Any mention of Pfork's bad writing has to mention the "watching a stillborn baby frolicking in the afterworld on an IMAX screen" comment from the Kid A review.

that's the problem with "song reviews"
― omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Monday, 30 November 2009 18:24 (fourteen years ago) link
anytime I've written for an outlet that does number or letter grades I get really tired of slapping Bs and Cs or 6s and 7s on stuff all the time but honestly that's just how it is
― it's a crazy college where you come from (some dude), Monday, 30 November 2009 19:04 (fourteen years ago) link
nah song reviews are awesome, and I'm not saying the score's what matters but seeing 7 7 6 6 6 6 7 8 7 7 6 6 6 5 6 7 7 7 doesn't make me want to click on them. Whiney's (and xp some dude) right though, which is why I wish they'd review actual singles a little more often
― brutt fartve (k3vin k.), Monday, 30 November 2009 19:05 (fourteen years ago) link
the thing about reducing everything to numbers is that it ultimately does feel pretty reductive

would be especially good for song reviews. worth your time, not worth your time, maybe if you've got a boner for this act
― da croupier, Monday, 30 November 2009 19:20 (fourteen years ago) link
The problem with PFM is that even when the blurbs say worth your time, the scores would say you've got a boner for this act.

i'm going to come up with a scoring system that tells you how to read my review through the prism of how big my boner is for the artist

from the 2009 readers' poll:
Trend You Wish Would Go Away:* Afropop indie (Dirty Projectors, Fool's Gold, Abe Vigoda)
* Afropop indie (Dirty Projectors, Fool's Gold, Abe Vigoda)
abe vigoda? i've only heard the new ep and seen them live but i really don't see the 'afropop' connection
also wikipedia says that they're a 'tropical punk' band.. am i missing something? are their earlier releases more world-music inspired?
― WILLIM GARLOS CILLIAMS (Future_Perfect), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 19:37 (fourteen years ago) link
that is what they referred to themselves as around the time of their first record iirc
― omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 19:39 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah they use to sound like 'tropical punk' and now they sound like 'shitty post-punk.' neither versions of the band are really any good tbh.

I haven't thought about my year-end favorite albums as a formal "list" yet, so completed the Pfork best albums section off the top of my head in about 3 minutes. Ended up going with The-Dream, Fever Ray, The Juan Maclean, Rihanna and Fuck Buttons -- in that order.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 20:34 (fourteen years ago) link
Was v. glad to see The-Dream under most underrated album category, btw!
i tried to fill out the readers' poll for the hell of it last year and the options were so limited that basically half the questions were impossible to answer unless Pitchfork is your only place to learn about music
― ess-tee-oh-pee (some dude), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 20:36 (fourteen years ago) link
I do like how they admit their own indie rock-centric bias in the poll, to the tune of --
Most Overrated Album: (insert a bunch of boring as fuck white bands with guitars)
Most Underrated Album: (insert a decent selection of comparatively diverse music)
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 20:38 (fourteen years ago) link
abe vigoda are awesome, also they're pretty influenced guitar-sound wise by king sunny ade, and they were al obsessed with the konono #1 album for a while.

i find it's a good name! although i am young and didn't know who abe vigoda was at the time i found out about the band. it sounds like a weird alien camel or something.

i'd probably like the band more if they made weird alien camel music tbh
