muddy Waters to Britain in 1964. When Dylan went electric at Newport, Boyd was stage manager. His first session as record producer was with Eric Clapton. A year later, he produced Pink Floyd’s first single. He then discovered, produced and managed Nick Drake. Joe Boyd lived and helped shape the many facets of rock, which he recounts in White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s (softcover, $18.00).

Record and film producer Joe Boyd was born in Boston, and produced the work of Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, REM and others. He also produced the soundtracks to "Deliverance" and "A Clockwork Orange," as well the documentary, "Jimi Hendrix," and the acclaimed film, "Scandal." Boyd lives in London.

jaxon, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

Stephen Stapleton is coming to our fair city along with I Am Spoonbender.

Yay!

Perhaps Blixa Bargeld will be in tha house?

Cameron Octigan, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 23:43 (nineteen years ago)

booka shade was yay but wtf mezzanine sound porblems (again!?)

The Macallan 18 Year, Saturday, 24 March 2007 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

^ morgan?

i went briefly to mezzanine last night but was totally turned off by the crowd. everyone around me seemed like new jersey guido ravers.

anyone going to maurice fulton tonight?

jaxon, Saturday, 24 March 2007 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

Did anyone make it to the "beta" new Filter.SF] last night? I RSVP'd but forgot to go... I hope it turns out well. Kontrol could do with a little more competition.

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Saturday, 24 March 2007 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

And what does this mean? Gillis cannot be playing at a real senior prom, right?

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Saturday, 24 March 2007 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

anyone else going to Gilberto Gil tomorrow night?

ooioo on monday too.

Steve Shasta, Saturday, 24 March 2007 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

Oops. Dropped the ball on Gilberto Gil. Uh, anyone got a spare ticket?

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Saturday, 24 March 2007 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

ooioo on monday for sure.

anyone interested in maurice fulton tonight?

Cameron Octigan, Saturday, 24 March 2007 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

yes, but still not sure where is

Dominique, Saturday, 24 March 2007 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

yep, morgan here.

haha "guido raver vibe" is right on the money jaxon. we had to move like three times to get away from schweaty bros. i'll come up for maurice fulton.. i can't stop listening to that kathy diamond record. don't suppose i can crash on someones floor?

The Macallan 18 Year, Saturday, 24 March 2007 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

gun club is at moulton again.
(i'm 99% sure about this)

booka shade: music was great, sound was fucked, crowd was HORRIBLE.

IT'S NOT A ROCK SHOW. turn the damn club sound on. WTF?
at one point every single person around me was shouting their conversations at each other to be heard above the music. plus broheems continually dancing into me as if i'm their fricking springboard to cool dance moves.

on the upswing i heard two new tunes that were pretty killer. but the second the show was over we were out the door. and i realize that the moxie music DJ's were out of town in Miami but their replacements were zzzzzzzzzz.

i'm going to do my best to hit up the gun club tonight, cause Maurice is the shit (and ditto about the Kathy Diamond record. just snagged the album off oink and it's KILLER), but i'm DJ'ing the house party of a good friend which should be a complete blast so I may be missing it. My current plan is to show up at 2.30 though. hopefully.

BATTAGS, Saturday, 24 March 2007 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

re: girl talk -- sounds like a hipster jam if i ever heard of one, i highly doubt it's an actual prom.

next week: Radio Slave and the Underground Resistance party (with Jonah Sharp!)

and i'll see yall at OOIOO as well, as my request just went through! w00t!

BATTAGS, Saturday, 24 March 2007 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

re: booka shade

yeah, it could have been louder last night. i always ask people to turn up the volume, but ... oh well.

Cameron Octigan, Saturday, 24 March 2007 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

i gave serious thought to just shouting TURN IT UP in between songs. i dunno what kind of pull you have over there, Cameron, but the sound kinda killed the night for a lot of people...

BATTAGS, Sunday, 25 March 2007 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

I thought the sound last night was decent. There was one point when the bass cut out but other than that it was loud enough for me. I think the club system at Mezzanine blows so I'm actually glad they didn't use it. I don't understand why some of you thought the crowd was "horrible". Everybody was pretty into it once Booka Shade came on and the people around me seemed to be having a good time... nothing wrong with that. I could care less how they were dressed.

Booka Shade put on a pretty good show, somewhat cheesy at certain points but I liked how they constantly added new elements and changed things up. All in all, I had a fun time.

Xander, Sunday, 25 March 2007 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

i have just come from the Cow Palace where they are having the flower show. i suggest everyone go there for the Gong display they have in one of the Marketplace wings. get a friend to bang the gong and stand there with your head relatively close - you will be filled with incredible multiple levels of vibration. i'm not even kidding. i had no idea how great gongs were. they are really amazing!!!

SusanD, Sunday, 25 March 2007 02:08 (nineteen years ago)

this wouldn't be tim p's party, would it?

jaxon, Sunday, 25 March 2007 02:49 (nineteen years ago)

i WAS going to roll up to the Surya Dub party at Club 6 but seeing how it's getting......

dice in my pockets, Sunday, 25 March 2007 04:50 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, isn't this a surefire shortcut to deaf city?

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Sunday, 25 March 2007 07:28 (nineteen years ago)

you make a quick stop in pleasurevillekingdom. the reason you go to cow palace as opposed to some other place with a gong (are they easy to come by?) is b/c you can bang it as many times as you want w/o annoying people b/c there's already a lot of commotion overhandling of shit, obsessives/weirdos there. plus there are several different kinds - he has a really nice lighter sounding one. but yes, you do have to get really close to it tho b/c of the extraneous noise etc. and yet, it is still awesomeness. bonus: the bonsai trees (which i dont' even like usually) were very cool.

SusanD, Sunday, 25 March 2007 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

It does sound quite pleasurable, and I guess it's not so much worse than sticking your face in a subwoofer to feel the sub-bass tickle your nostrils. Hmm.

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Sunday, 25 March 2007 09:16 (nineteen years ago)

How odd is this?

Plaid, Sutekh and Telefon Tel Aviv on the same bill sounds very nice, but 3,2,1, Lift Off! A collective experience toward the Overview Effect.???

so you're Mike B/heywood, right? tina is one of my best friends.

jaxon, Monday, 26 March 2007 02:15 (nineteen years ago)

how was maurice fulton?

pretty great. i got there at 2 and stayed till 4. super sweaty. he played lots of great disco and a bit of chicago house.

jaxon, Monday, 26 March 2007 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

yeah - mikebee/heywood tis me. tina is great! wish i could have gone to check out maurice, but i had made the commitment to tim way before so i couldn't go. we actually left round 4 but i was too faded to even consider being seen in public. :)

BATTAGS, Monday, 26 March 2007 02:34 (nineteen years ago)

sounds like a good night. i went to hear him the last time he was here and all i remember is good tunes and that it was really dark and sweaty.

tricky, Monday, 26 March 2007 03:15 (nineteen years ago)

I remember being in Amoeba once, and heard "Mike Bee, you have a visitor in electronica. Mike Bee, please meet your visitor in electronica." It was like a beautiful future.

Dominique, Monday, 26 March 2007 03:15 (nineteen years ago)

that "beautiful future" is where i live 40+ hours/week. heh.

BATTAGS, Monday, 26 March 2007 03:48 (nineteen years ago)

just a little FYI on ooioo/neung phak tonight:

doors at 7:30pm
neung phak at 8pm sharp
ooioo at 9pm(?)

the big storm is hitting around 5-6pm for a few hours so watch out for that too.
