I bought my first Nick Drake album, after confusing him for Nick Cave. An enviable mistake.

doug watson (solid air), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:50 (twenty years ago) link

I Mother Earth/Our Lady Peace

Symmetrically similar names aside, both bands were (are?) also fairly boring '90s grunge-progsters, both were from around Toronto, and both made music that was largely forgettable (altho OLP's minor hit "Superman's Dead" was enjoyably annoying.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:21 (twenty years ago) link

I always think of someone else when I see David Sylvian's name, but I don't know who. (NOT Syl Sylvain, although that seems like it would be a reasonable slip.)

Actually, I do have trouble keeping apart some of the NY Dolls/Dead Boys guys, and remembering who was in which band... Arthur Kane vs. Cheetah Chrome, etc.

superpitcher and squarepusher

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago) link

There's some band called the Apex Theory whose name always makes me momentarily think that I'm reading about the Aphex Twin.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:58 (twenty years ago) link

Duster vs. Guster vs. Guther vs. Ganger vs. Guv'ner

I bet even the bands forgot which name they were.

Amon Tobin / Tobin Sprout
Imperial Teen / Imperial Drag. Both appeared then disappeared around the same time, both ex members or side projects of bigger bands, I still can't remember which was which.

Amon Duul/Amon Duul II

Leee O'Gaddy (Leee), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 21:29 (twenty years ago) link

The lesson of this thread: Obviously, the idea that each and every band should be allowed to choose a name to express their individuality MUST BE ABANDONED IMMEDIATELY in favor of mandatory seriial numbers.

"Mystic Chords of Memory, you say? Afraid not! You're Artist #24830329 now and forevermore."

Modest Mouse / Mouse On Mars

For a while I thought Jandek and Janeck Shaeffer were the same person, but I was disabused of that notion recently.

Also, I thought there was an unknown German kraut rock band called Noy for at least a year, until I put it together that they had been talking about Neu!.

And though I don't get them confused, I always have a moment of hesitation whenever I have to speak the name of a composer with a non-intuitively pronounced name: Penderecki, Gorecki, Reich, Boulez, Xenakis.

I confuse anyone named Peter with any other guy named Peter.

Department of Energy Department (u s steel), Saturday, 1 August 2009 02:43 (fifteen years ago) link

This year was really confusing until I realised that Florence and the Machine is not Flossie and the Unicorns.

I keep thinking that the Rentals are the Adverts, who in turn I apparently think are the Members.

EDB's post reminds me that I confuse Kid Creole and Kid Congo Powers, but not the other way round.

a passing spacecadet, Saturday, 1 August 2009 16:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I used to get the Adverts and ATV mixed up a bit.

Worst one for me is remembering which one of Swervedriver and Skrewdrive is the good shoegaze band and which is the presumably bad white supremacist band. Potential for awkward moments in that one now Swervedriver are gigging again!

eskimo kisses, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Ha, I've mixed those two up in conversation before.

"Modest Mouse / Mouse On Mars"
absolutely! which was the electronic and which the indie rock band again? i don't care for either of them.

i confused the replacements with another group but have forgotten which one. it wasn't the residents.
