gah. I think i'm just gonna start using yr

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 19 March 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Flame" should have gone top 40 too, but America was done with its indie fascination by that point.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 19 March 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

classic, in the way a cheese sandwich in a plastic bag that you accidentally sat on still tastes like a cheese sandwich and is even the best thing you've ever tasted when you're hungry.

don't ask me to elaborate as it doesn't make sense to me either!

latebloomer: damn cheapskate satanists (latebloomer), Saturday, 19 March 2005 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

well "Natural One" was on a major, not Sub Pop. And was a buzz clip. As was less than a buck. And I doubt a lot of people who bought it knew who Sebadoh were.

(x-post)

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 19 March 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Sebadoh on Top of The Tops was a good night (the same night that had Jarvis Cocker & The All Seeing I doing "Walk Like A Panther"!)

Classic, if for nothing else, the ludicrous version of I Am The Resurrection that they played at the Manchester Hop & Grape back 1999.

carson dial (carson dial), Saturday, 19 March 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Flame" was the beneficiary of a brief Sire/Sub Pop alliance, so it was technically a major label release as well. But yr right... I don't think it had its own proper single, and if it did, it was barely played on MTV.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 19 March 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

the video was ugly too

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 19 March 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Ocean" got played a decent bit on the local alt-radio station but I saw the video only once or twice on MTV

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 19 March 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

and that video had its share of not-ready-for-top-40 visuals itself (funny as they were)

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 19 March 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

New Barlow is prob. my 3rd favorite Seb-related disc after III and Bubble and Scrape

southern lights, Saturday, 19 March 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Stopped following them a long time ago. Did he ever write any songs as good as "The Freed Pig" on III again?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 19 March 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

the first four songs on bakesale are better than the freed pig

leroy, Saturday, 19 March 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I will always love Sebadoh for a gig they played here in Dallas -- to about 25 people -- on the way home from SXSW (just a few years ago). Instead of half-assing it and finishing up early, they joked around and played for HOURS, and they did every song you might've wanted to hear (including Gimme Indie Rock). One of my fave shows ever.

Aaron A., Saturday, 19 March 2005 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"Natural One"! I haven't thought about that song in ages. "I can't have it cause I act like I want it." "Freed Pig" is still brilliant after all these years, dripping with bittersweetness.

Sara Sherr, Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

classic all the way. no point explaining, i have virtually everything the man breathed onto tape, but i figured another tick in the C column was needed.

For a second I thought that was Lou

miccio (miccio), Monday, 21 March 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

classic, definitely. jason loewenstein's solo effort is worth a listen too. what did "flame" sound like though? was it the theme tune to the big breakfast or something?

bg, Monday, 21 March 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven months pass...

was gonna a start a thread like this because i've been listening to a fair bit of sebadoh lately and i'd have to say CLASSIC. if you put a best of sebadoh cd together it could easily fill 2cds with all killer tracks (they did have a lot of filler on thier lps though).

that said, the new lou barlow is bad. saw him play live acoustic and it was painful, he's kinda a chubby and obviously still very awkward quasi-juvenile and he's pushing 40, no?

what ever happened to eric gaffeney any way?

Ben H (Ben H), Thursday, 2 March 2006 21:41 (twenty years ago)

The epitome of indie blandness, to my ears.

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 2 March 2006 22:04 (twenty years ago)

classic.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 2 March 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

gaffney lives in the bay area, rocks out in a band called fields of gaffney.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 2 March 2006 22:21 (twenty years ago)

It's funny. I used to not be a fan of Sebadoh. I didn't hate them, but I didn't care much for what I heard. Then I listened to one of those radio station "live performances" CDs which included Lou Barlow playing an acoustic version of "Skull." I loved it, and somehow things just clicked in place for me. I checked out those singles like "Rebound" and "Ocean" that I didn't like before, and now I thought they were terrific. I can't explain it, exactly. I guess as a person ages they can hear music in a different way in different circumstances. Unlike most Sebadoh fans (I'm presuming), I had to work backwards, from Harmacy to the Homestead records.

And I'll second the nod for Jason Loewenstein's solo record on Sub Pop. It is terrific.

