I have heard of both, and really don't think that either are in the top 200 even of the 90s. Still, they're better than #9. I can't even remember how #10 goes, and I have that album somewhere. This is a funny old top 10 for me so far.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

this list is incredible.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Airbag is about a million times better a song than Paranoid Android.

danh (danh), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I gotta admit I couldn't tell you what "Regret" sounds like whereas "Regulate" is unavoidable for anyone of my generation.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Melissa, No wonder radiohead is your favorite band!

Oh please, Melissa is plenty well-informed about music. Hip-hop is just a piss in the ocean anyway, taken in the broader context of what's out there to be heard.

"Regret" got a lot of airplay in North American (for a New Order song). MuchMusic in Canada had the video on heavy rotation -- it was even number 1 for two weeks on their weekly countdown.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh! I voted for Regret. At #29, but I've got to cling to my victories.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

'Regulate' is better than 'Regret', because it has more letters.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I am worried that someone who doesn't know New Order is going to download 'Regret' and wonder what all the fuss is about.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry if I'm touching your wrist melissa, i'm just looking for a pulse from your sense of humor.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Both were on the radio all the time when they came out. I knew both as a kid. So shruggedyshrugshrugshrug.

I voted for "Regulate" but not "Regret." Alba's logic works for me.

*HEAD EXPLODES*

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

You can't spell "Regret" without "Regulate"-r.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I think we need a 'Regrulate' NO/Warren G mashup.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

You're pulling the sense of humor card? Please.

#5

GETO BOYS - "Mind Playing Tricks On Me" (710 points, 33 votes, 4 first place votes)

http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/dispatch/2002-11-08/music_string10-1.jpg

"I'm wondering why more ppl haven't ripped off/copied "Mind Playing Tricks", self-hatred, self-immolation, disgust, squalor, paranoia, brain damage, drugs drugs and more drugs, would've thought it an irresistable formula for an 'underground' of ANY description, and re 'Undergrounds' the first time I heard "MPTOM" it I thought 'great this'll be like VU where in 10/15 years there'll be 10,000 records that are like this one', so where are they?"

regulate is so goddamn smooth... (for a lazy literary reference) it's like that smoke in prufrock rubbing it's back on the window-panes.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

You're pulling the sense of humor card? Please.

Whether or not you think its funny, the point is I was joking.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"regrulate" :)

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

it's all about how he hits that line "...there's NOTHING I re-gret"

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like a place I could call my own...THE EASTSIIIIIIIDE MOTEEEELLLLL

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not going to turn this into a "B-but you must like x or you have no soul" fiasco, :|.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

6. NEW ORDER - "Regret" 647 points
5. GETO BOYS - "Mind Playing Tricks On Me" 710 points

Wow, that's a hell of a jump, we're really hitting the big time now.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the Geto Boys vote was a strategic alignment conspiracy by all the hhheads, right?!!!

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

(hence the big jump)

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

For some reason, I thought the Geto Boys were fat.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

the rhythm has no bass cuz the Hook plays trebllllle!

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

and for some reason i thought the Fat Boys were ghetto

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

and I always thought the Fat Boys were ghetto

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

HAW

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd forgot how absolutely propulsive Everlong is.

smirky, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

exciting!

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a shame we all knew what would win long ago. COME ON EUPHORIA (NINO'S DREAM)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe we'll be surprised?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

You know Soon is gonna be up there, just like Loveless is gonna be in the album chart

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

the Geto Boys vote was a strategic alignment conspiracy by all the hhheads, right?!!!

The only "conspiracy" was whatever we posted in the original thread about nominations.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It's gonna be really funny if Everlong gets THIS much praise and doesn't even make the top 100 (it dented my top 30 so I can make this joke).

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I like to think that there are still people eagerly awaiting the positiion of 'Lazarus' by the Boo Radleys.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

c'mon "rushed" by 69 - one last push : D

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I voted for "Mind's Playing Tricks on Me" because it's a damned good song, eff a conspiracy theory

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

We more or less knew what would win in the last poll too but it didn't make the rest of the countdown any less fun :)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

@djdee - that was a joke in ref to the whole converstaion that took place upthread/yesterday

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah begs2differ is OTM
rentboy sounds like he's setting up an affirmative action strawman to burn or something.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I like to think that there are still people eagerly awaiting the positiion of 'Lazarus' by the Boo Radleys.

(waves bashfully)

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I only have 'Desire' by 69. I like it very much. I will try to get this 'Rushed'.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I really shoulda voted for Everlong, I love that song but I think all the garbage Grohl's put out in the last few years kinda made me forget that.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ah sorry xxxpost i know i was just joking at the time.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

We more or less knew what would win in the last poll too but it didn't make the rest of the countdown any less fun
