I will continue to defend the Killers. Saw them live, enjoyed it lots. However MarkH OTM re: "Glamourous Indie Rock n' Roll" - if their next album is a bunch of songs like that, I will be forced to smash the CD underneath my boot and place the shards of plastic in the toilet and FLUSH. What WERE they thinking? Strangely, though it looks like they left that track off the U.S. version of the album. So someone must have had a sense of quality control.

If you don't appreciate the Killers you have cloth in your ears. Especially if you like Moz or Smiths at all and you don't appreciate them then as far as I'm concerned you have some serious explaining to do. Seriously, Moz aside, what worries me is the idea that the corporate media machine is putting cloth in people's ears to the point that they are rendered UNABLE TO GRASP THE SIMPLE, REFRESHING DELIGHT OF THE KILLERS. What does this say about the future of music? If by some insane miracle, another John, George, Paul & Ringo appeared at our door, would we all just be too cynical, too deaf to hear it? Not that I'm trying to compare the Killers to Beatles, that's not what I'm getting at. What I am getting at is this: If a Killer falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

AND THE ANSWER IS YES IT DOES, BECAUSE THE TEENAGERS KNOW. EVEN IF YOU DON'T. AND TEENAGERS RULE THE WORLD.

I *do* appreciate the Killers and like the album as I said before, but at the same time I am puzzled and frustrated by its inconsistency. Maybe it's one of those albums which demonstrates the importance of putting the tracksin a sensible order, which is something you only notice when ppl get it wrong, as clearly the Killers have. The most upbeat immediate tracks are all at the beginning! Couldn't they have spaced them out?!

Brandon's vox are so varied on the album - ok, so he sounds just like Le Bon on "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine", but on "Mr Brightside" he starts by sounding just like the person who sings on Underworld's "Born Slippy" only to transmogrify into Midge Ure. Which does beg the question - should we applaud him for his vocal range and ability to adopt different styles of singing, or criticize him for cynically trying to win over ppl who have fond memories of those records of the past?

Incidentally, "Smile Like You Mean It" seems to be the musical equivalent of one of those used cars which get mentioned on consumer programmes sometimes which are actually bits of two cars welded together. The synth lines on it are superb and sound exciting, but the vocals on the chorus are rather tired sounding and heading distressingly in the direction of stadium rock.

I'm not exactly sure how Hot Fuss is getting so much praise as an album. There's some great standout tracks, but it's wholly inconsistant. I really want to like them as a band, but I don't hear much to be excited about. And I'm guessing that the first single off their second album will probably be another "Walk Idiot Walk" which doesn't get nearly as much attention as their first album singles.

I saw them on SNL and started remembering back when I listend to early-mid 90s alterna and tried to look for "meaning" in lyrics that were all the same strung-together mildly impressionistic random poetryesqe junk with the same dull metaphors and words over and over.

I think I might've ran into Brandon Flowers one time at a Duran concert. A Duran concert from back in ca. 2000, i.e. very probably pre-Killers days, so it doesn't count as a "celeb" sighting so much as a "pre-celeb" one. We smiled at each other in the "yeah, I know, the whole line thing is a bitch but hey, we can commiserate with each other" sorta way.

Actually, chances are very good it *was* Brandon -- the guy looked pretty much exactly like the Brandon still up above from the "Mr. Brightside" video, and he himself vouched for the fact that he attended at least one of the Vegas concerts during the Pop Trash tour, so, um, yeah.

The Killers just don't do it for me, I don't know why. I don't hear the Duran Duran comparisons but then again, I wasn't all that excited about new Duran Duran either. It's good to see Roger Taylor still holding up after all these years. He was always my favorite.

The Killers didn't tour with Morrissey: they opened for him once or twice. He put "Jenny was a Friend of mine" on his NME Songs that Saved Your Life CD though, ha ha. Over Christmas I was in the car with my sister listening to what used to be the alterna-station WHFS and this guy was moaning and my sister said what's that and I said, I think . . . it's the Killers. It was and my sister was impressed with my youth-cred. I then heard the the same song every hour on the hour. And it was like #8 on their Top 99.1 songs of the year. So I realized, I guess they have made it big in America (I thought they were gonna be yet another NME-band. That station (I read yesterday) has just rolled over to become Latin Pop. Apparently Brandon F was a bellhop in Vegas and secretly went into Bono's bag to lift an album demo from him: as their were no vocals he didn't copy it for his friends. I don't understand though . . . how are they any worse than any other new hot young band on the cover of NME?

I was just using The Hives as an example because, to the best of my knowledge, it's the most recent example of radio ignoring the first single off the follow-up record. I could have said "My Favourite Game" by The Cardigans I guess..

They are fixated on early 80s pop/new wave, that's for sure. I just listened to Hot Fuss for the 1st time this morning and heard steals from the Cure, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, and even Erasure. I think Placebo was doing all of this stuff way, way better in 1998.

I heard/saw them for the very first time Saturday night on the SNL rerun. I don't know Shed 7, I can hear Duran and Ultravox, but mostly I thought they sounded like The Fixx!

"Human" was bad enough, but WTF is this second song? Is it about mad scientists or alien abduction or something?

Also, I never realized it until now with these big Jim Steinman-type productions, but Brandon Flowers sounds a lot like Meatloaf.
