According to the NME, but nowhere else I have ever seen, Bernard Butler was caught on TV in the crowd at Princess Di's funeral, in floods of tears.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 5 March 2004 10:28 (twenty years ago) link

Johnny Cash was a convicted murderer.

add to the stomach-pump line-up:

a ho-humly boy george yes yes zzz, but also (mixing in company WAY above his sleb station surely) kirk brandon (ie of theatre of hate and spear of destiny)

disclaimer: i was already a working rock journalist when i heard these sub-variants

mark s (mark s), Friday, 5 March 2004 11:15 (twenty years ago) link

After I left school I knew someone who knew someone who knew Kirk Brandon and she told me that he and Boy George were a couple at one point.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:50 (twenty years ago) link

The person who someone you knew knew, was telling the truth.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:39 (twenty years ago) link

He called me a Diamond Geezer, one time.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:41 (twenty years ago) link

Please don;t tell me you used to follow ToH about too Mark?!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:53 (twenty years ago) link

According to the NME, but nowhere else I have ever seen, Bernard Butler was caught on TV in the crowd at Princess Di's funeral, in floods of tears.

That's actually true, but he wasn't on TV. I went with my friends to watch the hearse go up Finchley Road by the Camden Arts Centre after the funeral, and when we were walking back to my friend's house we walked past him and Mrs. Bernard, who both looked upset. I'm sure I told someone from the paper about it, or some PR I'd spoken to must have done. Oddly, one of the friends I was with got chased by Saul the Suede A&R for a year around that time.

Kirk/George = original Goodge Place squatters. If you were Blitz or Taboo you knew people who lived there. They were a deux for a while, but KB tried to injunct against people who reported this for YEARS.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:59 (twenty years ago) link

No, it was a pro/am Karaoke evening at "Up the creek". Myself and a girl friend (but not...) as contestants amongst various other. I did "Daydream believer", she did "Pearl's a singer" while riding a kiddies ride type horse. Kirk was one of the judges. My backing track was too high so I sang it sub-basso and it sounded worse than metallica. Kirk's reasoned response was "Mark Grout... Diamond Geezer... What went wrong?" The eventual winner was Wattie out of the Exploited (in civvies) doing "I'm doing it all for my baby" (Huey Lewis song (his baby is 3 years old etc...)

Umm, is that a strange acid flashback hallucination? Actually, no that all happened for real...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:59 (twenty years ago) link

Kirk Brandon was one of the judges for "a pro/am Karaoke evening"?

Wattie out of The Exploited was one of the contestants and performed a Huey Lewis song?

Mark, I have to believe that was a strange acid flashback hallucination or the foundations of my entire universe may begin to crumble beneath me!

Next you'll be trying to tell me that Jaz Coleman of Killing Joke has produced and conducted orchestral arrangements of selected pieces by Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and is now the Composer in Residence of the Auckland Philharmonic!

No.... wait....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:07 (twenty years ago) link

The whole tale is 100% true and no exaggeration.

Bob Mortimer was chatting to a bloke I now recognise as Sean Hughes, upstairs in the 'restaurant'. I had to make the girl I was with promise not to try to shag him if I told her where they were, when I told her...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:11 (twenty years ago) link

I really hope photos of this event survive...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago) link

Well, I would have taken a camera if i'd known what kind of evening ....

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:24 (twenty years ago) link

I've already told you my Cure story and my Gary Numan story haven't I?

OK then, how about this one:

Dave Gahan once (early 80's) gave me £20 to put his coat on and run out of the front of Robot in the Kings Road, effectively acting as a decoy so he could escape a crowd of fans (I was about the same height / build / colouring as him and had a similar haircut in those days).

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:33 (twenty years ago) link

I was told the same pump story here in France in the 80's, but this time it involved Jimmy Sommerville... I guess it's some kind of modern equivalent to the ancient storie about the flood. So it has to be true for all of these :

elton john
rod stewart
marc almond
billy idol
fine young canibals
one of Bros.
'lil kim
ricky martin
jewel
Lil Kim
Jimmy Sommerville

snowballing, Friday, 5 March 2004 15:46 (twenty years ago) link

I hadn't seen those, no. The girl I mentioned above was a real numanoid nut (she showed me the photos...). I've lost touch with her now. Obv I remember the imfamous "Star".. Prontaprint nowadays... (Ahh Friends Pizza -> Purple Turtle bar -> pile of rubble on the floor -> snob restaurant (bad food and aggressive chefs and nervous waiters)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:48 (twenty years ago) link

hahahaha Mark, trust me, a trip upstairs would not have been worth her while. Bob Mortimer's a bit of a sexist prannet and Sean's got issues - the same issues as every man who can't get a shag until his name's in lights has, and takes it out on the women he dates as if it's their fault. Once upon a time, I had occasion to inform him that this strategy was DEEPLY unattractive. Subsequently he tried to chat up one of my close friends at her book launch, but backed off when I showed him the red card for doing so.

Also Mark, I know a certain UK-based, US-born female music writer who shagged Gary Numan (scary scary scary and no, it wasn't me)

suzy (suzy), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:52 (twenty years ago) link

Well, Sean wasn't famous then but ms. Name Withheld would still have... (If bob wasn't playing).

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:54 (twenty years ago) link

The US writer... She wasn't in that infamous 'tape'?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:55 (twenty years ago) link

No, think Bay City Rollers....

suzy (suzy), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:58 (twenty years ago) link

... ?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:59 (twenty years ago) link

I really shouldn't say anything more as she is friendly acquaintance of mine who writes for cough cough the lefty paper. There are enough clues for you to work out who she is!

suzy (suzy), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:02 (twenty years ago) link

I know several Reading-based people who've shagged Mr Numan!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:05 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, that was a 'who' clue rather than a 'what happened' clue?

