the wire interview is a lonnnggg time coming IMO as that magazine has unjustifiably ignored minimal techno and house for *years*, critical beats and one-pagers notwithstanding. now i won't cancel my sub.

Beck remix is on bpitch? Dont quite understand that one..

fandango, Thursday, 19 July 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

Never mind..

fandango, Thursday, 19 July 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

He's being "offered" for interviews by distros here (Switz.) in relation to his upcoming Montreux festival set. Mayhaps there's been a policy change...

blunt, Thursday, 19 July 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

Fabric mix. which he refuses to talk about in the interview... if you've been paying attention you'll have your suspicions why

resolved, Thursday, 19 July 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

and good dog, Sherburne interviewed him for a Trax frontcover a few months ago too. they obviously have a fairly decent working relationship at this point.

resolved, Thursday, 19 July 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

speaking of fabric, this saturday w/monolake

creme1, Thursday, 19 July 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

not to mention Mala and Omar S and British Murder Boys

resolved, Thursday, 19 July 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, starting to think i might go to this

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 19 July 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

spoilt for choice!

tricky, Friday, 20 July 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

actually the Trax (spain) cover was last summer. i know he doesn't like to do interviews (and i don't blame him... one US pub asked me to interview him, but only to talk about his partying; i said no) but he does occasionally do them.

as for the beck remix turning up on bpitch -- the bootlegs started coming out before the bpitch pressing was announced (or maybe even signed?). obviously that release schedule could have been better planned, but it's not like bpitch is trying to screw people who bought the boot!

pshrbrn, Friday, 20 July 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

once you get to a certain level i suppose there is no need to do interviews. the publicity writes itself. but from a magazine perspective, you need those big artists to cooperate so you can support the little artists, who actually need the coverage - there's a kind of roll on effect. there's more at stake than simply Villalobos' self-image here, which is why it's frustrating...

good dog, Friday, 20 July 2007 11:25 (eighteen years ago)

that fabric mix has been in the pipeline FOREVER! i'll only accept its existence when i have a copy in my hand.

his 'love family trax' mix from years back is a classic by the way.

sam500, Friday, 20 July 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

Not to mention that they've had the cover art and packaging finished for over six months...at least it's not slipping back a month every time they send out a newsletter lately.

Telephone thing, Friday, 20 July 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

it's done, definitely.

resolved, Friday, 20 July 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

umm forgive the stupid Q
.. but why is the Fabric release causing so much trouble, and not getting released ?

mark e, Friday, 20 July 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

because he never got round to doing it. then he did.

resolved, Friday, 20 July 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

I just got Salvador and like it a lot more than I thought I would.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:32 (eighteen years ago)

Lugom-ix from Salvador is one of his best efforts, tho it isn't his, technically. sort of his, i guess. the 12" of it on frisbee tracks is super cheap almost everywhere i've seen it, and well worth purchase--great tune to mix with.

Wire interview was cool. My second glimpse into the world of Villalobos' living room.

tpp, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

Had a look at this, great interview, too poor to buy right now :'( but I wish there was a pic of that speaker described in the article!!

also amusing to contrast with the new Mixmag cover http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/2875/untitled1id3.jpg pretty unreadable there but basically the usual "have yoo heard about this new thing called mnml?? omgz" spiel (again?!) and Virrarobos namedropping and "the underground is back!" desperate catch-up cringes.

I love how he's straddling all these different audiences right now, HUGE and yet niche at the same time. I <3 this guy, trying not to expect too much from the Fabric mix though...

elan, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

does anyone know what "1º Encuentro Latinoamericano de la Soledad" translates into english as? word for word it's "first degree encounter with latin american solitude". an idiom?

elan, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

1° is a way to write "primero", meaning first, but not first degree. It would be the "first latin american meeting at La Soledad", the name of a location/town -there are several named that way. "Encuentro con la soledad" (finding oneself "in the company of solitude") is a common expression albeit with a different meaning.

blunt, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

And, it's a great track. I haven't heard any others from the above list...

blunt, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

i had a conversation with my friend about 'primero' in the car the other day. we tried to figure it out (and eventually figured out something similar to the above) for close to an hour, driving around to verious locales.

the table is the table, Thursday, 26 July 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

lol mixmag is the funniest magazine evah.

the table is the table, Thursday, 26 July 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

The meaning is "first latin american loneliness 'encuentro' (meeting or conference)" because Los Jaivas and Manduka went out into a remote region to create the album Los Suenos de América.

