Whiney sure knows how to enter a room!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 12 November 2009 17:55 (sixteen years ago)

to gbx

(kinda doubt it, but i can't lie, tupelo is still one of my most cherished bands ever)

I seem to remember certain people really enjoying Gillian Welch's Time (The Revelator)

That and Andonye are all that I make a habit of listening to from the genre.

Shh! It's NOT Me!, Thursday, 12 November 2009 17:56 (sixteen years ago)

fuck it, i kinda like that one golden smog record and the EP too

i like tupelo a lot

jazzgasms (Mr. Que), Thursday, 12 November 2009 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

down w/tupelo, also that jayhawks record with "blue" on it.

GO THICK AMOS! (jjjusten), Thursday, 12 November 2009 17:58 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I am an unabashed tupelo fan

high school!!!!

lots of jerks (gbx), Thursday, 12 November 2009 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, would say that Tupelo, 1st Son Volt, Time the Revelator, ummm maybe some other stuff is essential, even if it's "alt-country".

tylerw, Thursday, 12 November 2009 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

anyway, what's going on in this thread. holla bloggaz

tylerw, Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

why are you suggesting I'm an aspie?

― kshighway1, Thursday, November 12, 2009 11:07 AM (45 minutes ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

I'm not sure he is...? I think the conversation ran roughly like this:

1. You mention you're leaving.
2. Kate references the ancient ILX meme "when come back, bring pie."
3. Mr. Que notes that "pie" rhymes with "high" and posts "kspieway" as a play on your display name.
4. Dan notes that "kspie" looks like "aspie" (which, apart from being slang for the social disorder known as Asperger's Syndrome, is another ILX meme) and asks if "kspieway" is pronounced "kaspie-way."

That's pretty much it. It's just bored people making jokes. Given that ILXors have given you a hard time in the past, I can understand why you might be on guard more than usual when it comes to personal attacks, but this really isn't one.

Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:02 (sixteen years ago)

OMG yes, I love this record.

Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:03 (sixteen years ago)

Clarification: "When come back, bring pie" is a Rathergood/general Internet meme, not an ILX meme

a Barbie-like nub where he provates should be (HI DERE), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:04 (sixteen years ago)

maybe my fave 'local' record, if only because of when it first came out

lots of jerks (gbx), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:06 (sixteen years ago)

album title is "Tomorrow the Green Grass", just had to get that out of my head because it was bugging me. and it is awesome.

GO THICK AMOS! (jjjusten), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:06 (sixteen years ago)

ive used "Blue" over the years to make people grudgingly admit that alt-country can be good.

GO THICK AMOS! (jjjusten), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:07 (sixteen years ago)

I especially love "I'd Run Away" on the Jayhawks record. Can't believe I forgot to mention that one.

I went through a fairly messy week last year when I was listening to that record a lot while drinking copious amounts of bourbon on the rocks from a styrofoam cup. aah memories.

Shh! It's NOT Me!, Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:10 (sixteen years ago)

AYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO its that whine

Nanobots: HOOSTEEND (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:11 (sixteen years ago)

it is a drankin album, it's true

lots of jerks (gbx), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:14 (sixteen years ago)

ILM went through an alt-country "we all love Grandaddy" phase back in 2001, I think.

<3 this thread

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

lol, is Grandaddy considered alt-country?
also worth saving from the alt-country ghetto: Richard Buckner

tylerw, Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

IMO, Hollywood Town Hall and the earlier album Blue Earth by Jayhawks are as good if not better than Tomorrow the Green Grass.

they were a pretty awesome band

I actually have a CD-R of their original, vinyl small print debut album, it's pretty good, way more "country" than later stuff, but still awesome harmonies, etc...

I'll try to upload it for y'all.

On this date in 2008, Soulja Boy said something (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

grandaddy maybe went for a "sound of expansive western states" thing but they sound nothin like heehaw tupelo

xp

lots of jerks (gbx), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:18 (sixteen years ago)

would like to hear that jayhawks thing.
also, truth-bomb: No Depression was kind of a good mag when I read it.

xpost

I vaguely remember grandaddy being more tepid and california-inspired, even with some synthy flourishes?

Shh! It's NOT Me!, Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:19 (sixteen years ago)

hahaha "heehaw tupelo"

jazzgasms (Mr. Que), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:19 (sixteen years ago)

although, this may be a real life test to the question: how long do CD-Rs last?

i don't see grandaddy as alt country at all

truth attack: "faithless street" by whiskeytown is pretty good

On this date in 2008, Soulja Boy said something (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

the example band I used should probably be factored into the stance ILM had on alt-country at the time, guys

I mean, I'm just saying

a Barbie-like nub where he provates should be (HI DERE), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

maybe some britishers would be like "they are the true sound of americana" or what not. But you know how that is.

tylerw, Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:21 (sixteen years ago)

Tomorrow the Green Grass is pretty anomalous in my record collection, I'll admit. I bought it because Chicago radio station WXRT used to play "Blue" and "Real Light" a lot.

Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:21 (sixteen years ago)

Grandaddy dude used to get compared to Neil Young vocally, maybe that was it.

Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

I will rep for some whiskytown too, totally, but not without a little shame

but you know it sort of the same shame you feel for being maudlin, so it's cool

lots of jerks (gbx), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

xpost again

lol Dan

ie grandaddy did not work with Timbaland or release on Kompakt or sound too much like Television/Elastica/Nuggets so they are altcountry in 2001 ilm. just like puddle of mudd and nelly furtado.

Shh! It's NOT Me!, Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:24 (sixteen years ago)

imo farrar has had a moment or two since the first record. if you put all of them together you'd have a really, really good EP. like, I dunno, "barstow" and "strands" and "methamphetamine" and "circadian rhythm" and maybe one or two others. haven't listened to the new(er) one so maybe that's a dramatic return to form?

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, there are moments on the Farrar records of the past 10 years, though a lot of it is just dull. it took me a while to admit this. I haven't heard ... maybe the last two Son Volt records? Lost track.

tylerw, Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

he has a great voice though

bnw, Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

If you had told me "What will happen upon Whiney's return to this thread" that the answer would be "An endless discussion about Jay Farrar" then I would not have believed you.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

I'm telling Jeff Tweedy

jazzgasms (Mr. Que), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

it just feels right, you know?

tylerw, Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

i was expecting the thread to go back to either 1) bitching about nuidlator or 2) a link to #30

anyways i should drag out Wilco's AM and see if I can enjoy it after all that has happened subsequent...

Shh! It's NOT Me!, Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

"Box Full of Letters" -- which I heard on the same radio station around the same time (1995) -- is pretty good.

anyone have a cassette player I can borrow?

I remember liking that one a lot - sort of tupelor ish but cleaned up a bit

never saw it coming, what a surprise
it's been a wonder