James, Thursday, 2 March 2006 22:22 (twenty years ago)

So, so classic, for so many reasons. Sebadoh III is still amazing to me -- it's such a crazy, heavy, disorienting trip, even after all this time.

Those early singles and 7" EPs are just totemic (like the "Oven Is Your Friend" EP on Siltbreeze, to name just one). I think Lou may have posted MP3s of a lot of that stuff on his website now.

Lou and Jason toured last year, and it was better than the last few tours by full-scale Sebadoh, since they seemed like they were relaxed and having fun.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 2 March 2006 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Make that "Oven Is My Friend" (guess it's not so totemic I couldn't get the title right).

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 2 March 2006 22:42 (twenty years ago)

if you put a best of sebadoh cd together it could easily fill 2cds with all killer tracks (they did have a lot of filler on thier lps though).

I agree. Definitely classic.

That stuff of the Magic Ribbons boxset just fries me. Never heard the Asshole 7" :(

sleeve (sleeve), Thursday, 2 March 2006 23:35 (twenty years ago)

I paid big bucks for a copy of "Asshole" on eBay awhile back -- then saw it later that week at the record store for $2.50! It had been reissued, hand-colored cover art and all! (So now I have, uh, two copies.)

Anyway, the Lou side of "Asshole" is now here: http://www.loobiecore.com/klassix.html

weird. a decent pitchfork review

i guess i'm one of the casual fans since bakesale's still my favorite. but what a monster album. the first five or six songs still slay

i went out and got a copy of the reissue. it sounds great. songs like "sacred attention" come close to what i like so much about bakesale

re: Sebadoh, C/D

to echo the original poster:

Being the Dinosaur Jr. fan that I am, I have to say NOT classic.

stephen, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

well then you REALLY wouldn't like the b&s bonus tracks. there's a four-part noise suite called "old daze" with lou and jason each taking a part, and eric taking two

kamerad, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

and by part you mean tab of acid.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

tabs in the ocean

kamerad, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

I prefer Jason to Lou, and I like The Sebadoh a lot, so I'm probably not the best person to ask.

I just read that Bubble And Scrape review this morning.. enjoyed it quite a bit.. The 2008 reissue disc has been in my car CD player for 5 days straight which is unusual for me.

the drumming (on the *1*), the searing guitar/bass levels (esp on the chorus/outro)...

that's got to be a hollowbody guitar?

Anyone into III? I got heavily into that record, it was a portal for me to a whole universe of music I had not known before.

I decided to see them in concert around that time. I remember traveling 200 kilometers by train and arranging a bed and breakfast in a strange city for me when I was 17 or so, to see them. I was alone because I didn't know anyone who knew them. Massive experience, two days skipping Uni and solely focussed on seeing the mighty Sebadoh. Boy did Barlow fuck that up haha. He had a cold and two songs in he started shouting and cursing the audience in typical Barlow-style, telling the audience to fuck off, and he walked off stage. Took a while before he was back. I remember being shocked although the reaction of the other band members (mere shrugs) was strangely comforting. When he came back on they raced through a 40 minute set and that was that. And I still thought it was pretty good! Haha.

Still love III, and most other records. I have no idea what Barlow is up to nowadays.

La descente infernale (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 19 March 2011 10:54 (fifteen years ago)

I saw Lou and Jason a couple of years ago in Holland, during a reunion tour or something. One of the worst shows I've ever seen. In between the first few songs, Lou drank a whole bottle of red wine, and got drunk immediately. It was so embarrassing to look at that I didn't listen to their albums for a few years.

But despite that ugly memory I have to say CLASSIC.

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 19 March 2011 12:55 (fifteen years ago)

My experience was in Holland also, but years before. Wine-experience seems pretty much the same though ;-) (there were two or three already openend bottles standing ready at Lou's disposal if memory serves me right)

I love Eric Gaffney's stuff on III, especially the last song, lol

Master of Treacle, Saturday, 19 March 2011 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't heard a note after Bubble & Scrape, but up to then it was all amazing (B&S itself is patchy). III is one of my desert island discs.

