Yeah i enjoy those b2b sessions. Bok Bok did a great show with Oneman last year too.

Big big fan of Ramadanman & Appleblim's "Justify". Reminds me of Hidden Agenda. So beautiful yet ominous.

Tim F, Monday, 16 November 2009 10:28 (sixteen years ago)

very real -- more reactions on the original wu tang meets indie culture thread

hoos-kingofthedrugs (deej), Monday, 16 November 2009 10:35 (sixteen years ago)

much as i like hatchas shows as of late isnt it a bit sad/depressing that he *Seems* to be playing so much old material? not too into djs mixing it up too much between past and present personally as it confuses my sense of time (and love of new shit) but im guessing he isnt too into the various strands of modern dubstep?

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 16:29 (sixteen years ago)

saying that though, just found the tracklisting for the oneman and hatcha set that im listening to and it seems back to back classics.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 16:30 (sixteen years ago)

I still like dubstep but only because I can shut everything out when I listen to it. I am tired of searching for all of this dubstep. It is for listening to in a dark room, and then you go and hunt down some new tracks and they have all this distracting crap on top of them. Like, it shouldn't sound weak and wishy-washy.

Oneman to mix Rinse 11! This can only be a good thing.

sam500, Thursday, 19 November 2009 01:07 (sixteen years ago)

I should listen to his Rinse show more but I can't get past the abominable sound quality of their podcasts.

sam500, Thursday, 19 November 2009 01:26 (sixteen years ago)

xxxp - I think a DJ like Oneman mixes up the old with the new very effectively. But it's not like he's exclusively playing dubstep. He comes into his own with his epic UK garage / dubstep blends. Haven't heard any Hatcha sets recently.

sam500, Thursday, 19 November 2009 01:51 (sixteen years ago)

onemans amazing. maybe the best dj on the roster, next to brackles. though its arguably easier when you have all diff eras and styles to mix from rather than just new stuff like marcus nasty or youngsta or whoever.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 19 November 2009 09:45 (sixteen years ago)

not sure about untold myself, even though i liked anaconda. heard some samples from his new doublepack and when it didnt just sound like older genres (house, eski), it just sounded a bit soft.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 19 November 2009 10:03 (sixteen years ago)

I guess I should go and see Brackles play tomorrow then?

19349 things paedophiles like to complain about (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 19 November 2009 10:06 (sixteen years ago)

YES you should

i like untold but not to the "ong genius" extent that i've seen elsewhere

lex pretend, Thursday, 19 November 2009 10:13 (sixteen years ago)

dont get the hype on these new softie-garage 'future garage' (ugh) guys

who needs to hear guys copy old grime beats, and not even that well?

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 19 November 2009 10:17 (sixteen years ago)

new dubstep allstars looks good btw, waiting for my copy to arrive, even though i read the effects on the 1st disc are a bit ropey.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 19 November 2009 10:21 (sixteen years ago)

Joker KILLED it last night in Athens

Malcolm Money, Thursday, 19 November 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

joker live set or dj set?

la monte jung (cutty), Thursday, 19 November 2009 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

DJ set.....does he do a live set?

Malcolm Money, Friday, 20 November 2009 00:51 (sixteen years ago)

that's what i was wondering

la monte jung (cutty), Friday, 20 November 2009 03:09 (sixteen years ago)

jokers playing in sf next friday night

expecting nothing short of greatness

The Macallan 18 Year, Friday, 20 November 2009 03:15 (sixteen years ago)

Woah he is? Where? How did I miss this?

We call them "meat hemorrhoids" (Alex in SF), Friday, 20 November 2009 03:43 (sixteen years ago)

new dubstep allstars cd is ok. i find ramadanmans cd really tepid and weak personally and half of it doesnt really have enough of a connection to dubstep for me to really think of it as much more than dubstep guys making techno. chefs cd is a bit more fun even if most of it isnt esp revelatory. think i will be ebaying my copy soon.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 23 November 2009 09:38 (sixteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

benga and caspas show from a month or two back on rinse is actually pretty fun, plus they play some great unexpectedly different stuff thats experimental but isnt lightweight/tepid like so much of dubsteps experimental side.

