"Resist Tim! RESIST!!! "

On my walk between the tram stop and my house on the way home from work it sounded AWESOME. So much so that I played it again when going to get some ice cream and it was merely VERY GOOD. I fully expect it to be AWESOME next time though. It's one of those tunes.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

here's superpitcher - "tell me about it"

s'ok.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

yeah i'm not crazy about it either. it's a little too nettwerk remix for my tastes.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

He's sampling Aaliyah's "I Can Be" - that's the second German house Aaliyah homage!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

aaliyah sample! this had better stll be up when i get back from work, if not can someone gmail please?

(also tim, what's the first german house aaliyah homage?)

lex logged out, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

I think Ronan and stirmonster are absolutely OTM on the Baxendale remix in context as opposed to on its own - it worked perfectly when I heard it in a Mayer set three months ago (even though I was going 'wtf baxendale wtf?' all the way through), but I don't like it so much in the cold light of day. :( Still prefer it to the original though.

spontine (cis), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

I am tentatively disappointed with that Superpitcher, it's a bit lacking in character for him isn't it? I mean sure he has set a high standard but I'm not sure if I'm feeling this one really, barring an epiphany in the next few hours. (I've listened about 3 times)

It sounds a bit like some of the people who've made Superpitcher style records, Richard Davis or Lawrence etc, or like what an English person would sound like trying to copy Superpitcher! Did Ewan Pearson or someone actually make this tune?

(haha just kidding that was mean)

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I think M.R.I.'s "BLue" is the first german house aaliyah homage that Tim is refering to.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

"(also tim, what's the first german house aaliyah homage?) "

MRI's "Blue", which is a quasi-cover of "Try Again".

On first listen (which is unreliable) "Tell Me About It" isn't as good as the "Je Regrette Everything" remix though, or "Heroin" (the other track it's a bit like). Still nice though, and it might well grow on me heaps. It loops that opening piano chord and ghostly "ohhh no" sigh from the intro of "I Can Be" and adds some lightly simmering acid sounds.

x-post x 2

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

The Baxendale vocal: I've just worked out who it sounds like.

That chap from The Blue Aeroplanes! It's Dead Ringers like in it's verisimilitude.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

if were comparing mayers "happiness" and the baxendale mayer remix, then i will take the baxendale vox over the superpitcher any day! those speak and speel parts make me skip the track to the fucked acid breakdown.

in fact, im not sure whether i like the original baxendale or the remix more. thanks for putting them both up!

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

b-b-but Ambrose? ARE YOU HAPPY? HAPPY PEOPLE! ARE YOU HIGH! DANCE BABY DANCE!

Although hearing the speak-and-spell bits always just reminds me of how great the Paul Rutherford track on Ivan Smagghe's Death Disco is.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

LOVE this as well. it's tracky and rushy and full of texture.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

btw i finally figured out what the synth swells right before the falsetto in the baxendale track remind me of -- "thriller"! this on the heels of the realization that jurgen paape's "cream" is a dead ringer for "material girl".

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

It's all about the Neptunes-esque guitar ticks at the end as well.

coral/coral/coral, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

"Cream" made me think more of the Jacksons' "Can You Feel It."

Köhncke's "Krieg" is my favorite of the new tracks, I think -- the Kaito one being a close second. Mikkel, Rex, Field: wrong sides picked.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

i don't know about that andy, "i look into midair" is nothing to scoff at..

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

True. Neither is the Superpitcher track (no Luomo).

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

haha

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

you're such a tease mark! thanks, though.

the mayer "i built this city" is still genius.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

That Baxendale remix is gorgeous. Could easily fit in with some of the better Kompakt Pop releases (Voss, MFA, Dorau/Koehncke).

Has anyone seen the cover to Total 6 yet? Apologies for the design geekery, I just hope they didn't go with that hideous orange they're using on the fliers...

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Purple

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

orange = hideous??!?!!?

