That review makes it sound pretty killer -- arena rock! Quite honestly, I would not be as interested if it simply described more raga/drone/free jazz experimentation.

last time I Chris Corsano - with Flower, i think - I kept thinking, 'any second now he's gonna drop into some straight up heavy rock beat', but of course it never happened.

saw ben and the bish performing together at a ATP a few years back, they were def on a classic rock tip then

corsano = a free drummer who is young enough to have the power/stamina/dexterity of someone like rashied ali in his prime - i've seen him play w/ flaherty/moore/o'rourke, matthew bower, heather leigh murray and he always rules - don't think hes ever worked w/ zorn, tho

There is one full track and a collage thing up on the myspace now, people. Sounds pretty much like the best thing ever, as expected. Chasny and RB trading leads over Corsano's polyrhythmic scatter, other portions reminding me of 'Juggernaut' almost making me well up. So psyched. And 'Freak of Araby' was such an underrated album I feel, totally righteous in its simplicity and purity of intent, I love it. And this is a band that surely has enormous live potential: if these guys don't make it to Europe I'm going to start my own booking agency! Was a real scandal that the Araby band tour was called off due to 'lack of interest'.

yeah, I did not go to many shows this year, but would've gone to see the Freak of Araby live show if they came through my neck of the woods ...

xp - European tour called off - US tour happened, and was quite extensive, and from what I heard, grueling.

this might be my record of the year so far! i haven't heard a lot of new records, I'll admit, but it is pretty awesome. They should just get together and record an album every couple of months.

I got the promo this week!
It's pretty damn good.
Highlight is definitely the fifteen minute mellow closer, Plain of Jars. Kind of an Ex-Cocaine vibe on that song.
I'll be looking for it on vinyl once it's out, for sure.
Definitely had me thinking of Sun City Girls, but it has its own merits, for sure.

yeah, i think the closer is my fave as well, though some of the more abrasive/heavier stuff is great too. they really sound like they are abusing their amps on some of these! in a good way.

They are playing in a hella cute wooden church in my locale in a bit less than a month and I have active expectations of it ruling

I'm majorly pumped that this 3'o got together. They're all amazing intuitive musicians with the capability to blow minds. Corsano's work w/ Flaherty, Flaherty/Yeh, David Grubbs, Flower, Jandek, and others is mostly all unfuckwithable.

I missed the first time they played here. Hopefully they announce a tour in the US soon.

i hope they do a euro tour too. on a sidenote, anyone heard the new album on esp corsano did with paul dunmall?

I dunno, I like this new one as much as the first one. There's a lot more of the 'surf raga' / Torch Of The Mystics-type stuff happening on this one. I thought the second album was just ok, but this one got me back on the horse

having a hard time parsing this w/r/t a band that made a career out of extremes, check out Dawn Of The Devi or Djinn Funnel or Bright Surroundings if u want dense Rangda type sound

yeah I finally got Heretic's Bargain on LP and it is fantastic, but it's hard for me to articulate just what it is that made the previous one more disappointing - no wild parts? out of all the long epics I like "Hermetic Museum" the most, lots of variation and texture.

has anyone heard the live 10"? are the versions different enough that it's worth getting?

Man I haven't even heard the actual release/album yet, need to get on that.

I know, I felt like I was totally late to it as well! A lot more surf guitar bouncy action and there's a pretty awesome 8-minute freakout with a long fadeout ending ("Hard Times Befall The Door-To-Door Glass Shard Salesman")

was just listening to david grubbs' new one and there are actually some pretty rangda-y moments on the tracks with drummer eli keszler

I haven't checked in on a Grubbs thing in forrrever. Mirror Repair remains one of my favorite records of the 90s.
