zappi (joni), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

http://www.boardsofcanada.com/ people! Trippy, duuuude!

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 11 August 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait old stuff.

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 11 August 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

no problem spencer!

boc's official site hasn't been updated in three years. but man, how ridiculously talented is james tindall.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 11 August 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone know where to get that "Trails" track from the site?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 11 August 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm not so big on that leaked track. It seems to run out of ideas after the first two minutes and just plods along for the final three.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 11 August 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

i wouldnt be at all surprised if it turned out to be a Luke Vibert track

zappi (joni), Thursday, 11 August 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

yeah it sounds like him "remixing" BoC.
my tinny computer speakers are not good for assessing drum tracks.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 11 August 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Needs kerning.

Typographer Joe, Thursday, 11 August 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Nerds keening.

jerginsk (jergins), Thursday, 11 August 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

the yellow in the new one's cover art is fucking piss ugly and ruins an otherwise decent cover

BOC 'N' ROLL

amon (eman), Thursday, 11 August 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

I think the faded yellow is kind of fitting.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 11 August 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

they're "taking the piss" and putting it on their cover? you're right, it does fit.

amon (eman), Thursday, 11 August 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

ha ha!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 11 August 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

i went to a boards of canada listening party at a gay party with free vodka... weird mix of people, but i got too drunk to pay attention to the music, though it sounded a lot like boards of canada.....

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 11 August 2005 07:00 (twenty years ago)

YAY WE ALL GOT THE SAME EMAIL TODAY YAY I LOOVE MARKETING

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 11 August 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

this song serves notice on Caribou and Four Tet.

jerginsk (jergins), Thursday, 11 August 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

i don't think it does and i'm not a huge fan of either band.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 11 August 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

hstencil to be precise VIRAL MARKETING

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viral_marketing

[The timing just after 5pm UK time would have caught the UK finishing work slot, plus the US Eastern time zone would be midday - therefore the perfect timing to create maximum viral marketing.]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

on my screen it seems a lot more blue.

As we all know, there is absolutely no relationship between the colors blue and green.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

this is hardly viral marketing, martian. more like simple word of mouth.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

viral marketing = word of mouth

http://www.vbma.net/mission.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_of_mouth

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

Never bought a BOC record yet... and that cover/title is still a buzz-kill.

Jeez, self-parody ahoy!

The Strokes get dissed for this kind of thing but BOC are on Warp...

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

dude, an email announcement hardly constitutes viral marketing!!

xpost

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

it's only viral marketing if mark p is working for warp or its publicist (cuz he started the thread) or if he found out about the new album when a hot girl at a bar mentioned it!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

slocki i am sick of you and your mythical hot idm girls!

strng hlkngtn, Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

and viruses.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

hey, i'm EATIN here!

strng hlkngtn, Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

It's what people DO WITH the email that makes it Viral Marketing:

Viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that seek to exploit pre-existing social networks to produce exponential increases in brand awareness, through viral processes similar to the spread of an epidemic. It is word-of-mouth delivered and enhanced online; it harnesses the network effect of the Internet and can be very useful in reaching a large number of people rapidly.

Viral marketing is sometimes used to describe some sorts of Internet-based stealth marketing campaigns, including the use of web logs, seemingly amateur web sites, and other forms of astroturfing to create word of mouth for a new product or service.

Five years ago before blogs and ILM, Warp would have issued press releases that would have be picked up by convential media.

Warp decided to use the email network to break this news yesterday NOT press releases via a PR firm or a news story on their website, because they knew that Viral Marketing via an email message would create an internet BUZZ. i.e Connecting direct to the fans via email.

FACT: Blogs/ Rate Your Music/ ILM etc all responded FASTER than any conventional/ commercial media outlet on the web yesterday ! This was text book Viral Marketing in action ! RANT OVER

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

ok martian i guess i'll tell everyone in the advertising industry they're using the term wrong!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

fact!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

i imagined dj martian saying that as the "it's a fact!" girl from kids in the hall

strng hlkngtn, Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

(xpost) Make sure you include a seventeen page list that enumerates the reasons why they're wrong and sign it "Precious Hugs 4EVA, DJ Martian (XOXOXO)".

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 11 August 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

phil-two that is not viral marketing, that's being an ironic laggard in marketing adoption terms. Whose next for marketing theory & practice lessons ?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 11 August 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

holy crap you're being annoying.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 11 August 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

FACT!

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

why do people not like Geogaddi? I have that and Music has the Right...they both seem pretty good. I don't really *know* anything about electronica or IDM or whatever, so maybe I'm missing something.....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 11 August 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

That thing you're missing is called "snobbery".

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 August 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

I like Geogaddi more than MHTR. My only real problem with BoC in general is that their beats could use a bit more variety at times.
