It's true. Cory from Threelobed just posted it to twitter.

krakow, Saturday, 5 December 2009 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

Totally unexpected and terrible news.

krakow, Saturday, 5 December 2009 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

Awful. RIP.

That sucks - I've met him a few times and he was a really great awesome guy, in addition to being a great musician. The last time I saw him, there was this drunk dude heckling him, but I'm not remembering the details of it right now.

sarahel, Saturday, 5 December 2009 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

This is fucking terrible news.

Duke, Saturday, 5 December 2009 22:54 (sixteen years ago)

sorry for the random update, but Three Lobed Recordings is extremely
sad to pass along news that our dear friend Jack Rose passed away this
morning in Philadelphia at the age of 38. This news is still fresh to
us and we're still trying to process it. Jack was a warm, caring
person and was always a pleasure to be around. His larger than life
spirit will truly, truly be missed even moreso than his inspired
musical ability. Our deepest sorrow goes out to his wife.

Rest in peace, Jack.

38! fuck me.

Duke, Saturday, 5 December 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

That's fucking miserable. Going to jam some of those records tonight for sure.

ian, Saturday, 5 December 2009 23:03 (sixteen years ago)

couldnt believe it when that email arrived

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 5 December 2009 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

this sucks, just saying that again.

sleeve, Saturday, 5 December 2009 23:18 (sixteen years ago)

Lord, I just saw a retweet from 3 Lobed about this. Hard to get my head around. Dude was barely a month older than I was.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 5 December 2009 23:55 (sixteen years ago)

geez, 38! i guess we're lucky to have gotten all the great music from him while he was here, but you can't help but think he had a lot left to give ...

tylerw, Saturday, 5 December 2009 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

now playing: Pelt "Ayahuasca"

I'm 5 years older than he was...

sleeve, Sunday, 6 December 2009 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

just played "Dr. Ragtime" -- such great, open-hearted stuff ...

tylerw, Sunday, 6 December 2009 00:03 (sixteen years ago)

I saw him pestered by a heckler to play "Kensington Blues" over and over at an instore at the old location of The True Vine in Baltimore and eventually he played it, with great humor and force and compassion. A great musician and a life-force. As I understand it through the grapevine, the heckler was a troubled guy who died not too long ago of a drug overdose, and now Jack's dead too.

I can't believe he's dead at 38. Jeez, I'm 38.

Opium music & knob creek at the Johnson estate this evening. RIP Jack. That was some awful oatmeal we ate, but you sure seemed to love it.

jamming cathedral et chartres at top volume - fuck the neighbors...

sknybrg, Sunday, 6 December 2009 04:59 (sixteen years ago)

Really really fucking depressed about this. An obsessive alchemical giant. Chatted with him (and Pelt) for hours in the parking lot of Spaceland after a post Terrastock 2 gig. Gave me a hug for releasing the Last Days Of May album.

Going to hoist a pint or three.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 6 December 2009 06:32 (sixteen years ago)

A phenomenal talent. Really sad about this. My wine bottle is nearing its bottom and I've played Pearls from the River and Skullfuck and Raag Manifestos and the Archive live album and onward we go...

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Sunday, 6 December 2009 06:42 (sixteen years ago)

Jesus this is ridiculous, RIP

Jack Rose really isn't in the category of musicians you are a bit scared to open a bumped thread about because you think it might tell you they're dead

shocking. rip.

rizzx, Sunday, 6 December 2009 10:32 (sixteen years ago)

Horrible news. Obv bummed that I didn't go and see him in Glasgow a cpl of week ago, now.

Ward Fowler, Sunday, 6 December 2009 10:34 (sixteen years ago)

Oh shit, terrible news, I'm 3 years older than he was! Saw him in London 2 or 3 years ago - he got a wonderful growling tone out of his guitar but still played with subtlety and emotion, without lapsing into sentimentality. Seemed like a cool guy too, I'm quite upset about this actually. RIP

the most awful news. loved pelt for ages, the solo stuff even more. didn't know him personally, but still terribly saddened by this. my heart goes out to his family & friends, to all here who apparently knew him well.

very sad news. i saw jack a couple years ago but i was hoping to see pelt in my lifetime

RIP

Kate 'Impeach' Bush (Future_Perfect), Monday, 7 December 2009 16:11 (sixteen years ago)

I was lucky enough to see Pelt with Jack at the Terrastock 2 show you can hear on Empty Bell Ringing in the Sky -- it was and is one of the highlights of my showgoing life, one huge long track that was utterly mesmerizing, and the recording by default just can't capture the full impact of it.

Both Pelt and, separately, Jack played at the last Terrastock, in Jack's case with the Black Twig Pickers. Weird that I'll only ever see one of them again now.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 7 December 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)

where was this anyway? turf club?

global tetrahedron, Friday, 16 September 2016 16:03 (nine years ago)

been heavy into this lately & absolutely loving it, esp his ragtime/old timey stuff has gone from being my least to most favourite. some combination of playing/thumbpick/micing on kensington blues makes the bass on tracks like flirtin with the undertaker bludgeon the song to death a bit, but dr ragtime & his pals sounds awesome and is pure joy

really enjoyed the remembrances, the points about his craftsmanship & attention to sonic details are very otm, and the bachman stuff in particular is v sweet and chimes with my starry-eyed memories of meeting jack

also just want to bask in this magnificent sentence again:

His ragtime songs were so powerful and executed with such precision and might that even “hipsters” got it.

the stuff about him 'owning' everything he did rang true, and makes me think more about how confidently and fruitfully he followed fahey, thriving in his shadow, following him upriver deep into the mountains in such of the source. watching some of his performances on youtube it's incredible how much he looks & dresses like fahey, as if his quest had started transformed him physically, presumably starting at that mighty right hand. and yeah, it's great to hear sundogs again, was a truly awesome piece to hear

ogmor, Thursday, 22 September 2016 19:10 (nine years ago)

I could live inside of "Sundogs".

grandavis, Thursday, 22 September 2016 20:19 (nine years ago)

Seeing this thread has made me dig out Two Originals Of... God but Mountaintop Lamento is beautiful. Think I might put Effigy on next and go run around in the woods in a bear suit.

two years pass...

Nine years.

Great story:

“Yeah I got Terry Reilly records, man - at home, where ya listen to that kind of stuff. I’m trying get people to buy beers here!” - Jack Rose to Jeff Zeigler when the latter made a request while the former was DJ’ing at JBs. Relayed to me yesterday while mixing with JZ. RIP.