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa???
i wish it was orange. purple sucks

WOW is this good

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 28 July 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

seriously, on one listen I'm ready to declare this my favorite single-artist Kompakt album. and counter to Geeta, I think having "Brutalga Square" on it works wonderfully, particularly given its placement--it's a climax, and the rest of the disc works as a lead-up to it, then there's an afterword.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 28 July 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

Re: Total album cover - it's going to be orange I think? That's the color of the promo CD.

Superpitcher played "Krieg" in NYC and it already works a dancefloor wonder when it abruptly switches to the perky and taught dance section 4 minutes in.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 28 July 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

yep, orange

The Field, "Action"--holy shit, "Reach Out I'll Be There" riff! awesome stuff. between that and the 12-inch I'm very excited for whatever s/he/they do next.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 28 July 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

i like that Superpitcher track quite a bit - it's refreshing. The vocal sigh is gorgeous.

I know this is o-l-d but I had no problem with that falsetto in the Baxendale track whatsoever the first time I heard it... The MFA - "The Difference It Makes"? (which ended up on Total 6) Now that really threw me into 'uncomfortable' territory at first. I like it now, although after adjusting to it I realised it's just more outright odd than it is cheesy (my initial feeling).

fandango (fandango), Friday, 18 November 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

fandango did you ever hear the superpitcher remix of the MFA track?

BTW I think everyone loves the falsetto in the Baxendale remix, it's the spoken word section people are a bit dubious about. I'm not, but I become dubious when I imagine being someone else listening to it - i.e. I anticipate the adverse reactions of others.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 18 November 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm 90% certain I didn't you know! Is is less vocal? (despite reading about a lot of the fave remixes floating around in passing I've downloaded hardly any of them. I'll find it (or ask for a YSI) sometime).

I become dubious when I imagine being someone else listening to it - i.e. I anticipate the adverse reactions of others.

I feel that way about nearly everything I like :|

fandango (fandango), Friday, 18 November 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

The Superpitcher remix is much better, only uses a very small, very muffled vocal sample (sounds like "msfhgh DIFFERENCE!")which is used quite sparingly. The magic is in the synth chords, which are utterly ecstatic.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 18 November 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Here's a YSI of the Superpitcher remix fandango.

matt2 (matt2), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

the built this city vocal makes me imagine trent reznor. like it's about to turn into a NIN chorus in a moment. but thankfully doesn't. then JT comes in and saves the day!

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 18 November 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

(xpost) Thank you!

fandango (fandango), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

I think I actually prefer the original tbh :/

I like the Superitcher mix, but it kind of... doesn't quite do enough to justify it's length perhaps? Or what it does is great, but not for all 9-ish minutes? Perhaps I'm not making enough of an effort to hear it as it would be played 'out'.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 26 November 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

fandango how could the skies opening up and God in all his glory descending from the heavens to bless you personally with his radiant smile not justify a 9-ish minute dance track?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 26 November 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm obviously a heathen! It is very close, but I do start to think "oh get on with it" during the remix, despite it's utter lushness...

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 26 November 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm with you on this one Fandango. I only heard the original after the remix and really was blown away by how much better it is (and I normally love Superpitcher remixes).

Sorry for spamming, but some friends of mine are promoting this night in Brighton. It would be great to see some people down for it:

KLIKS PRESENT KOMPAKT
SATURDAY 18.03.06
CONCORDE2, BRIGHTON

http://kliks-net.com/

Main Room:
DJ KOZE (International Pony, Hamburg)
THE MODERNIST - live (Popular, Düsseldorf)
LEE SMITH (IDJ Magazine/kliks)

Bar:
MARK LERMAN (kliks)
CARL WICKER & GRAHAM SCOTT (kliks)

Three years ago, 'minimal' house and techno was virtually non-existent in the UK. Fast forward to the present, and seemingly every club, DJ and magazine is going crazy for the stripped down sounds of labels like Poker Flat, Minus and, of course, Cologne's mighty Kompakt.

As the first British club to dedicate itself to the minimal scene, Kliks has been responsible over the last six years for UK debuts from countless international guests, and built itself a reputation as one of the most respected and rocking club nights in Europe in the process. So, for our inaugural party at Brighton's notorious Concorde venue, we've joined forces with Kompakt to present two of the label's most important and electrifying artists...

