cool.
Still figuring out this album. May take some time. One thought: bnc castl reminds me of Are People People - the insane Adrian Sherwood "mix" of People are People by Depeche Mode.
― ledge, Friday, 22 February 2008 12:03 (eighteen years ago)
there's a mix for MAH on Radio 1 tuesday night too.

12 hours!?

I only listened to the first hour or two, which was pretty much solid hip-hip/electro. Tuned in a while later to hear the somewhat obscure early Depeche Mode b-side "Now This Is Fun", which they also played on their 2005 webcast.
― ledge, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 10:16 (eighteen years ago)
fausting
lol

whole album is on their myspace page. I like it more than their last few so far.
― Hurting 2, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 13:03 (eighteen years ago)
loving this and i haven't liked anything of theirs in a while
― am0n, Friday, 29 February 2008 04:38 (eighteen years ago)

If whatever I've downloaded here is the new Autechre album, I'm very happy with it - but doesn't it sound different from everything else? Here I was, waiting for another bunch of ever-randomising clunkjams and here is something that's actually a lot of fun!
― the next grozart, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 23:16 (eighteen years ago)
haha, their myspace site looks totally fucked, but because it's autechre i can't tell if it's intentional or just normal myspace bullshit.
― Jordan, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 23:26 (eighteen years ago)
So the london gig was night was in a fucking car park. Roofed but a bit short on walls, only about half a dozen coats were in the cloakroom, it was so cold. And the bar didn't take cash, you had to buy tokens... which were sold in blocks of £10 minimum. Massive cuntitude. And no re-entry, which scuppered my plan of nipping out to a local boozer till they came on at 12.30am.
― ledge, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:10 (eighteen years ago)
were they any good, though?
― toby, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:16 (eighteen years ago)
The Guardian wasn't very impressed with their Newcastle show: http://music.guardian.co.uk/live/story/0,,2261916,00.html
― StanM, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:17 (eighteen years ago)
Blocking the background image helps.
― onimo, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:18 (eighteen years ago)
They weren't as headfucky as that review suggests. If you've seen them any time over the last ten years then they were pretty much the same, which is fine if you like that kind of thing. And I do. Really excellent rhythms, it felt like they'd invented half a dozen on the spot, never heard before and never to be heard again. Weird noises and screeches yes, but they rarely destroyed the groove. And definite old-skool ae melodies, strings and glockenspiels, bubbling underneath. Virtually all new as far as I could tell, only recognised a couple of melodic snippets from Quaristice.
Did start to feel a leeeedle bit samey about halfway through though.
― ledge, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:23 (eighteen years ago)
LOLs at ADM talk in Guardian review. Welcome to the 90s son.
Also LOLs at "their own music is scrambled and mashed-up beyond recognition. Vaguely danceable rhythms are suddenly destroyed by sonic screeches" coz everyone there was wanting the straight four to the floor of their last few LPs I guess.
― Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:26 (eighteen years ago)
Ooops, IDM not ADM. Dunno what ADM is--Autistic Dance Music I suppose.
― Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:27 (eighteen years ago)
ah but live cough idm cough, even ae, always has been more four to the floor and danceable than the records (which always led me to wonder exactly what records they were playing and how could i get them. never did figure it out.)
Support from Rob Hall (standard IDM dj set, see above) and SND, who played... just beats. No melodies. Virtually devoid of interesting rhythms, even. It reminded me of the standard complaints about ae - cold, abstract - but this lacked any of their complexity, it was totally transparent. Didn't do it for me at all.
― ledge, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:30 (eighteen years ago)
A good gig I think - I was entirely sober and yet completely lost track of time - seemed to last about five minutes, and I don't think I fell asleep. The wall of bass did get a bit much at times - submerged almost everything else. And yes, quite chilly. And a lot of people there could have done with a more recent bath or change of clothes.
― Kaliova, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:39 (eighteen years ago)
Err I was just listening to this morning's Today programme coverage of the US elections, and then Autechre came on afterwards!

"ah but live cough idm cough, even ae, always has been more four to the floor and danceable than the records."
Not when I've seen 'em really.
― Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:44 (eighteen years ago)
no wai! i set my alarm for an hour later 'cause i needed a bit more sleep after the gig, or i'd have heard that, and probably would have freaked me right out. now i'll have to install realplayer, hmph.
xp. well maybe not four to the floor as such, but more consistent and more danceable. imho i guess.
― ledge, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:54 (eighteen years ago)
The .ram file isn't actually what was broadcast, it's an extended version of the interview - the bit on the radio was shorter but had vox pops from last night etc.
― toby, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 14:09 (eighteen years ago)
"Tell us some of the more unusual sound effects you've used and what happens to them next"
"No"
― koogs, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 14:15 (eighteen years ago)
There was a fair bit to get down to when I saw them circa the last album, and the new one has some straight passages of electro-y stuff that I don't think people could consider onjectionably undanceable. Also not being a dick but I can't think of when Dave Simpson has ever expressed an interest in dance music (but I don't maintain davesimpson.xls or owt)
― DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 14:18 (eighteen years ago)
The first part of that extended version is awful, just clueless and irrelevant questions. She can't even pronounce the album names right!
xp to koogs yeah that was lol.
― ledge, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 14:25 (eighteen years ago)
If anyone wants to Listen Again to the short-form Ae interview on the Today prog itself, it starts around 7:42am (i.e. 1h42m into the clip).
― Michael Jones, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 16:48 (eighteen years ago)
this is painful!
― Crackle Box, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

Some ppl in GB got their ltd. ed metal box thingy! They're having trouble opening it! (lol) Maybe it's in my mail box at home! (next week probably, since I'm in Belgium)

you have something better to do?
― Creeztophair, Sunday, 6 April 2008 01:59 (eighteen years ago)
Definitely more enjoyable than listening to them in the dark.
― Leee, Sunday, 6 April 2008 02:05 (eighteen years ago)
This is great, far less oblique but still very mindfuckingly them. Insiduous and great. Hussar!
― Mister Craig, Sunday, 6 April 2008 11:28 (eighteen years ago)
Best thing they've done since EP7.
― the next grozart, Monday, 7 April 2008 14:47 (eighteen years ago)
So I heard this for the first time yesterday.
Well, I didn't like it.
I think my Autechre days are well and truly over.
