Can someone photoshop a review of this record onto one of those ads for pensioner laxatives?

I would say the Field LP is where "indie-trance" finally starts to get interesting.

COSIGN.

and again, what I was trying to get at above by pointing out all the other records which haven't worked for me, whilst seeming to kick at the same or similar goals. And YET it feels like slim pickings still... frustrating.

fandango, Monday, 26 March 2007 22:18 (seventeen years ago) link

They make laxatives specifically for retirees?

nabisco, Monday, 26 March 2007 22:20 (seventeen years ago) link

they make ads specifically aimed at them

Ronan, Monday, 26 March 2007 22:22 (seventeen years ago) link

way back in the 90s i went to an afterparty for the shamen and moby. everyone at the party was hugely e'd off their faces (except for moby) and one dude was doing this sort of shuffle-y i'm-not-really-here jog-in-place dance which became synonymous with that culture for me because the vibe in that place was so intense and spaceship and unforgettable. the field would make a nice soundtrack for a comedown from that.

tricky, Monday, 26 March 2007 22:23 (seventeen years ago) link

dudes i would have a few glasses of red zin with this music any day.

my favorite oblique strongo comment on minimal coffee table is CAT FANCY DISCOTHEQUE

tricky, Monday, 26 March 2007 22:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I have to say I see the Field as the delightful vino in this equation...at least relative to other ear candy.

Why don't these Field fans just go and listen to DJ Sammy? (besides Jess, who I know listens to DJ Sammy)

Ronan, Monday, 26 March 2007 22:31 (seventeen years ago) link

i am boggled by people who think this album demands being listened to closely! if anything it feels like it's meant to just wash over you or zone out to it. AMBIENT, PEOPLE, AMBIENT.

otm

lfam, Monday, 26 March 2007 22:35 (seventeen years ago) link

if you approach it as techno, it sucks, but as ambient, it's pretty pretty.

lfam, Monday, 26 March 2007 22:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I do agree with the ambient thing.

a better term for minimal might be "garbage disco"

strongohulkington, Monday, 26 March 2007 23:56 (seventeen years ago) link

but i kid

strongohulkington, Monday, 26 March 2007 23:59 (seventeen years ago) link

i'd say that the "no bass" and "ambient" are totally OTM, but can someone (Ronan?) explain how this is endemic to Kompakt's sound? I can only think of Kaito an' the Superpitcher MFA remix that mine this territory...

plus, the simple fact that phil condemns this album as repetitve endears it to no end for me.

Yes to be honest the idea that Kompakt spend all their time making indie-trance is one of those weird myths that sound totally correct as long as you don't stop and think about them at all.

lfam, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 01:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Well...Kompakt release so much that to say they spend all their time making any one thing would be unfair. But I think it's fair to say they've been hammering the indie-trance nail for a good while now, Mayer/Superpitcher as DJs and producers (especially Supermayer), Gui Boratto has definitely had his moments, several Speichers.

I mean seriously didn't anyone else cringe when reading the blurb for Tobias Thomas's mix with "LISTEN CLOSELY AND YOU'LL HEAR THE SMITHS AND THE WEDDING PRESENT". At this stage I'd be more shocked if they said "LISTEN CLOSELY AND YOU WON'T HEAR ANY BANDS THE PINEFOX LIKES REFERENCED", or "TOBIAS HAS HERE PAID HOMAGE TO THE WISTFUL RHYMES OF SNOOP DOGGY DOGG. TIP!"

Ronan, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 08:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I feel a LOT fonder about this if I think of it the same way I think about say Orbital's first full-length... but do any Kompakt artists actually make that kind of sudden leap in quality on their second albums (hell, apart from Kaito, Köhncke, Guentner... I'm struggling thru' unfamiliarity with their stuff) or just sideways moves/further refinements?

or maybe I'm just really feeling it tonight (and I much prefer most of this to that "not as good as the original" Superpitcher MFA remix Ronan posits as the endpoint we shouldn't maybe have gone beyond? there's just more "there" about this. more vibe.) funny album, sometimes it feels like nothing special sometimes all I want to hear... until I don't.

That weakass acid line (in fact mostly the whole track) in "The little heart..." really bugs me. I think if that, and "Silent" were just shortened drastically or otherwise made lesser/linking tracks... this would actually be pretty damn perfect tbh.

fandango, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 23:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Fandango that Superpitcher remix is one of the most amazing things ever!?!?

Tim F, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 23:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I agree with fandango on that actually. That Superpitcher remix leaves me cold for some reason, this doesn't ... usually.

lukas, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 23:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not sure if I can see eye to eye with anyone who doesn't say Tim OTM re: the Superpitcher remix.

With all the gushing praise for this, I wonder whether people are talking about "From Here We Go To Sublime" or the live mix that was floating around a while ago...i still loop the live mix over an' over again but the album has those clunkers that I can't stand already ("The Deal" guhhh).

BleepBot, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Do tell about this live mix and where it might be found. He said.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:20 (seventeen years ago) link

the deal sounds like panda bear or jane

lfam, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Does it help improve the image of this record if I say that hardcore Asian prog-house obsessives who have completist collections of John Digweed mixes (and there are a LOT of these people in Singapore) love it?

I mean seriously, the whole "indie guys like it so it must suck" is just the stupidest ilm trope of all time...

J@cob, Friday, 30 March 2007 10:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Jacob I think the trope is "indie guys will hail it as the best dance record of the year without bothering to listen to any of the others". Which may or may not be accurate but at least get the objection right.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 March 2007 10:39 (seventeen years ago) link

my trope is "IT IS CRAP", coupled with "plus it is getting hyped to bejesus at the moment".

Ronan, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:05 (seventeen years ago) link

thats my stance on all the other non-speicher kompakt releases. but not on this one! go axel!

fies, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I like it a lot. You can all feel free to stop liking it now. I won't mind.
