― barman's bar mitz (unregistered), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 03:26 (twelve years ago) link
the new song search really really sucks though. before today, if you did a song search for "cuckoo", you could click on a specific song title (like "the cuckoo") and see a list of all the artists who performed it, and you could sort by artist and composer. it was useful if you wanted to track down cover versions. now you just get a long, disorganized list of artist and song titles with no way to separate songs titled "the cuckoo" from "a cuckoo" from "your new cuckoo". I really hope they fix that. it's a huge blow to the functionality of the site.

feh. red, white and black color scheme is ugly, and there doesn't seem to have been any attention given to highlighting the most important features on each page. if you jump to discography from the main artist's page, you see a list of albums. only if you were to very carefully look around the page would you notice the unobtrusive, grey-on white tabs up top for "compilations" and "singles & EPs". that's just bad design. and unregistered's complaint about the new song search otm. what, i'm supposed to scroll through all 25,000 songs with the word "tomorrow" in the title individually to find the one i want?

no it wasn't. like I was trying to say out upthread, it used to be that when you searched for something like "girl" + "yesterday", a list of song titles would come up, and when you clicked on "the girl from yesterday", for instance, you'd be able to see all the artists who recorded that song. now you just get an undifferentiated list of songs with "girl" and "yesterday" in the title. in the title, and you can't sort it by songwriter or title. it's completely different.
one improvement I noticed, though, is that they merged the Works and Discography listings for classical artists. before there'd be two separate entries for John Cage — one with his compositions and one with his releases — but now you can access them from the same page.
also the buttons to stream the songs are bigger, which is good.
overall they seemed to have optimized the site for clickthroughs to spotify and itunes and rdio, but it's hardly more useful as a research tool (not that it was ever perfect).

^i guess i never searched in this manner, i always just type in the song title, and that works the same as it did before.
as they should, the site has to make money and i don't find it obnoxious at all

of course i can see it. i see those tabs because i know to look for them, being familiar with the site's basic design from years of use. i can't imagine that a not-particularly-internet-savvy first time user, however, would even think that these options might be available. there's nothing in the page design that draws attention to the fact that you're initially seeing only a portion of the discography. in fact, the elements that might draw attention instead seem to have been intentionally designed to evade immediate notice.
― spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 21:10 (twelve years ago) link
xxpost but it doesn't work the same as it did before (contenderizer otm)! the sorting feature may not have been something that everyone cared about, but I don't see the need to get rid of a useful tool.
I don't think it's obnoxious that Rovi is trying to make money; just pointing it out.

there's nothing in the page design that draws attention to the fact that you're initially seeing only a portion of the discography.
compilations, singles & EPs, and dvds were separated from the main album in the exact same manner in the previous design

it used to be that when you searched for something like "girl" + "yesterday", a list of song titles would come up, and when you clicked on "the girl from yesterday", for instance, you'd be able to see all the artists who recorded that song.
to clarify, if in the past, you wanted to find a song called something like "spongy mountain" (or maybe it was "mountain of sponge" or something, i dunno), you'd type "spongy mountain" into the search, and it would cough up something like this:
Spongy Mountain - 177My Spongy Mountain - 118Spongy Mountains - 32Mountaintop Sponge - 4Spongiform M - 1I Had a Sponge - 1Mountain Spot - 1
you'd click on a phrase, and it would show you a list of all the performers of songs with that specific title. very handy for tracking down songs whose title you only half-remembered, also for researching variations on a phrase and/or titles involving specific words.
using the current version of the song search function, however, you'd get all 334 results, unsorted and unsortable, 20 at a time, so that you'd maybe have to go through 17 pages to find that one version of "mountaintop sponge" you were looking for.
― spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 21:22 (twelve years ago) link
good page design should draw attention to what is useful, and minimize distractions. this design makes useful functions unobtrusive and draws attention to junk.