From the Spanish wikipedia page for the album:

"Los sueños impresos en este álbum son el único resultado aparente de un simbólico Primer Encuentro Latinoamericano de la Soledad que los músicos concertaron en un rincón amado del litoral argentino, intentando conjugar la sabiduría de la montaña, la embriaguez del mar y el hermetismo de la selva".

jim, Thursday, 26 July 2007 07:06 (eighteen years ago)

so his fabric mix is all his own stuff?? i worry when dj's do that. it's like when you see a live set in a club - it all gets a bit samey after a while. the great thing about a properly crafted dj set is that there should be enough variety in the sound to keep you interested.

however because it's the great ricardo i will keep my fingers crossed.

sam500, Thursday, 26 July 2007 08:03 (eighteen years ago)

also 'live set in a club' doesn't necessarily mean all of that DJ's own tracks. the last two 'live sets' i've seen have been quite various.

the table is the table, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:25 (eighteen years ago)

fair point but this mix is all his own work (with admittedly, some collaborations).

sam500, Thursday, 26 July 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, in a way this is Fabric's first artist album from the looks of that tracklist.

matt2, Thursday, 26 July 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

Pure Science's Fabric CD was all Pure Science tracks.

Tim F, Thursday, 26 July 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

..and how I like to use apostrophes incorrectly.

matt2, Thursday, 26 July 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

It is all my productions and it’s a form of introducing an album as a mix. Every time you do an album and then you do the next one, people start to compare how the music is different, why you did it on this label and not that label, they try to define it, “the other album was better,” “there’s no hit like ‘Easy Lee’ on it” and so forth…it’s exhausting, really. So I think you always have to find a new way to introduce your music and present yourself. I chose fabric because Judy has been asking me for 3 or 4 years now, but I’ve been so busy. And it’s really stressful to do a DJ mix. So I figured it would be much easier to do a mix with my own music, and of course fabric is the perfect label for me to do this on. The nicest thing is no one will really be talking about how it’s an album, it’s all moving along very naturally – no big promotion or releasing tracks for radio two months before. I really prefer for it to be treated like a normal mix CD, with no hype. Sound-wise, the mix is going to be more housey than head-y. I’m more known for head-y, trippy music, so of course it is still very trippy and monotone, in the monotone way of delivering always the same tone and doing something to your brain. But it will be more dancey and housey and summery. I always think of the dancefloor when I create music, but not a vision of the actual dancefloor – it’s always a vision of what’s going to happen. Of course at a club like fabric or a couple clubs in Berlin, you have this already. But many other clubs, not so much – so it’s a projection, a vision. And it’s not one track after another after another, it develops very subtly.

veneman, Thursday, 26 July 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

Does anyone know where I could score a mix-length example of him in more of a banging dancefloor style?

I heard him play a live set like that at Mutek 2002, was incredible.

lukas, Thursday, 26 July 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

there is a website of a guy – I think he’s from Ecuador – who has the exact same name as me. He’s a visual artist and he cooks also, he is always giving life advice and that sort of thing. His website is www.ricardovillalobos.com. So many people think it’s me, giving life advice and very nice recipes for food – I always have people come up to me saying “oh, that recipe was incredible!”

oh

lucas pine, Friday, 27 July 2007 01:06 (eighteen years ago)

the fabric birthday mix from last year is pretty straight-forward & banging, particularly the first half.

creme1, Friday, 27 July 2007 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

I love the stretch of that Birthday mix in the second half that goes Shackleton Remix/Freaks remix of Recloose/Beck Cell Phones Dead Remix. I'm hoping that the Fabric CD is like that.

Also the way the first half of that mix ends with such fantastic dubstep tunes.

Tim F, Friday, 27 July 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

his more banging is good. but jesus god, i still get the shivers when i think about the awakenings fest set from 06. sooo varied and soooo fuckig ace.