Geez that record is 20? I saw them when it came out opening for the Flaming Lips, and even back then Lou was lamenting that everybody hated the record.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 2 March 2019 00:58 (seven years ago)

I never saw sebadoh perform. Was at a show but lou jumped off the stage and walked out before performing. I remember walking home from that show and just smiling. Lol

nathom, Saturday, 2 March 2019 12:51 (seven years ago)

I saw them a few times, but the best (by far) was in the mid-2000s — just Lou & Jason, plus a tape recorder with drum tracks for some songs. They were excellent, the crowd was way into it... it was just “one of those shows.” (I remember a tough-looking guy with a ponytail standing next to me, looking up at the stage and shouting along to every word of one of the songs from “Oven Is My Friend.”)

yuh yuh (morrisp), Saturday, 2 March 2019 19:34 (seven years ago)

Btw — that new song isn’t bad (just watched the video). I found some of the my-side-of-the-story divorced-dad content of Defend Yourself to be a little cringeworthy (think I actually preferred Jason’s songs on that one); but I’m always up for a new Sebadoh LP, no matter how corny Lou’s soul-bearing may become with age.

yuh yuh (morrisp), Saturday, 2 March 2019 22:18 (seven years ago)

I loved Bob D'Amico's song on Defend Yourself:

So what do y'all think of Act Surprised? I think it's good, though the sound's a little muddy, and Lou's lyrics are somewhat cringe-y (as they tend to be lately).

Saw Lou on his recent solo tour and it was a dream come true for a mega-fan like me. Nearly 3 hours of requests in a yoga studio to a knowledgeable crowd of 25. Have only heard the 2 singles from Act Surprised and it's not for me. I wish them boundless success though. Would love to hear others' thoughts on the album.

aging goth couple™ (morrisp), Thursday, 15 July 2021 23:36 (four years ago)

morris I thought your comment on the other thread about how the "whole" early Sebadoh-as-band picture was scattered across a bunch of different releases was very accurate, speaking as someone who was a big fan at the time they were putting that stuff out. and all those Vertical 7"s were such limited collector scum nonsense that you could only get those as tape trades. and yeah, I treasure my Magic Ribbons box, especially for the great Unrest song "Headringer" that (I think) is still not reissued in any form.

sleeve, Thursday, 15 July 2021 23:39 (four years ago)

so many times back then, you'd see an indie single in the new bins and if you didn't get it then you never saw it again

(looking at you, "Oven Is My Friend" 7")

sleeve, Thursday, 15 July 2021 23:40 (four years ago)

I still have not heard the last LP, I don't think. I did see the reunion tour which I was psyched about at the time but cannot remember a single thing about now.

xxp “Headringer” is on Twister! I don’t know offhand if it’s the same version, though… Knowing Unrest, it may not be!

aging goth couple™ (morrisp), Friday, 16 July 2021 00:01 (four years ago)

ha I was wondering about that! I have the CDR reissue of that, will check

sleeve, Friday, 16 July 2021 00:08 (four years ago)

These guys were one of the 'big (ha)' indie rock bands I never saw live back in the day. Heard it was usually a mix bag. Only time they played B-ton back when I was going to lots of shows, I was out of town. I heard they switched instruments a couple times.

Sebadoh III and Smash Yr Head always get a smile out of me when I put them on half crocked on whisky and beer about once every 2-3 years or so.

Red Red Meat were cool as heck live the couple times I saw them though. And Railroad Jerk too!

earlnash, Friday, 16 July 2021 01:30 (four years ago)

All those bands the better the production got, they got all SERIOUS on their songwriting. They were ALL generally better when they were just stoned noisy weirdos. Kind of the rocknroll equivalent of people getting better looking as the series went on on sitcoms as they finally got dough and a stylist or something.

earlnash, Friday, 16 July 2021 01:32 (four years ago)

Barlow was def more “careerist” than many in terms of gamely cleaning up his sound / polishing his songwriting; but Sebadoh never made it onto a major (he did with Folk Implosion though).

aging goth couple™ (morrisp), Friday, 16 July 2021 01:39 (four years ago)

(I need to read that article about the 1999 Sebadoh album; that was released under some awkward partnership Sub Pop had with Sire at the time.)