^^the a-side, "tenzado", is fucking great and everyone should get on it

lex pretend, Thursday, 17 December 2009 09:01 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno what half this stuff has to do with dubstep tbh. much more on the funky/techno side of things. not that its bad, this track in particular at least has a bit of balls, but a lot of the dubstep techno stuff doesnt seem to have much dubstep in it.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 17 December 2009 09:50 (sixteen years ago)

it's probably a good sign that i never actually know which threads to put these in

lex pretend, Thursday, 17 December 2009 10:01 (sixteen years ago)

we prob need a funkstep thread. id put that in funky myself.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 17 December 2009 11:07 (sixteen years ago)

I've only dipped my toes in the dubstep stream with criticaly vetted urban alienation things (Burial, Shackleton, Code 9), but fell in love with a track from this year that is a bit more on a Massive Attack/loved up vibe: Blue Daisy (featuring LaNote) - Space Ex. Who else should I be listening to on the hypnagogic lover's dub side?

Derelict, Thursday, 17 December 2009 14:17 (sixteen years ago)

i wish shackleton's three EP's was critically vetted

crazy shituations (cutty), Thursday, 17 December 2009 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

not much talk about shackleton's three EPs, i see

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:08 (sixteen years ago)

besides a few mentions here, not even a thread on ILX

crazy shituations (cutty), Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:09 (sixteen years ago)

bummer because i think it's really really good

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:12 (sixteen years ago)

I'm sure it got some love elsewhere (bobbins thread? in amongst the redshape talk iirc); yeah it's good

cozwn, Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:16 (sixteen years ago)

I'll add to the dogpile, I have been giving it pretty heavy headphone listening and can't wait to listen to it more at home

mh, Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

it's a huge massive slab of sound and intricate rhythms

love it

crazy shituations (cutty), Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:19 (sixteen years ago)

headphones really make it. "mountains of ashes" kills me when the bass come in.

crazy shituations (cutty), Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:19 (sixteen years ago)

"asha in the tabernacle" and "moon over joseph's burial" are incredible - great album

lex pretend, Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

dont really like shackleton too much personally, apart from a few tracks. always found his older tracks really 'small' sounding for dubstep. keep meaning to persevere but cant be bothered.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

"always found his older tracks really 'small' sounding for dubstep"

Don't understand this criticism at all. But his stuff only seems to have the barest connection w/ dubstep to me (and frankly he's outstripped those early Digital Mystikz tracks by a pretty large margin at this point.)

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 17 December 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

sacrilege. DMZ>>>shackleton all day. DMZ's range is much wider than anything i heard on that skull disco album. but then i dont really care much for his stuff as yeah it doesnt sound very dubsteppy at all, and well, hes even said hes not dubstep and doesnt care to be lumped in with it either from day one.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 17 December 2009 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

but the drums he uses/was using were really twee and thin and also quite 'kit' sounding which i wasnt too into.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 17 December 2009 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

Well the argument wasn't so much that Shackleton >>> DMZ as much as the Shackleton >>> the DMZ tracks like "Conference" or whatever. Range is overrated (also DMZ is three guys if you include Loefah so obv they are going to have more range. They've also released a lot of meh over the years.)

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 17 December 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

ha, i *really* like conference. remember hearing that on old youngsta sets without ever knowing what it was. but actually, that track, in so far as using similar sounds to shackleton, makes him sound lightweight and flimsy. mystikz is just two guys though, and im not sure how they divide production duties, whether its just coki doing it all one 1 track or mala or both together? not sure. i dunno what meh theyve made though, theyve actually released quite a small amount compared to guys like skream or benga.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 17 December 2009 18:45 (sixteen years ago)

is it just me or was martin clark kinda taking little shots at ramadanman and that whole style of dubstep-not-dubstep in the liners for dubstepallstars 7? dont blame him tbh, was pretty dull overall, but seemed a bit weird to include that on the cd its meant to be promoting!

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 17 December 2009 18:46 (sixteen years ago)

dunno if its seen as midrange noisy shit but i really like skreams 'fick'. more gabbastep plz.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 17 December 2009 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't listened to early DMZ in a while, but from memory I feel like Shackleton's upped the general dissonance level and claustrophobia over their stuff.

Meh stuff includes basically everything released under the Digital Mystikz name post-2006 w/ the stuff they've done for Soul Jazz being particularly unnoteworthy.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 17 December 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

fair enough, i didnt much like either box of dub compilation really.

what are the best shackleton tracks that youd recommend?