(We talking a book published?)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:06 (twenty years ago) link

He actually married a (somewhat obsessive, from what I've heard) female fan didn't he?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:14 (twenty years ago) link

so that's where she went!

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:15 (twenty years ago) link

We are talking a book published. About the Bay City Rollers. Written by said journalist.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:21 (twenty years ago) link

< searches Amazon.... > ummmm.... Ray Coleman?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:24 (twenty years ago) link

Mencap, if you add 'based on her teenage experiences stalking the group' maybe Stewart will get it.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:45 (twenty years ago) link

Gary Numan met his wife some years after her obsessive schooldays fandom but she still liked him and all. And they are indeed still happily married and have a baby boy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago) link

I saw her being interviewed on telly once a few years back and she was saying stuff like "I always knew I'd end up married to Gary one day" - and I was thinking: "Uh huh? Really? Really? Is that right? How fascinating" OK, now don't turn 'round, don't run or make any sudden movements, just keep eye contact and back slowly towards the door and if she makes a lunge for you....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:28 (twenty years ago) link

I'm sure she's very nice really though! < he said, hurriedly >

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago) link

Snarf.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:34 (twenty years ago) link

Why am I not surprised by the notion of Gary Numan marrying an obsessive fan?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:35 (twenty years ago) link

A few years ago I heard that the singer from Bush was a former Boy George conquest. True or false?

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Friday, 5 March 2004 19:29 (twenty years ago) link

1984, third grade: I remember hearing that Vince Neil killed his buddy from Hanoi Rocks not in a drunk driving accident, but by stabbing him! In the balls! While hopped up on drugs!!

Will (will), Friday, 5 March 2004 19:40 (twenty years ago) link

A few years ago I heard that the singer from Bush was a former Boy George conquest. True or false?

Not quite, but in his autobiography the Boy specifically named Rossdale as being the latest Sweet Young Thing of a friend of his, talked about meeting Rossdale for the first time etc. Rossdale has spent the rest of his time trying to pretend that didn't happen and getting an arranged marriage set up with a labelmate oh dear did I say that clearly that was my mistake I shouldn't spread such gossip around oh now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 March 2004 19:42 (twenty years ago) link

Prince was short for (excuse the pun) Prince of Darkness. Backing this up was the fact that 1999 filpped upside down was 666 1 as in "666 is #1!"

What about Rock Stars Who Aren't Realy Dead:
-Elvis
-2pac (2pac is always still alive, but Biggie remains dead, weird, that.)
-Jim Morrison

Randy Reiss (undeadsinatra), Friday, 5 March 2004 23:20 (twenty years ago) link

add another couple to the semen stomach-pump story, when i was in junior high it was all around that it was Jonathan and Jordan of the New Kids.

jonviachicago, Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:19 (twenty years ago) link

The version I heard was Rick Springfield. But I'm 32. I'm sure these things go in cycles.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 6 March 2004 02:20 (twenty years ago) link

I, too, heard the NKOTB version of the stomach-pump story in ninth grade in 1990. Another rumor that someone offered one morning in homeroom was that the two guys from Air Supply were getting married.

John Fredland (jfredland), Saturday, 6 March 2004 10:22 (twenty years ago) link

Blah blah blah, the stomach pump story for me was about Jon Bon Jovi, or maybe all the members of Bon Jovi, or the semen was in Jon's stomach but it was from all the other members of Bon Jovi, or something like that.

NA (Nick A.), Saturday, 6 March 2004 13:56 (twenty years ago) link

all the artists I've been told who have had ribs extracted so they can give themselves a blowjob

This actually was true of (early 20th c Ital poet) Gabriele d'Annunzio.

E. Pluribus Unum, Sunday, 7 March 2004 02:45 (twenty years ago) link

In grade 4, I had a hand-me-down David Bowie 1977 world tour T-Shirt that I wore to school. One day as we were going in from recess another kid says "David Bowie's bi!" I asked what that meant and he said that he had sex with Mick Jagger.

Also, I heard that prince had removed a rib so he could auto-fellate. I never heard no stomach pump stories though.

Elliot (Elliot), Sunday, 7 March 2004 03:18 (twenty years ago) link

E-40 is actually a white dude named Andy Partridge

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 7 March 2004 03:25 (twenty years ago) link

At our school it was Marc Almond and, always, HORSE-SEMEN. We also had Hendrix, but it was acid in the headband, natch. A little later, I believed Screech was Mike D's brother for a long time. Are we sure it's not true. They have such similar voices.

Jamie, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:34 (twenty years ago) link

i don't know what these boards or anything, i just did a google search for jewel. and getting her stomach pumped. my friends and i had an argument last night about it.

i remember, very clearly, sitting on my neighbors couch and MTV news came on. it was on mtv news, i assume they verify their sources? or maybe i assume wrongly. and even said, had her stomach pumped of whatever amount of semen. that's the only thing i don't remember.

sylvia, Friday, 19 March 2004 17:03 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe, on this occasion, it was 10ml.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 March 2004 17:06 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe it was 10CC?!?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 19 March 2004 17:13 (twenty years ago) link

Oh no! I'm now stuck with a mental image of Jewel laying on a bed and Lol Creme and Kevin Godley standing over her.... and that isn't a ball-point in his hand....