DJ KOZE:
Currently Germany's biggest DJ (voted DJ of the year for the last five years in the highly respected SPEX magazine), DJ Koze is without doubt the most formidably talented exponent of minimal turntablism in existence right now. A former runner up in the World DMC Mixing Championships, his jaw-dropping deck skills are in constant demand the world over. Renowned for his wildly eclectic, club-shattering musical selection, you're as likely to hear him spin the Beatles and Otis Redding as you are Plastikman, all tied together with blisteringly on-point technical skill. He's released a string of hit club records on Kompakt, including last year's acclaimed 'Kosi Comes Around' LP, and is also a member of Skint Records' hugely popular electro-disco act International Pony. As if that wasn't enough, he's also behind the chart-topping German Hip-Hop trio Fischbein. We await his debut Kliks performance with baited breath...

THE MODERNIST - live:
An undisputed legend of European dance music, Jorg Burger (aka The Modernist) started releasing records way back in 1988 with his long-time partner, Wolfgang Voigt (aka Mike Ink, founder of Kompakt). Over the next decade, the pair assaulted the world's dancefloors with a bewilderingly prolific surge of classic records, combining the raw intensity of early Detroit techno with their own unique brand of distinctly European, acidic trippiness. Under a plethora of aliases (including The Bionaut, Burger Industries, Autobianchi, and currently, Triola, plus many more) he pretty much defined what is now known as 'minimal', and is cited as the key influence by countless contemporary producers and DJs. Along with Voigt, he founded the Delirium record store in Cologne, which went on to form the basis of the Kompakt empire, as well as editing Dance Attack Magazine and releasing a bona fide mainstream smash LP on EMI (The Bionaut's 'Lush Life Electronica'). Burger's rich, timeless, elegant sound has yet to be surpassed by any of today's laptop generation, and his super-rare live performances have now reached near-mythical status. Don't miss the chance to catch a genuine pioneer in action.

LEE SMITH:
Co-founder of Kliks and original Brighton minimalist Lee Smith has been spotted face down in numerous ditches across Europe this year. Somehow, he always manages to rock the dancefloor and cobble together a coherent minimal reviews page for IDJ magazine, which you'll know is quite an achievement if you've ever seen him on a night out. He writes for loads of sites and music rags and is one of only four UK DJs to have played at Kompakt's seminal Total Confusion club in Cologne.

BAR - KLIKS RESIDENTS:
Our highly-trained residents' squad will be on hand to provide everything from delicate, pristine ambience to terrifying 80s squat-punk. They're all great DJs, but sadly hate each other's guts these days.

And he was awesome.
A lovely rubbery minimal elastic band of sound.

Up and down and all over the place, in that 'i can't beleive he's making me dance to this, but i can't help myself' kind of way.

Anyone recognise any tracks?

foopfoop (foopfoop), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

The video for the new International Pony single "Gothic Girl" is sort of impossible to take seriously, with bad choreographed girls dressed in black and fruit as guitars. "She said she likes black music too, but a different kind."

There's also another Koze video on Youtube where they show a clip of his cover of "Love Can't Turn Around."

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 17 August 2006 01:14 (nineteen years ago)

pretty sure it was actually Fischmob, just sayin

I'm just going to revive this to talk about how totally great Reincarnations: The Remix Chapter 2001-2009 is. The little sped-up vocal sample at the end of the Matthew Dear remix that kicks it off ("Thank you! We've all enjoyed being here tonight! You've been a great audience! We're gonna close with a song for all you dreamers!")--I melt, every time.

Matos W.K., Monday, 27 April 2009 06:39 (seventeen years ago)

I love the sequencing, too. Seems kind of random at first but the more I play it the better it flows. Matthew Dear into Koze vs. Sid Le Rok is really beautiful, the Battles track sneaks up on you from there, and the way "I Think About You" and then "Minimal" march out snaps you to attention without sounding jarring in the least. I will be really happy if I like another album as much this year.
